No less than thee complete ecodings of Tchaikovsky's ballet mastepiece The Nutcacke, with a common high level of pefomance and ecoding. The Rodzinski vesion is aleady wellknown to two -tack tape collectos, as it was eleased seveal yeas ago on two seven-inch eels, at a total cost of moe than $ The ochesta, consisting of playes fom England's best ochestas, is supeb, and Rodzinski's diection is immaculate. Westminste's epoduction is quite emakable, with scintillating highs, although it might have benefited fom moe hall sound. The Kapp vesion is quickly paced, and well -pefomed by an ochesta that must know this music backwads, they pefom it so fequently. Sound is not as clean as the Westminste, but vey good, with big, esonant acoustics which I find attactive. Ansemet is meticulous as he always is, but his ochesta has a lighte timbe than eithe of the othe two vesions, ecoded with London's typically fine quality. London has eleased steeophonic discs of all nine Beethoven symphonies with Ansemet and the Suisse Romande Ochesta, but these ae the fist two symphonies in this seies to be available on tape. This is a wise coupling, fo Ansemet is moe successful in the less heoic symphonies, which ae also bette suited to the sound of the Swiss ochesta. The Pastoale is as good as any on tape, leisuely, but with a tuly exciting stom. The Symphony No. 7 is given a vigoous teatment, Ansemet giving us seveal epeats not usually head. The sound is exemplay with the wide ange and fidelity chaacteistic of London. The Victo two -tack tape with Rubinstein and Reine, not yet available on fou -tack tape, still gets my vote fo the best pefomance and ecoding on tape, but this new Richmond elease, is almost as good in both espects, and at a pice of only $4.95, must be ecog- nized as the extaodinay bagain it is. that 81jCYW61 ---s. The heavily ochestated symphonies of Buckne, as well as those of Mahle, cy out fo steeophonic sound fo thei fullest sonic ealization, and SMS is to be commended fo eleasing two of the Buckne symphonies on tape. As was the case with thei ealie elease of the Symphony No. 7 conducted by Hans Rosbaud, thei vesion of the Symphony No. 4 is of extaodinay meit. This is pehaps Buckne's most easily undestood wok in this fom, with damatic suges of sound and an abundance of spectacula ochestal passages, paticulaly in the bass, which have an immediate appeal fo those uninitiated in the music of this compose. Heinich Holleise, whose fine ecoding of the Batok Conceto fo Ochesta (Vox XTC 704, 57.95) was favoably eceived some months ago, shows an equal affinity fo the music of Buckne, poviding a spacious, well -contolled eading, abetted by unifomly fine playing fom the Bambeg Symphony, although I would have pefeed a moe dynamic appoach in the Schezo. Repoduction is big and open, with athe vague diectionality, but plenty of concet hall pesence. Columbia has ecoded a pefomance of this music conducted by Buno Walte, but it is not known when it will be eleased, and if it will be available on tape. It is difficult to undestand why this music is not moe popula, fo it contains some of Tchaikovsky's finest music. The damatic than/ed theme of the fist movement, which ecus thoughout the wok, is one of the compose's most poweful themes, and as head in this new ecoding, stated by billiant bass, sonoous stings and shatteing cymbals, is exciting indeed. Thee ae seveal monophonic ecodings, notably Toscanini's with the NBC Symphony, but they all must bow to this splendid new ves'on. Goossens plays the scoe without cuts, and gives a dynamic, viile eading, with top quality playing fom the London Symphony. EVEREST has hee a sonic wonde, ecoded in deep, esonant steeo, despite somewhat stentoian highs. The conclusion of the fist movement, with its sustained tympani and bass dum olls, is one of the most spectacula hi-fi displays I've eve head. ñ COLUMBIA R-.,... {1, STEREO TAPE Music *** Pefomance **** Fidelity **** Steeo Effect **** GERSHWIN: An Ameican in Pais, Rhapsody in Blue Leonad Benstein as pianist and conducto of the New Yok Philhamonic and Columbia Symphony Ochestas COLUMBIA MQ 322 fou -tack, 71/2 ips $ min. Recommended unhesitatingly as the nea -definitive ecoding of these fine woks of Geshwin. Benstein is pefectly at home in this music, and stesses the jazz influences; it is difficult to imagine a moe idiomatic intepetation of the Rhapsody. Most othe fou -tack vesions of the Rhapsody couple it with An Ameican in Pais, but none of them is the equal of this in eithe pefomance o sound, the closest being the Victo with the Boston Pops conducted by Athu Fiedle, with Eal Wild as soloist in the Rhapsody. 10 ,, * CROSSTALK fom the Editos "THERE MUST BE SOMETHING WRONG with the pomotion of ecodeed tape." This emak was made by a man who is well acquainted with the vitues of tape and, in fact, has a adio show devoted to classical music. He continued with, "I know one stoe that has a vey adequate stock of tapes, yet they do not move the v.ay ecods do." WE REMINDED HIM THAT if moe musical pogams fom the adio stations wee played fom tape, this would be one thing that would help to spead the wod. We suggested that he switch to tapes on his own show. IT DEVELOPED that he was aleady using tape almost exclusively and when we bought up the point that he seldom, if eve, mentioned it on his show, he acknowledged that this was so.,. *, * *,,,, *,., * BEST OF ALL, he was going to take the matte up with the station management to see if tape might not be mentioned whee mention was due. What the outcome might be we do not know..,,,, *,, *,,, *,, THIS SAME SCENE pobably could be eenacted in many, many places, especially whee adio stations have steeo pogams. We think it only fai that when a tape is played it be identified as such, othewise the public will think they ae heaing a disc ecoding.,,,. *,,.,, * m * m IT SEEMS TO US that the MRIA should take steps to call this to the attention of the boadcastes. This would put an industy behind the move athe then one individual company. While they ae at it, the achaic "electical tansciption" bit might also go by the boads. This tem was a hangove fom the days when tape was but a gleam in the invento's eye. When a pogam is played fom tape, the adio station should so state. THIS WOULD NOT BE ASKING any favos of the boadcast industy. It would meely be setting the ecod staight. The benefit that would accue to tape would be a handsome one. Consideing the wide use that adio stations make of tapeand some stations can even be completely automatic unning entiely fom tape-if it wee but popely given cedit when due, ove the ai, the constant mention of tape would gadually sink into the public consciousness. When the public heas its music fom tape-and knows it-they will pobably figue that if the boadcast industy pefes tape, then it must be good., *, ANOTHER FACTOR is the cuent tend in almost all lines of poducts to give good guaantees on poducts. Automobiles ae now guaanteed fo a much longe peiod than fomely, and the same is tue of many othe poducts. THE WEARABILITY OF TAPE as contasted to the weaability of steeo ecods has neve been plugged as it should be. The ecoded tape slogan "Music Sounds Best on Tape" is 100% coect but maybe it should