N-NW 1 NEWFIRM DESCRIPTION: This is a multiyear project to develop a wide field, near infrared imager designed for use at the Cassegrain focus of the Mayall 4-M telescope. A draft of the concepts for this instrument can be found at FY 03 Budgeted Hours 15,300 Budgeted Capital $383,505 Actual Hours 10,678.8 Actual Capital $384,878 GENERAL: The NEWFIRM team is hard at work on the top assembly definition of the instrument and in dealing with any remaining system interface issues. Extensive thermal modeling of the detector, its mount, and the surrounding environment is in process, with promising early results. All instrument optics are ordered, with the U of A selected to build the three largest lenses. NOAO has assumed responsibility for procuring blanks for the large optics, and will provide these to the U of A. The order for these blanks will be placed in early August. Coatings for the large optics are being addressed. NOAO is capable of coating the two smaller of the large lenses, but a vendor to coat the largest lens is still an issue. The Guider optical and mechanical designs are on track and optics for the guider will be ordered in early August. There has been a delay in starting the guider electrical design, but there is no impact as yet on the schedule due to a sufficient contingency time allowance. A camera for use in the guider has been ordered for evaluation. The project is on schedule except for delays in starting work on both instrument and guider Electronics. There is no impact on the June 2005 instrument delivery date to KPNO at this time. SCHEDULE: A milestone schedule was due this month, but has not been completed due to other commitments. This schedule will be provided starting next month. ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Thermal modeling and analysis of the detector and mount is in process Top Assembly design in process and nearly completed All optics orders placed except for Guider optics PLANS: Order large optics blanks by August 5th Start Lens Cell subassembly 3D design by mid-august Start mechanical fabrication tasks in the Instrument Shop by the end of August Complete Guider electrical interface and design documentation by the end of August Personnel Changes: None. 6 Infrared R&D Program (K. M. Merrill) Al Fowler and Bill Ball have been testing our Science Grade Orion 1 module in the lab system. Noise problems with the electronics were found and ameliorated. System noise is now low enough to allow meaningful tests of the Orion II devices to proceed. The first Orion 2 readouts were delivered to RVS for testing and 24 of 24 wafers were probed. The results are very encouraging. RVS has verified that the row and column deselect circuitry works as intended. The yield high quality "science grade" devices is much improved: 50% of the devices show operability >= 99.5% 30% of the devices show operability >= 99.8% and there are a number of perfect die. We expect to receive an Orion II bare mux for testing by mid-august, if not sooner. Based on a preliminary report from RVS, it appears that the new procedures for handling and processing of the InSb detector wafers has led to improved flatness of the processed parts. This should translate into flatter detectors at the end of the line and assure that the detector material will be of more uniform thickness after thinning via diamond turning, which in turn should improve QE uniformity across the arrays. Al Fowler and Michael Merrill worked on our MSS noted below: Orion II: The Second Generation Readout Multiplexer for the Largest Infrared Hybrid Focal Plane K. M. Merrill, A. Fowler, and W. Ball, NOAO A. Henden and F. Vrba, USNO Flagstaff C. McCreight, NASA Ames ABSTRACT The Orion program developed a 2048x2048 infrared focal plane using InSb PV diodes for detectors. Several of these focal planes have been produced. However, the yield of the original readout multiplexer was not up to expectations owing to unanticipated shorts in the fabrication process. Since these shorts occurred at the metal 1-metal 2 crossover points and there are over 9 million such crossovers, the design had to be modified to work around these problems. Thus the Orion II readout was developed. The work is being done at the Raytheon Vision Systems (RVS) division (most recently Raytheon Infrared Operations, but better known as SBRC) by many of the same people who created the Orion I and ALADDIN focal planes. The design is very similar to the Orion I design with the addition of circuitry to work around the effect of the metal 1-metal 2 shorts. In this paper we will discuss the unique design features of this device as well as present test data taken from the new devices. The paper will be presented by Michael Merrill at the SPIE Annual Meeting in San Diego on August 6, ETS Projects & Departments 6 July 2003

