2 dear friends What a great pleasure and privilege it has been to curate the festival and season outlined in this calendar! Early Music Vancouver plays a unique and increasingly large role in our region s cultural life and I am thrilled to be a part in defining its continued success and evolution. We remain committed to casting works from musical history into fresh light and creating unique moments in time. This calendar unveils a new logo and design for EMV one that carries forward the tradition of visual richness that our audiences have come to expect from our materials. Our new logo demonstrates an ongoing commitment to great music of the past while acknowledging that whatever we present must transcend time and touch people today. The partial representation of a circular canon from the 6th century evokes the idea of layered voices from our past still resonating in harmony today. Why flowers? Flowers, and roses in particular, are associated with passion, perfection, life, love, ephemera, fragility and the passage of time. A flower, like a live musical performance, exists most vividly for only a brief moment and then fades; its beauty is momentary yet eternal. We would like to thank Vancouver photographer Alex Waterhouse-Hayward, whose exquisite scans of roses from his garden inspired this calendar, and David Carlin for his invaluable help in choosing botanical images. Griffin Poetry Prize judges In 785 Josef Haydn wrote a chamber work based on the Biblical seven last words spoken by Christ on the cross. Traditionally, the words or phrases are spoken, followed by a meditation on those words, then by the music. EMV, in association with Green College at UBC, have invited renowned BC poets Robert Bringhurst and Jan Zwicky to prepare poetry for each of the seven movements that stimulates a dialogue based on the universal human qualities in the text and also in Haydn s deeply affecting music. Handel s Israel in Egypt Alexander Weimann s pacing of the action, choice of tempi and shaping of orchestral ritornellos are marvellous...one of the most consistently charming Handel opera recordings I ve reviewed in ages. Gramophone Magazine, review of Handel s Orlando Theodora is of one of Handel s largest-scale oratorios for soloists, choir and orchestra and was his personal favourite. Featuring some of the composer s most glorious music, this tragic work depicts the self-sacrificial love between a Christian virgin and a Roman imperial bodyguard. It serves as a timeless parable of spiritual resistance to tyranny and an indictment of persecution, topics that still resonate with audiences today. This production features 8 members of the Pacific Baroque Orchestra, 40 members of the Vancouver Cantata Singers and five international soloists, all under the direction of Alexander Weimann. Early Music America Charles Daniels a transcendent vocal virtuosity. The Guardian Charles Daniels is one of the most respected tenors of his generation. He has made over 00 recordings as a soloist including Handel s Messiah with the Gabrieli Consort for Deutsche Grammophon and more than twenty discs of Purcell s music, mostly with The King s Consort. Old-time songs are some of America s own early music. In the mid-tolate 800s, America witnessed a surge in publications of popular music: Civil War songs, slave songs, cowboy songs, minstrel plays and parlour songs, along with hymns and revival tunes. An American Tune spans this half-century, tracing particularly the path of old world British Isles folk music to the isolated rural areas of the United States. Catherine Webster (soprano) and Stephen Stubbs (lute, guitar and conductor) have spent careers based on the exploration of 7th and 8th century European music traditions and are now turning their interest to some of the first popular music of their own country. They ve come together now to create a gorgeous program of Foster songs, 9th-century hymns and reels, and exquisite arrangements of Appalachian early folk tunes and ballads.