ead "Music Sounds Best on Tape-Foeve." THE STORY USED TO BE that if you made a bette mousetap the wold would beat a path to you doo. This old adage pobably now eads "If you build a bette mousetap the wold will beat a path to you doo-if you publicize it enough.", *,,. *, *,, THERE IS A LOT OF MENTION due tape. 14 FEEDBACK Excepts fom eades' lettes will he used in this column. Addess all coespondence to: The Edito: TAPE RECORDING, Sevena Pak, Mayland Mae Ceativity To the Edito: As a means of inceasing the effectiveness of Tape Recoding, I should like to popose an issue devoted to micophones. Included would be an up-to-date listing of specialized equipment (con-act and miniatue mikes, paabolic eflectos, electonic mixes, filtes, etc.) along with the* scoop on those often pictued but seldom descibed micophones such as Telefunken, Stevens and RCA. This diectoy bolsteed by suppoting aticles that delve moe deeply into micophone usage and the somewhat baffling aspects of intepeting micophone specifications would be a welcome addition to the tape enthusiast's liteatue file. In a moe ecent issue of Tape Recoding, editoial and "Feedback" comments have implied that the time is ipe fo tape ecoding to emege as a seious hobby. I quite agee. Howeve, fo a hobby to be emoved fom the novelty class, it must not only impat pesonal satisfaction, it should be intellectually challenging and highly ceative as well. Tape ecoding has immense potential in all thee of these aeas but the potential has to be developed. To the oss ne and modeate use of a tape ecode, you magazine is ideal. To the established hobbyist with a consideable investment, it leaves something to be desied. 1 will concede that the latte individual does not compise a majoity of the eades of this magazine. In fact, this pecentage may be athe small. But it is upon this vanguad of expeienced hobbiests that the futue of tape ecoding as a ceative and ichly satisfying avocation depends. If you fail to challenge this goup, they will become stagnant and eventually dift into moe pomising fields. I feel that the needs of the advanced hobbiest could best be met by the addition of eniched aticles and the establishmet of an outlet fo ceativity. The suggestion made by a eade fo a national tape ecoding contest may well be the answe to the poblem of stimulating ceative tapes. This contest could be set up in such a way that it would tax the talent and equipment of all the contestants. Stimulated and challenged, I believe that this minoity goup would make a majo contibution towad the expansion and development of this fascinating hobby.- Philip C. Rush, Bistol, Pa. Thank you fo you comments. We will see what can be done towad something moe concete and detailed on micophones. Ou "Sound Stoies" offe an outlet fo some ceative wok with the ecode and we will be glad to conside such sound stoies at any time fom ou eades. The witten stoy should give the details on how the tape was made and the tape should be appoximately 8 minutes in length so that it can he placed on a 3 inch eel, dual tack. Flats To the Edito: A month o two ago, you magazine pinted an aticle descibing a method of emote contol ecoding using a moto cut-off switch. This aticle has been bought to my attention by tape coesponding fiends and I feel it my duty to expound upon the danges involved in this type of emote contol. In the vast majoity of home -type ecodes thee is no povision fo disengaging the idle mechanism of the machine when the moto cuent is disconnected. Because of this the entie mechanical coupling of the moto to the tape suffes fom the stalling of the moto duing ecoding. Rubbe wheels ae left engaged in compessed positions, belts unbalanced in fowad stetch and the tape is left squeezed between the pessue olle and the capstan. To leave a machine in this condition cetainly contibutes to inceased wea and loss of opeational life. Let the use of the machine with factoy installed emote contols know they do not opeate in this slipshod manne. Pope emote contol should consist in complete disengagement of the mechanism when tape stoppage is desied. I am confident that uses of pofessional equipment would not subject same to the punishment you so confidently descibe to you eadeship. In hopes this lette saves one tape machine fom wows, Muttes and distotions esulting fom stalled opeation, I am-michael Rice, Kustom Recods, Ann Abo, /Mich. In the aticle mentioned, the autho specifically advises against leaving the ecode in play o ecod stalled position fo any length of time which would tend to cause flats on capstan and dive olles as mentioned in you lette. Of couse, the ideal way to have emote contol is by means of solenoids which will engage o disengage the mechanism by emote contol. Some ecodes stat and stop the tape simply by pulling back pessue olle fom the capstan which continues to otate, the moto not being stopped. Skips To the Edito: In you Madi 1960 issue one of you eades asked about the cause of "ecoding skip." You answe was most infomative and seemed at the time to be complete, as you answes usually ae. Because I had had no touble along this line, I simply filed the matte at the back of the "old subconscious." Recently, howeve, the thing copped up at a gatheing of ecode fiends and hee, fo what it is woth, ae ou conclusions. In playback o ecoding the tape is being wound unde a slight but definite tension and the winding is smooth, even and compact. In fast fowad o ewind, the tape may still wind smooth and even but it will no longe be so compact and when stopped suddenly thee is a slight shifting along the tape causing a small aea of vey loose o tight (elatively speaking) tape, a sot of pocket. When ecoding this pocket slips past the head so fast it does not egiste and sounds, on playback, exactly like a loose connection. The time element is so shot thee is no wow appaent to the ea. It might show up on a flutte mete. It seems to happen to those ss ho made shot and fequent ewinds fo easing and the tape on thei eels was wound vey ough and iegula. 1 do not do much easing o ewinding and fast fowad so pehaps fo this eason I have not had this touble-yet.-g. F. Hollington, Beckville, Ont. Reel Idea To the Edito: Hee ae a few things which might be of inteest to othe ecodists. I find that when using the 3" eels (fo tapespondence) that when one comes towads the end of the ecoding o playback and thee is vey little tape left on the supply eel thee is a tendency fo the ecode to slow up and cause a wow. This seems to be caused by the small size hub on such eels and the esulting incease in tension on the tape. This can be ovecome by placing an empty 7" eel on top of the 3" supp y eel, letting it evolve at will. Ty it. had a habit of leaving my Wollensak I TI500 tuned on, especially in daylight as it is difficult to note the illuminated dials at any distance. To ovecome this I installed a small pilot light jewel diectly in font of the pilot light in the instument. It is vey easily done and gives an immediate waning that the ecode is tuned on. The Wollensak fim has done this on the T1600 seies. I also find that if the moto is kept vey clean the ecodes both un exceedingly cool. To clean the moto I use a ubbe spay nozzle of a bath spay with a metal