2 Notes from the Executive & Artistic Director Almost all music lovers can describe a Road to Damascus moment when a performance they heard irrevocably changed the way that they looked upon the world a sudden moment of conversion or transformation to a new way of thinking. In this 500th anniversary year of Luther s Protestant Reformation, it seems fitting to reflect upon the idea that more than cold reason, music has always been a powerful tool of persuasion. It provides us with an expressive outlet for processing how we feel about the world as well as Matthew White during a pre-concert talk with Stephen Stubbs (Jan Gates photo) the ability to influence others. Truly great music often appeals to our intellect and our emotion in equal measures and can both motivate and reflect change within us. I will never forget the first time I heard the first chorus of the St. John Passion its effect on me was beyond words and altered the course of my life. It was a moment of profound consolation that helped me understand that expressions of such complex beauty are, at the very least, evidence of our capacity to create incredible and noble things when we are so inclined. When we combine our capacity for reason with our great well of passion we can accomplish almost anything. In a political and cultural landscape that increasingly seems to sway people by appealing solely to pure emotions like fear, however, it seemed fitting to focus on the character of Orpheus for the calendar. Though this story is largely about the power of music to persuade and transform, it is also a tale of caution that warns us to keep our passion and reason in balance. Without this self-control and awareness of how easily our emotions can be swayed, we risk losing the things we value the most and often take for granted. If you are not yet a convert to the belief that well-constructed and inspired music can bring about positive change in many forms, then I invite you to explore EMV s 2017 Vancouver Bach Festival and Main Season. I promise there is music here that will appeal to both your hearts and your minds. 3 EMV, Green College at UBC, and the Early Modern Conversions Project present : a special series of free concerts, pre-concert talks, public lectures and podcasts TRANSFORMING SOUNDS / CONVERTED SELVES How Music Changes in Time, Changes Us, and Changes Our Worlds Free Events at Green College Thursday, September 28 at 5 pm Thomas Forrest Kelly Morton B. In recent decades, the early music movement has been at the center of a revolution in the practice of western classical music that values the rediscovery of little known repertoires as well as the exploration of period instruments and historical performance techniques. Artists and listeners alike have been forced to question deeply rooted assumptions about how music from the past was constructed and the types of interpretive choices that make music from any period speak most eloquently. Meanwhile, multidisciplinary work in cognitive studies has shown how human consciousness is routinely shaped and extended by external symbol-systems, media and instruments of all kinds, including those used in making music. This series of concerts, pre-concert talks, public lectures and podcasts will explore the modalities of such mind/body-converting and world-changing musical experience in the persons of players and listeners across time, and in the wider history of societies and cultures, using live performances of classical music from the Middle Ages, Renaissance / Reformation and Baroque periods as a laboratory. The project is a joint production of Early Music Vancouver, Green College at the University of British Columbia, and the Early Modern Conversions Project based at McGill University (and funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada).
