My bonnie Lass a song by English composerthomas Morley ( c. 1602). Much of the music from this time was sung or played on instruments and in this one you ll spot the same tune is played first on recorders the same notes are sung as a song. Track 4. Village band by Francis Silkstone and Nick Parker. Music for dance. Track 5. Maypole dance by Francis Silkstone and Nick Parker. Music for dance. Track 6. Greensleeves. A well-known Tudor tune now that was also popular in Tudor, here played on the guitar and pipe. Track 7. Pass time with good company - said to be written by Henry VIII. Music for the royal court. 2. One of the tunes from the Victorian era that is still popular today, played here on the oboe. Track 2. Sailor s hornpipe by Arthur Sullivan. English composer ( ). Track 3. We plough the fields and scatter, with music by J. Schultz. One of many Victorian hymns still sung today. Track 4. Hearts and flowers by Ronnie Prices. A typical silent movie tune from the very end of the Victorian era and the very dawn of the silver screen. Track 5. Boiled beef and carrots by Collins and Murray. A song from the old time musical hall. Track 6. Pit orchestra by R. Wade. The sound typical of the live music hall. Track 7. Waltz from the Vienna woods by Johann Strauss ( ). One of the best known tunes of the era. Track 2. Calling all workers by the English composer Eric Coates ( ). The signature tune to the war time radio programme Music while you work. Track 3. Newsreel special by Trevor Duncan. Music like this was played in the cinema before showing films about what was happening in the war. Track 4. Count the stars by Otto Sieben. Typical big band music from the 1940s. Track 5. Supper at the Savoy, played by a small string orchestra. Most musicians had gone to fight in the war so often live music was played by only a few instruments. 4. A Welsh folk song tune played on the Welsh harp. Track 4. Reeds on the Loch. A Scottish piece which also features the harp. Track 5. Amazing grace. Played here by a pipe band. Track 6. Scarborough fair. An English folk melody that dates back to medieval times. Track 7. At the village fair. An attractive English tune. 3

Crossing the Wujiang River. Another piece from the Tong Dynasty. Track 3. Dancing dragon. An energetic traditional Chinese dance with exciting Chinese percussion rhythms. Track 4. Faces of China. Played on a yang ch in which is a Chinese dulcimer. Track 5. Journey through China. Played on an erhu which is a bowed string instrument and a yang ch in, with just a little percussion. Track 6. Rice fields. Played by a Chinese orchestra. 8. Indonesia Audio on demand of programme 8 is available from the BBC iplayer from 05/03/2013. Track 1. Magic dance. From the island of Bali played on the giant metallophones with percussion Track 2. Monkey dance. A voice piece probably used to practise the rhythms for gamelan playing. Track 3. Shadow play. A gamelan piece used to accompany shadow puppet shows. Track 4. Jegog. The piece is played on giant instruments made from bamboo. Track 5. Lake Toba. The music is from the island of Sumatra. Track 6. Hearts and flowers. This piece is from the island of Java where the traditional gamelan is mixed with flue and zither. 5