piece emoved and placed on the end of my vacuum cleane hose. One moe-i puchased fou ubbe tips that ae made to put on the end of cutches, etc., and placed them ove the ubbe feet of my ecodes so that it inceased the height of the instument fom the table and find that this also helps geatly in keeping the ecodes unning cool. The most inteesting and widely applicable questions will be used in this depatment. I have encounteed a poblem conga cening magnetic ecoding fo which I am unable to find a solution. I have a couple of eels of acetate tape that have been in use fo a yea o so. The fist hunded feet, moe o less, of each of these eels has been ecoded and eased at least 60 o 70 times as I used the fist pat of these eels fo ecoding pactice. This section of tape now will play back only vey distoted ecodings. In the middle of the eels the ecoded playbacks ae as good as eve. I am quite confused by this situation as I have ead seveal times in eliable publications, such as you magazine, that magnetic ecoding tape can suvive thousands of such ecodings and playbacks. I cetainly would appeciate any helpful infomation you might send me. F. W., Povidence, Rhode Island. -As we have mentioned befoe, tape A may be used fo thousands of playings fo thee is no physical change in its makeup and the wea facto is negligible. The difficulty you ae having stems fom incomplete easue. As the tape is ecoded, eased and ecoded again and again, if the ease cuent is not sufficient to ease the peaks, whee the magnetism on the tape is vey heavy. then this esidual magnetism will gadually build up and the tape becomes noisy and because of the magnetism pesent, will not be able to accept new ecodings. The answe, of couse, is to apply a heavy enough easing field to ovecome the esidual magnetism now pesent on the tape. This may be done by means of a bulk easue, that cleans a whole eel at a time. You might also have you machine checked to see that the pope amount of cuent is going into you ease head. If this is weak, then the complete easue of the tape befoe ecoding will be impossible. Q1 have a poblem which may be of inteest to othes leaning a language. I have a V -M 714 and the diections state that the stop button must always be pessed down when not in use in ode to potect the idle mechanism. I use eaphones and listen to the tape while in bed. When the tape comes to the end the machine stops but I have to get out of bed to push the stop button. I don't know what an idle is but is thee some way I can potect the idle without getting out of bed to push the stop button?-c. C., Los Angeles, Cal. idle is a ubbe immed wheel A -The in the ecode and if the pessue is left on it in one spot it will develop a "flat" and make the ecodings vay in speed poducing a wow. The only thing we can suggest is that you move the ecode close to the bed fo we know of no pactical way to modify the ecode to accomplish the elease of the pessue on the idle. I am inteested in secuing tapes by the Lenny Heman Ochesta. Could you tell me who he ecods fo on tape and whee I can secue these tapes. I have stacked them in boxes along the walls on shelves but when they ae stacked so high thee is always the poblem of weight and the stacks leaning in some diection. Taking the waps out of disc ecods is easy. Please tell me of some method fo tape eels that have waped that is simple fo a waped eel is useless eithe fo playback o ecoding. My ecods ae stacked flat and level with a 12 x 12 boad between each 15 to 20 ecods but I do not know how to stack tape without the eels waping. I have too many eels to buy to suggest buying new eels.-r A. H., Spingfield, Ill. -Reels should not be stacked one A atop the othe as you have done with the ecods. The weight imposed on the bottom eels will tend to bend them out of line. Tape eels should always be kept on edge. Anothe facto in waping eels is a ecode which winds the tape on them too tight. If the intenal 'pessue against the hub is moe than about 10 ounces, it will defom the hub and the eel flanges will get out of line. Tape fo stoage should be wound athe loosely so that changes in humidity, which cause acetate tape to swell o shink, will not impose stain on the hub. As to how to staighten you old eels. thee is only one way to ty, and it woks most of the time. Make up a U shaped metal piece.310 (about 5/16") inches in width and foce this unde the low spots in the eel. Then immese the eel in hot wate fo about 30 minutes. 17 E7. TAPE IN EDUCATION THIS column is the fist in a seies on teach - ing machines and the newly -developed techniques of pogammed leaning which make them possible. Howeve, befoe we can discuss the machines and techniques, we should undestand something about the equiements fo them, what they can do, and what makes them of temendous potential value to a dynamic system of education in a democatic county. Today, eveyone ecognizes that thee is a geat shotage of qualified teaches. Almost evey school distict has difficulties each yea tying to ecuit an adequate teaching staff. Thee simply ae not enough tained competent teaches available fo the numbe of students in schools. Many suggestions ae made to solve this poblem. Often it is suggested that highe salaies fo teaches would solve the poblem. Obviously this is not so, upon caeful examination, simply because thee just ae not enough qualified teaches in existence to fill all the classooms egadless of how much you pay them. Then comes the eply, "Yes, but, if you pay highe salaies competent people will be dawn to teaching in lage numbes and will emain in the field, so you will have enough teaches in time if you only aise salaies high enough." Unfotunately, this eply ovelooks the lage numbe of othe factos which cause pofessionally qualified pesons to leave teaching o even to efain fom consideing it as a possible caee. A couple of yeas ago I head a supeintendent of schools delive a talk to a civic goup. It happened to be a yea in which teache oganizations had mounted a temendous dive fo shaply inceased salaies. At the end of his talk, the supeintendent got in a plug fo the cause by saying, "... And, we cetainly should incease salaies fo cu teaches, because if salaies ween't too low, moe of you would be encouaging you childen to go into teaching as a caee." At fist this may sound logical, but is it? What is the eal eason why most of us would not ecommend to ou childen that they go into teaching as a life wok? Isn't it because in most states they would almost have to go to teaches college in ode to be cetified? And, aen't we geneally inclined to acknowledge that most teaches colleges ae second ate schools with lowe entance equiements and lowe academic standads than fist class libeal ats colleges? Don't most of us conside that the intoduction of lage amounts of equied methods couses in the undegaduate pogam pevents the teaches college student fom eceiving sufficient subject matte instuction so that he can be said to have an adequate college education when he gaduates? And, don't people dop out of teaching not only because of low salaies, but because of the endless impossibility of doing a tuly pofessionally competent job of teaching a classoom full of students when the teache must spend hous each day on