1 Early Music Vancouver

2 Notes from the Artistic Director As I contemplate the many things that we do at EMV, it strikes me that we are a difficult organization to put in a box. We have grown into a creative hybrid that resists definition we are in almost equal parts presenter, regional producer, collaborative nexus, and music educator. Charting the future for such a multi-faceted organization is both exhilarating and mystifying. With so many options, how do you make choices without feeling that you are somehow neglecting a vital part of who you are? The simple answer I have found is to follow my instinct. I am consistently drawn to artists, programmes and repertoire that inspire my passion and that build community. The Season is filled with music and artists that I hope will inspire you while also nurturing and providing a forum for gifted artists from all over our region and beyond. The cover of this year s calendar is a portrait by contemporary French artist Pierre-Yves Russo. It is a beguiling rendering of a woman playing the lute inspired by countless historical paintings on this same theme. Like EMV, it is at once connected with the past and unmistakeably modern. This gorgeous piece, along with the 15 Summer Festival, Music for Queens, informed the concept for this calendar historical images of women playing instruments balanced with contemporary portraits of prominent female musicians appearing on our series this year. Women have been woefully underrepresented in music history and this calendar is a very small gesture towards addressing this imbalance. I d like to thank José Verstappen and Christina Hutten for their help in sourcing these images. Warmest thanks to you, our audience and supporters, for building Early Music Vancouver into a unique, evolving and vital part of our region s performing arts scene. I look forward to seeing you at a concert soon. Matthew White, Artistic Director Calendar cover image: Pierre-Yves Russo: Young Woman with a Lute.