cleical o Robet C. Snyde othe non-pofessional wotk? Recent studies have estimated that appoximately 26% of a teache's time at school (o about 40% of the teache's total woking time if ovetime wok afte hous outside school is counted) is spent on non -teaching choes. The teache who is expected to be not only pofessionally competent but also a paagon of vitue in the community must also spend a temendous amount of time.. wateing plants, cleaning blackboads, monitoing lunchooms, policing playgounds, putting on childen's leggings, filling out elaboate attendance sheets, collecting class funds...", and so on. If we wee to aise teaches' salaies until we pay as much fo teaching as the job should be woth, wouldn't pofessionally competent people still leave the field and go to othe wok that offeed moe dignity and satisfaction, a geate hope of pofessional pomotion, and fewe aggavations? X,} AZ Moeove, so long as teaching jobs involve so many non-pofessional hous, how can the teache eve be paid the kind of salay which would be appopiate if the teache's full time wee utilized pofessionally in stictly teaching activities? A good many books ae now being published which make this vey point. Teaches can not easonably be expected to establish and maintain the desied standads of knowledge and pofessional competence unless and until they ae able to wok unde pofessional conditions that ae equal in pesonal dignity, satisfaction, and tangible ewads to those they find in fields such as govenment, eseach, industial management, and so on. But, how can teaching conditions be changed to povide the "pestige, fulfillment, advancement and ecognition in the pofession" equied to bing qualified pesons into the teaching field and keep them thee? In next month's column we will summaise fo you some of the ideas pesented in the newe books and show how these elate to the emegence of teaching machines and pogammed leaning pinciples. 18 ' THE SOUND BIRTH PLACE OF LIBERTY o I.. IS BOSTON by Sidney A. Dimond, Pesident, Ceatie Associates, Inc.... valuable lessons on the ceative use of the tape ecode ae in this inteesting aticle on the ceation of a documentay tape. THE poject appeaed simple enough in outline; was complicated and time-consuming tanslating into actuality. With an inceasing inteest and awaeness in ou fee entepise.system and heitage-and a apidly developing maket fo educational tapes in schools and homes-we wanted to take advantage of ou location in Boston. Boston people and places, afte all, have been the aw mateials of histoy and libety since the city's founding in Ou thought: to place on tape a one hou documentay tou of Boston's histoic shines. Any ceative poject of this magnitude and scope inevitably involves a numbe of athe difficult steps: 1. The booding about the concept. 2. Outlining of possible content. 3. Dy un field tips, including making of contacts. 4. Development of budget and timetable. 5. Field ecoding. 6. Developing and editing of basic mateial. 7. Witing of the scipt. 8. Studio poduction and integation. 9. Final editing. 10. Duplication, distibution, and pomotion. Let's discuss each of these steps in bief detail. BROODING ABOUT CONCEPT """, W... "' ^«. 4 I ;, - -- _ + e t3:s, ',. Afte eleven yeas of active poduction in tape documentaies we have finally aived at what we conside an abiding tuth. If fist things ae to come fist, and if pogess is to be made athe than imagined, the concept of a poject must be the stating point. Fom concept comes the oveview of objectives; detemination of content and intended audience. Only afte this wok is done ae we in a position to think seiously about technique and damatic devices. And of all the tasks and headaches involved, the easiest, pehaps, is the concept. Fo concept booding involves mostly deams and little investment of money and time. Ou basic theoy, and it's pat of the concept, is that the magnetic tape ecode is shee magic. Imaginatively used, its implications fo sevice ae unending and emakable. So ou concept finds vigo in the fact that the tape ecode can and should be used fo new and diffeent ceative adventues. The mee knowledge that something has neve been done befoe isn't a deteent to us; it is, athe, pat of the cham and the challenge. Top o4 page: the finished tape eady fo sale, the esult of hundeds of man-hous of ecoding and caeful editing. Left: a familia sound to Bostonians, coins being fed into a subway tunstile is ecoded by Dennis Oppenheim, poduction coodinato of Ceative Associates.

19 _ tl Thee's moe to this point of view. We believe that too many pomising ideas ae assassinated blindly in the conception peiod by too much caution and an oveabundance of "e -thinking." We'e inteested in why we can do things athe than why we can't. We'd athe take advantage of evey physical and mental esouce to make ou mistakes in movement, athe than stagnate. Boldness-but not foolishness-is the lot of the pionee. We believe those men who pioneeed in the isolation of the factos of feedom, people like Paul Revee, the Adams family, John Hancock, Robet Teat Paine, Wendell Phillips, Edwad Eveett, and all the othes, wee fist and foemost human beings. Human beings with ideas and thoughts of impeative impotance to us in the cisis which is today. And in any histoy -type poject we'e inteested in potaying these patiots fom the point of view that histoy is people; that histoy is now as well as then, and that histoy is us, as well as they. "Thee ae deames who deam deams," the man said, "and thee ae deames who deam pactical." These men deamed pactical, and so, in a late day, must we. This, then, is pat of the message to be conveyed by the final tape poduction. They had values many yeas ago which can give us kinship and couage. THE AUDIENCE All of this, howeve, means little if thee is an absence of multitudes who can and will listen to the tapes. Of necessity, then, pat of the concept must be who's going to listen. O even why should they listen? O, moe impotant fom an economics point of view, who's going to want to listen enough to plunk down had cash fo the finished poduct? Afte all, this is a competitive society and thee ae many pleas to the eas and pocketbooks of all of us. The answe to this poblem? Povide a poduct with a wothwhile pupose. A poduct which takes full advantage of one of the geat vitues of tape: the ability to stimulate the imagination appetite. Take advantage of the oppotunity fo the listene mentally to build his own images and desciptions. Build into the scipt stuctue the thee "C's" of successful damatugy: chaacte, contast, and conflict. Bood enough about these things, you mind momentaily unclutteed by specific details, and you have the foundation on which to build a successful sevice to the listene. A sevice which he can appeciate and will buy. Whethe he's a teache looking fo classoom aids, a touist passing though town, o just an odinay guy looking fo additional infomation on his native backgound. OUTLINING CONTENT Ou tape on histoical Boston began to take tangible shape. We had in hand a ough outline of content. Thee is, in Boston, an established "Feedom Tail," well maked by signs and diections. You can tave the tail by bus o by foot. On the "Feedom Tail" thee ae fifteen histoical sites. Thee ae optional side tips to such famous spots as Bunke Hill Monument and Boston Common. Stick to the basic tail itself and you'll visit the Pak Steet Chuch, Old Ganay Buying Gound, King's Chapel, the site of the fist public school, the statue of Benjamin Fanklin, the Old Old Noth Chuch, fom which Paul Revee waned the county of the appoach of the Bitish by signal lantens. The steeple has been estoed afte the oiginal was felled by huicane Caol in it is along the Feedom Tail coveed in the tape. Cone Bookstoe, the Old South Meeting House, the Old State House, the Boston Massace sie, Faneuil Hall, Paul Revee's House, the Old Noth Chuch, Copp's Hill Buying Gound, Boston Stone, and Povince Steps. Popely done, with time to invest and investigate, this tou alone would take seveal days. Many touists do it in half a day. You task on tape: to cowd into a bief fifty-seven o eight minutes the "alive" high spots of such a tou, in sound and naative. The stating step? The stating step, of couse. You walk, in detail, the entie oute. Thee of us did this. Meeting guides, asking questions, secuing all available liteatue, making voluminous notes on inteesting sounds and available, coopeative pesonalities. Back in the office, feet blisteed but minds agile, we made ou outline moe specific. Whom had we "found?" Well, we had discoveed young J. Muay Mashall, assistant ministe of the Pak Steet Chuch, who was willing to tape an ad-lib inteview. Pixie - like Haold J. Haynes, vege of Kings Chapel, was also available, as was Chales Loing, consulting achitect fo the Old South Meeting House, an eldely gentleman with a mammoth sense of humo. Hecto Campbell, supeintendent of Faneuil Hall, was inteested. Gane Coson, fo a quate of a centuy the custodian of the Paul Revee House, would go along. And the Reveend Howad P. Kellett, Vica of Old Noth Chuch of Paul Revee fame, was most enthusiastic. We wee well on ou way to contast. Each of these men had a distinctive voice and manne of speaking. Each was authentic. Each would lend chaacte and chaacteization. Each could secue fo us, fom the appopiate authoities, pemission to ecod not only thei wods, but the moe inteesting available sounds. And each? We put togethe a tentative budget and poduction timetable. Stated making aangements fo ou field ecodings. FIELD RECORDING Field ecodings wee made, obviously, at the convenience of ou subjects, and not in the ode in which they would appea in the final show. We taped fist a long inteview with M. Mashall at the Pak Steet Chuch. He descibed the oigin of the song "Ameica," fist sung in the Chuch; William Lloyd Gaison's fist anti -slavey addess, and told us why the spot has long been known as "Bimstone Cone." (Bimstone fo gunpowde was stoed in the cella duing the Wa of 1812.) Late we tudged up a cude cicula staiway into the heat of the steeple to ecod at close ange the ticking of the towe clock and the tolling of the chuch bell. We used an Ampex 601 and a Tune Dynamic 57D pencil mike with excellent esults. We took seveal cuts in vaying pespectives, and pobably confused the pedestians on Boston Common since the bell was ung fo us seveal times on cue, and off its egula schedule. Fotunately, thee was an available AC powe supply plug high in the steeple. We also took numeous cuts of Boston taffic fom vaious windows in the chuch and paish house, ecoded the cooing of p'geons on Boston Common, and subway cas aiving and leaving at the Pak Steet station neaby. In the weeks which followed we taped inteviews with the othe gentlemen noted above, and a wide vaiety of sounds (some of which we late e-ecoded to gain additional pesence) including the Kings Chapel bell, labeled by its make, Paul Revee, as his "sweetest," a complete Sunday sevice at the Old Noth Chuch, fo which we used two Ampex machines, a 600 and a 601, and RCA 77 mikes. We made one cut fom the pespective of the balcony, nea the choi, and the othe fom the vicinity of the pulpit. In total we built an inventoy of pehaps two dozen sepaate sounds, histoical and contempoay. We ang smatly the ship's bell on the U. S. Figate Constitution, "Old Ionsides." With ou Tapak Newscaste we toued Boston's maket distict to tap the vebalizations of its peddles. We ecoded, in complete detail, the anthological patte of a pofessional bus tou dive. On this we cheated just a bit. Duing the entie execise the bus, the dive, and taping cew wee paked comfotably in a convenient spot. Just outside the bus gaage. Recoded duing test uns of the H -I at Rocketdyné s neaby Populsion Field Laboatoy, the apes ae played back to engine components mounted on an extemely sensitive "shake table." "As fa as we know this is a fist in the business," says Feentz, a membe of Rocketdynés Engineeing Development laboaoy, who conceived the idea. "We ae able, fo the fist time, to duplicate the exact vibations that components undego evey time they come to life in a ocket engine. Undestanding the temendous stesses geneated within ou big ocky engines is a key o making them ef iable." The technique has anothe advantage in addition to sonic ealism: using the magnetic tapes, engine "stats" can be simulated time afte time on a closed loop, thus exposing the ocket engine components to the stess of epeated engine opeations. Such stess had neve befoe been accuately measued; it was always a matte of slide ule guess wok. "One of the engine components we used had 11 actual "stats" mounted in a ocket engine at the Field Laboatoy. Using ou tape, we took the component out of the engine, mounted it on ou shake table and simulated anothe 75 stats. This is fa moe than any Rocketdyne engine would eve have to make in the field. 'By inceasing the vibation levels we ae also able to simulate actual missile 'lift-off' conditions,' Feentz added. "We can thus pinpoint possible weak aeas in ou engine hadwae duing ealy stages of development, saving thousands of dollas by peventing missile failues late in the game. We expect this pogam to have an impotant effect on the nation's ocket engine e iability pogam." The Rocketdyne test goup uses a standad Ampex magnetic tape ecode in the pogam. 24 1... THE STORY OF TAPE Pat II Bases, Oxides and Bindes. a tape can be no bette than by Mak Mooney, J. the mateials fom which it is made POPULAR wites on the subject of tape ecoding have been in the habit of calling tape "a ibbon of plastic coated with ion ust." While the desciption is tue, it might be temed the undestatement of the yea fo thee is quite a bit moe to it than that. The toleances allowed, not only in the thickness of the base mateial, but in the size of the "ion ust" patides and thei composition, bode on the fantastic. Even the thickness of a human hai is a goss standad of compaison fo toleances on the ode of one one hundedth as thick ae not uncommon. All tape, fom the familia audio tape which is used on tape ecodes in the standad 1/4 inch width to the wide video and instumentation tapes ae composed of thee pincipal pats: 1-the base, o suppot upon which the ion oxide is coated, 2-the ion oxide paticles which hold the magnetic ecodings and 3-the binde which holds the ion oxide to the base. The only exception to this is the homogeneous type of tape wheein the oxide is mixed in with the base but this method of manufactue is not used in this county. BASE MATERIALS The ealiest commecially available tapes made wee on a base of kaft pape (the familia bown wapping pape) which had been supe-calendaed to give it an I e, O o ft`.41.0!'d I : ffl..... f d. - Samples of acetate film manufactued by Celanese Plastic! Company at Newak New Jesey, ae constantly tested on this automatic gauge ecode. The Celanese manufactuing pocess povides a film of exceptionally unifom gauge, with a toleance of of an inch, being maintained. Any vaiation in the thickness of the film has an effect on the final oxide coating. The toleance is only one hundedth the thickness of a human hai. 24

25 exceptionally smooth finish. The poduction of pape tape was discontinued some yeas ago but pape did have a few advantages in that it was easy to mak, it did not stetch and did not become bittle vey eadily. It did have some seious dawbacks, howeve, in that it toe easily when nicked and also was noisy, because of suface unevenness. Since many of the qualities of the finished tape ae dependent upon the base mateials, the chaacteistics ae vey impotant. Among the facots detemining the quality of a base mateial ae these: it should be inexpensive, should not suppot fungus gowth, should be non -inflammable, should be capable of manufactue to vey close toleances, must be flexible to the point of limpness both befoe and afte coating, the suface should be pefectly plain and fee fom impefections, and should be of a higl- gloss, it should be able to be made in thicknesses fom % mil up, it should not etain stong electostatic chages, it should not swell o contact with changes in humidity and should keep in stoage. It should be capable of withstanding moe stess than the stesses imposed by tape ecodes, and should be of such natue that the oxide coating can be keyed into the base and not flake off. It should not eadily tea, no should it elongate and emain stetched unde nomal stesses. These ae the ideal specifications and no one film known today can meet them all completely. ACETATE BASE Cellulose acetate is the most widely used base mateial. This is made by eacting highly puified cellulose with acetic acid to join acetyl goups along the cellulose polyme chain in exact pecentages. Afte being compounded with stabilizes and plasticizes, and dissolved in solvent, the acetate is fed onto lage highly polished evolving wheels. When sufficient solvent evapoation has occued, the film is emoved fom the wheels and fed -ni ".."9"7 ikvodpa, though dying ovens to complete the pocess. The olls of fun ae made to the equied thickness on the machines. Standad thicknesses fo tape use ae: 1 mil (1 mil equals 1/000 of an inch) and 11/2 mils. Othe thicknesses fo special puposes ae also made. In the case of Celanese, these dimensions ae held within of an inch though constant testing duing the manufactue. This is vey impotant because the thickness of the base, to some extent, has an effect on the thickness of the oxide coating which, in tun has an effect on the ecoding chaacteistic of the tape. The 1 mil thickness is used fo the poduction of the exta -play acetate base tapes and the 11/2 mil is used fo standad tapes. The olls of film ae funished in widths of fom 6 inches up to a few feet as desied by the tape manufactues. The use of highly polished ' wheels fo casting the film give it a mio finish suface fo coating, fee fom scatches, ipples o othe defects.. -. J; i.. -o _; _ tó/ '.. -_- '"I s..: The impotance of the base mateial is shown in this illustation. In A, the oxide coating is of even depth because the suface of the bese is smooth. In B, vaiations in the suface (in this case pape base) pemit vaying thickness of oxide. Even though the top suface of the oxide may be flat and tue, the vaiations in depth will intoduce noise and vaiations in magnetism when ecoding is done on such a tape. _.. s I N i 7.1: I Celanese acetate is cast on lage, highly polished evolving wheels. The completed olls of film ae deliveed to the tape manufactues afte being caefully potected against damage and contamination fom dust and dit in tansit. POLYESTER BASE This is the film to which DuPont has applied the tademak "Myla." It is polyethylene teephthalate and is fomed by a condensation eaction between ethylene g ycol and teephthalic acid unde caefully contolled conditions. This eaction poduces a plastic suitable fo a ecoding tape base among othe uses. Since this mateial is an integal plastic and does not contain any plasticize to give the film its pliability, thee is nothing to change in its composition and the esult is a film of high stability and stength. Polyeste is a stonge mateial than acetate although it can be made to elongate and stay stetched wheeas acetate will beak. At a tempeatue of 57 F. and a elative humidity of 50% a.9 mil, 1/" stip of polyeste will yield at 4.2 pounds and beak at 7.6 pounds. A I mil acetate of the same width will yield at 3.7 pounds and beak at 3.9 pounds. Polyeste maintains its stength at high humidity levels and its moistue absoption is extemely ow, making it pactically impevious to changes in tempeatue and humidity cycles and thus it equies less cae in the matte of stoage. It is manufactued in 1/2 mil, 1 mil and 11/2 mil thicknesses fo geneal tape use and in heavie gauges fo specialized applications. Its highe stength has made it possible fo the tape manufactues to offe double -play tapes which have 2400 feet of tape on a seven inch eel. Such tape, howeve, because of its exteme thinness (one - sixth the thickness of a human hai) must be handled -with the geatest of cae since it is easily damaged. Myla is the latest membe of the plastic family to be used fo tape base and is one of the stongest plastics known. The 1/2 mil Myla, and just ecently the 1 mil Myla ae "tensilized" in manufactue. The pocess is a tade secet but the esult is a tape which has an inceased beak stength and less stetch. This facto is paticulaly impotant in video and instumentation tapes and is also of some impotance to the uses of the thinne audio tapes. As with acetate, the Myla film is available in olls of widths specified by the tape manufactues. POLYVINYL CHLORIDE This mateial has been widely used in Geman tapes but it has not gained acceptance in this county. It has excellent winding chaacteistics but is pone to stetch, although it will ecove afte a peiod of time. The Geman Luvithem is a fom of PVC which has been stetched in both diections befoe use. TENZAR This base mateial, band named Tenza by Minnesota Mining and Mfg. Company, was developed and is manufactued by them fo thei #311 tape. It is a plastic of 11/2 mils in thickness and, in the 1/4 inch width has a beak point of 8.2 pounds. It will stetch but vey slightly befoe beaking. The actual composition and family of plastics to which this base mateial belongs is a tade secet. It will not absob moistue no dy out. THE BINDER The pupose of the binde is, basically, to hold the ion oxide paticles on the base mateial. The fomulation of the binde is a citical step in the making of a satisfactoy tape fo, if not done popely, the coating 26

The binde itself may be any one of a numbe of compounds such as vinyl acetate, ethyl cellulose, and simila mateials. Added to this ae, of couse, the solvents, and thee may be two o moe of these, one to povide a thinne fo the binding mateial and the second to attack the base mateial so that the binde will "key" into it and fom a positive bond that will not shed off. The popotion of each must be vey exact o difficulty will ensue in the coating and dying pat of the tape making pocess. In addition to is added so that tween the oxide It also seves to powdes tend to ion oxide does the binde and solvents, a wetting agent the binde can thooughly pemeate be - paticles and poduce a smooth mixtue. shoten the milling time. Since all fine stick togethe and fom lumps, and the this, it is vital that they be boken up the mixtue. The wetting agent assists and dispesed in in this also. A lubicant, usually one of the silicones is also added so that the tape will pass smoothly ove the head and educe head wea, and it also educes any sticking popensities that the binde may have. A plasticize is added to make the binde flexible and a esin to add toughness to the coating. The amount of the latte is also citical as too little will cause the coating to flake wheeas too much will cause it to be sticky. THE OXIDE A numbe of metal families exhibit magnetic popeties but ion is the best of all, and ion (feic) oxide has so fa poved the most suitable mateial fo magnetic ecoding. As in the case of both the binde and the film base, the oxide manufactue must take geat cae to tun out a unifom poduct. With it, you can actually tun you ecode into a miniatue boadcasting station, capable of tansmitting the signal fom you ecoded tapes to any and all adios anywhee in you house. And nicest of all, aside fom its low cost, is that you don't even need a license to opeate. One of the best of the wieless boadcastes is the Knight - Kit ' RADIO-BROADCASTER/AMPLIFIER" unit put out by Allied Radio. It's a fun -to-assemble kit that can be used with a ecod playe o with just a micophone (accoding to the specs put out by Allied). Oddly enough, though Allied devotes almost a full catalog page to descibing this fascinating unit, no mention at all is made of its most fabulous use: with a tape ecode. Now, befoe we get into the actual assembly of this unit, let me whet you appetite with just a few of the possible uses of a pesonal tansmitting "station." In the fist place, as oiginally intended, the Boadcaste can be hooked up so as to boadcast music fom a single ecod playe to as many adios as you like. O a micophone (with nothing else needed) can be plugged into the unit and you can boadcast you own voice though neaby adios. But the eal fun comes in using it with you tape ecode. Used the same way as with a ecod playe, this means that you can now locate you ecode anywhee in the house, and any membe of the family can eadily tune in on the ecoding. Mom can have it coming though he kitchen adio. Bothe o siste can listen in in thei bedoom. And even you, if you wish, can tuck a tiny tansisto adio into you shit pocket and go out and stoll in you gaden while listening to a favoite ecoding. Pesonally, I think it's sensational! Natually, it doesn't take long to decide that if tansmitting pe-ecoded tapes is so much fun, then-heckwhy not "go on the ai" with a few pogams of you own. Let's say you decide to make a tape of youself as a disk jockey, with a combination of fiendly chatte and commecial music. And to do a pofessional -type job hee, let's go about it something like this: (1) Set youself up with you ecode, a micophone, a ecod playe and some 45's o LP's, and put togethe a casual pogam of fiendly chatte, intespaced with the ecods that you play. If you don't know exactly what to say and/o you don't have a ecod playe and ecods handy, that's no poblem at all. Just ecod a local disk jockey's adio pogam and use that mateial. Copy the chatte down and adapt it fo you own use, to ead ove the mike when ecoding. And emove the musical selections intact (music only) so that you can splice them into you own taped pogam late-. And it's a good idea to ecod and use the egula jock's opening and closing themes too, fo that pofessional touch. And also save a couple of ecoded commecials to splice in... though you can easily do that pat youself, o maybe have you wife o some fiend do these fo you. So now you have you completed tape, which should be exactly thity minutes long, say, of well -edited mateial. (2) Now comes the big foole! You could play this tape, as is, to you fiends and it would vey likely be no big deal. Nice, but nothing eally geat. So you'e going to fool them by NOT letting them listen to the ecode, but-with the ecode hidden away so they won't even know it's aound and woking-you'e going to boadcast the pogam so they will think it's a egula adio boadcast. To make this as ealistic as possible, ecod eight o ten minutes of the closing of almost any egula adio pogam (except a news boadcast, which is "dated") and also ecod eight o ten minutes of the opening of anothe adio pogam. Now, on a seven-inch eel (using eithe 1 -mil extended play tape o ecoding at 33/4 ips so it'll all get on), put this all togethe with the closing of the egula adio pogam at the beginning and the opening of the othe adio pogam at the end and with you own pesonal disk jockey pogam sandwiched (spliced) in between. 29

Y Left: you may have to expeiment a bit to discove the coect output fom you ecode. Fo the Wollensak shown hee, the pope hookup is fom the Peamp Output Socket (via shielded cable, of couse) to the CRYSTAL input on the Boadcaste. The exta "blank" phone plug is necessay so you can silence the ecode's speake. Right: finally, tun you adio on (eithe the table model o even a tiny potable) and tune fom 600 to 1500 kc to find a dial setting whee no egula adio station is head. Then, with the ecode playing a tape, use a scewdive to adjust the Boadcaste's fequency contol until the tape you ae playing is head at the adio. (3) You guests ae in the living oom, you'e all sitting aound talking, when you "suddenly" emembe that you wee a guest disk jockey at a local adio station ecently and TONIGHT is when the pe-ecoded pogam is due to come on. You tell you guests it's due in just a few minutes, so you go out of the oom to get a adio so they all can listen. While out, of couse, you stat up you ecode which is hooked up to the little Boadcaste and with you specially pepaed tape. Without a adio tuned in, all is silent... so you gab up a table model adio and go back to you guests and plug it in (see below). The adio wams up, you tune back and foth acoss the dial, appaently seaching fo you pogam, and finally stop on you "own" station. Natually, since the taped egula adio boadcast is still on, this sounds like all the est of the stations you've been tuning in. Then, a few minutes late the egula pogam ends and is followed by an announce who gives the station beak which you've peviously taped and left in, and then YOU ae on the ai, with opening theme music and all. Man, you fiends will flip! ASSEMBLING THE WIRELESS BROADCASTER The Knight -Kit "Radio-Boadcaste/Amplifie" is available fom the Allied Radio Cop., 100 N. Westen Ave., Chicago 80, Ill., fo $ Ask fo thei No. 83Y706, and add postage fo 23/4 lbs. shpg. wt. As I mentioned befoe, this boadcaste can be used by itself, with just the addition of a micophone necessay so you can boadcast to neaby adios. You can use you egula ecoding mike, o ode the inexpensive cystal micophone Allied supplies especially fo this use. Thei No. 99S519, $2.95 plus postage on 1 lb. NOTE! Also available, if you'd like futhe advance infomation egading the boadcaste, ae the complete plans and assembly instuctions fo this unit. Send 15 to Allied and ask fo thei Instuction Manual No. 38K297, fo thei Wieless Radio-Boadcaste/Amplifie. No additional postage is necessay. It's an extemely easy kit to assemble, and is a wondeful state fo anyone who has often thought about saving money by assembling his own electonics kits, but hasn't quite had the neve to tackle one yet. Thee aen't vey many pats, actually, and the whole unit can be assembled 0 4 { You and you fiends can have many hous of fun with a "Wieless Boadcaste" hooked up to you ecode. This allows you to actually make up and boadcast you own taped shows thu adios located anywhee in the house, with no need fo diect connections. 30

You and a few guests can sing and play-act though the adio fom the next oom, fo the est to hea. O you can use a small tansisto adio as shown hee, with eaphone attached fo silent listening, to make with a little electonc magic fo the mystification of all. Meet Pincess Baitone, a stange to you paty guests who looks into he cystal ball and mysteiously tells them all about themselves. But don't tell anyone she has a potable adio concealed unde he dess and an eaphone in he ea, binging he the needed "info" fom a confedeate boadcasting fom anothe oom. and the pe -cu wies soldeed in place in a single evening. Follow Allied's explicit step-by-step instuctions and you'll have youself a completed Boadcaste befoe you know it. And even if you've neve soldeed befoe, Allied will show you how easy it is to do. You'll have to buy a soldeing ion sepaately, of couse, and I advise spending enough on a good one because as soon as you discove how eally simple, and how much fun. kit -building can be. you'e going to be doing it again and again. I have both a I00 -watt soldeing gun and a 47I5 -watt Unga 'pencil -type" soldeing ion. And of the two, I pefe the chisel -tipped Unga ion fo kit assembly, with an exta long tip -element fo eaching into cowded assemblies. But this is a pesonal pefeence, so it might be a good idea if you talked to a fiend who is adept at soldeing (o pehaps to a local electonics deale o adio epai man) befoe making you final choice. CAUTION! The kit instuctions say to use plenty of heat when soldeing, and to keep the wie leads on esistos and capacitos as shot as possible. But be caeful! It's best to avoid too much heat-despite 11lied's instuctions somewhat to the contay-and to keep the leads at least one inch long each, to avoid possible oveheating of the pats. especially esistos... which can change value o even be uined completely if oveheated. Since the instuctions which come with this Boadcaste unit mention nothing at all about using it w ith tape e- -,_ codes, you may have to expeiment a bit to discove the ight output fom you ecode (to plug into the Boadcaste). The cystal input on the Boadcaste woked best fo me, meaning that the impedance output fom the ecode must (at least appoximately) match this. Auxiliay speake output is low impedance, so that's no good. Eithe use the ecode output maked "To Auxiliay Amplifie'' o look up in you ecode manual just how to get this sot of output. With my little Cescent ecode, this meant using the egula "Aux. Speake" output, but with a two -conducto instead of a thee -conducto phone plug. The plug wiing was vey simple. The Wollensak (in the photos ) meant coining out of the "Pe -Amp Output"- of the 1st tack, of couse, since this is fo monaual useand going to the Boadcaste's 'XTAI_" input as shown. A FINAL NOTE! It may take a bit of "fiddling" to get the best esults fom you paticula Recode/Boadcaste combination. You will have to expeiment a bit, the fist time, to find the best (highest) volume level you can use at the Boadcaste so as not to cause distotion in the tansmitted signal. At the same ime expeiment to find the best volume fo the ecode. With these once set and noted fo futue use, you can do you final "listening" volume adjusting at the adios. And when tuning a adio to the fequency you have chosen, see if you don't get a slightly bette lone when you'e a bit "off" fom the exact tuning cente. t_ 31

32 NEW PRODUCT REPORT STAIF).TED Poduct: Head Demagnetize HD -3 Pice: $5.95 Manufactue: Robins Industies Cop., Flushing 54, N. Y. ; t~ w,,-.,.,...- ROBINS HEAD DEMAGNETIZER... small unit has tip that fits in many ecode tape slots without emoving head coves. THE Robins Head Demagnetize HD -3 is one of the smallest units on the maket and will take up little space in the ecodist's kit. Howeve its smallness, appoximately 114 inch in diamete by 2 inches long and with a 11/2 inch shaft has not impaied its capabilities. The amount of flux poduced at the tip of the shaft is adequate and it is of heavy enough design so that it does not oveheat. We left the unit on fo six minutes and at the end of that time it was only comfotably wam. 1 Ea Many heavie degausses have duty cycles, such as two minutes on, thee minutes off, which must be obseved to pevent oveheating. This usually applies to those units designed to ease a eel of tape. The tip of the shaft is coveed with plastic to pevent accidental scatching of the head when the unit is used. To pefom the demagnetizing of the heads, the tip of the shaft is applied to the head and moved along the suface of the head fo a peiod of fom 10 to 15 seconds. Following this, the demagnetize is emoved fom contact with the head and vey slowly withdawn to a distance of thee feet befoe the cuent is cut off. The cuent should neve be cut with the demagnetize in contact with the head as this will tend to magnetize it athe than demagnetizing. This, of couse, is tue with any demagnetize. Demagnetization takes place in the head by the application of the altenating cuent which is gadually weakened by emoving the demagnetize. This "shakes up" the magnetic domains and destoys any magnetism. If the cuent is cut with the demagnetize in contact with the head, the final suge of cuent though the coils will magnetize the head. The slow withdawal is vey impotant. Demagnetization of heads at egula intevals (about evey 10 hous of playing time) will insue pope high fequency esponse and also pevent the head fom adding any noise to the tapes. Pofessional ecodists will also use a demagnetize befoe evey ecoding session. We found this demagnetize vey convenient to use. It was tied on fou diffeent bands of ecodes and the heads wee easily eached on all. Regula head demagnetization pays dividends in ecode pefomance and with this unit it is vey easy to do. o f j t_/yd C c ^.. 7 The shaft of the demagnetize is of small The demagnetize shaft will slip down be - diamete and this coupled with the angled tween the head coves on most ecodes. bend makes it easy to each the heads. It should be woked fo 10 to 15 seconds. Afte the 10 to 15 seconds have elapsed the demagnetize is withdawn. Cuent is not cut off until it is thee feet fom ecode. 32