Optical Coating Laboratory (G. Poczulp) Optical Shop N-NX Shop clean up and reorganization continues with the effort this month divided between the mezzanine, ground floor and basement levels. Two shelving units were relocated on the mezzanine to make way for a planned new doorway into the old second floor machine shop. The lathe and mill on the ground floor were exchanged for better units that became available when the second floor machine shop was cleared out. While the machine movers were on site, they were enlisted to move the 100 Hindle sphere (located in the basement) to a spot closer to the wall thereby allowing safe crane access to the basement. SOML High Bay Lease The first secondary blank was lapped with 40µ aluminum oxide and measured with the swing arm profilometer. There was interest in verifying the figure using the IR interferometer at SOML and a second blank was brought in for grinding with the stressed lap. Work on the second blank appears to be going smoothly. On 24 July 2003, K. Kenagy and S. Miller invited several vendors to visit the NOAO site to request proposals for fabricating and installing a sunshade device on the west exterior high bay door, with a possible extension around the south wall of the high bay area. J. Dunlop and J. Barr will review any proposals that are ultimately submitted. ATST Seeing Monitor Interferometer S-NP Representatives from Hartford Insurance, 4-D Technologies, NSO, SOML, and NOAO met in the optics shop to inspect the remains of the four-channel, phase shifting interferometer that was extensively damaged at Big Bear Solar Observatory in late May. New Focus did not respond to several invitations to attend. It was decided that it will be necessary to send the laser and camera from the interferometer to their respective manufacturers for inspection and evaluation. Legal representatives from Hartford Insurance took possession of the New Focus mounts and the attachment points from the interferometer while representatives from 4-D took the empty shipping container. The interferometer remains in the optics shop. 4-m Cassegrain Rotator N-NK The large (10 x14 ), Cassegrain rotator mirror was successfully aluminized in the NRC-3177 chamber. Two separate coating runs were required because a second mirror is bonded to the backside of the large mirror. One of the three axial mounting pads came off during reinstallation of the mirror into the cell. Examination showed the bonding had been done with black RTV and after consulting with S. Andree the pad was reattached with a thick layer. A smaller two-sided mirror for the rotator will be done early next month and both pieces will be delivered no later than August 5 th to conform to the Kitt Peak shutdown schedule ETS Projects & Departments 10 July 2003

Programming Group (R. Marshall) Behzad Abareshi Installed a third hard drive on the WTTM machine. This drive is an image of the main drive, and serves as fallback in case of a serious crash or total disk failure. Set up a new Linux machine to serve as the main development platform for the Hydra upgrade project. I configured it as a RAID 1, using Linux software RAID. The performance, even during mass compilations, is very good. Compared numerous versions of the Hydra source code, and found two that were the latest, each with minor fixes not present in the other. I merged these two, cleaned up most of the bugs and violations detectable by gcc, and ported the code to Linux. We plan thorough testing of this code, both under SunOS and Linux, first in simulation mode and real operation. After these tests, the code will serve as the baseline for the Hydra upgrade project. Nick Buchholz Completed wildfire ORION2 ucode Version to turn off rows and columns. Continued development of the MONSOON software o Worked on final design and coding for: start time command configuration. attribute command library ppx command library detector specific command library o Modified libraries to accommodate changes needed by the above development Worked on design of configuration file/database and description of required information. Completed and presented the MONSOON Software Design Review. Continued to support hardware debugging and development of ALADDIN_II and ORION_II systems. Phil Daly Shelby Gott No report (on vacation). Fixed a startup problem with the Bench GUI in which "bsmid" would fail to start on "vanilla" if the MPG router wasn't up and running yet on "bone". Re-compiled "bsmid", adding a loop to re-try the initial router connection until it succeeds. A fixed time delay wouldn't work, because operators are not re-starting all computers at the same time following a lightning shutdown. Assisted Charles with hardware troubleshooting of the SES and battery chargers. Continued work on the 2-meter guider upgrade, writing a communication link and diagnostic GUI in tcl/tk for the X & Y probe motor controllers. While doing this, I discovered a bug that would also apply to "ciascomm" in the CassIAS software, and spent some time tracking it down. The bug would cause loss of communication with the remaining motor controllers if any one of them were offline, but only when using an iserver (not in RS-422 mode). This ETS Projects & Departments 13 July 2003

wasn't seen in CassIAS testing, because all four Motor Modules were working when we converted from RS-422 to iserver. Currently: setting up my new ASL Linux machine to replace "onion". Bob Marshall Projects: Attended the MONSOON Software PDR. Provided Behzad with archived versions of the Hydra source code from backup tapes. Operations: Continued work on the WIYN WTTM HArcon system "navajo". At the T&E did a major disk cleanup of the IRAF and Arcon software and verified operations. This cleanup completed the work started in June. While at the T&E helped to debug problems with the WTTM filter wheel (bad serial port) and HArcon downloading (bad HArcon box). Also fixed some minor problems with the software on "navajo". Setup and tested the latest "navajo" files on the CCD Lab system "dolly" for use in debugging the bad HArcon box. Maintenance: 4-meter: Mosaic TV offset, PMTC documents. Linux guiders: Continued problems with the 2.1-meter guider computer had us suspecting the memory. Ordered ECC memory and a new motherboard. Other: Ordered new Linux systems for Shelby and myself. Setup my new system. Dave Mills The main effort this month was devoted to the mountain database project. The database machine is now installed so I started populating it with the historical data and preparing scripts to perform the live updates. The aim is to come out of shutdown with 4m/2m/feed databases up and running with historical and live contents. Depending upon how this goes there will also be more or less sophisticated web based tools to query the data. Investigated arcon problems at WIYN. Revised the telemetry clients to startup almost immediately after the arcon interface is "ready". Obtained WIYN header client code from Ron Marzke, looks good, I will probably make some small changes to use FitsTcl rather than the current strategy of parsing the raw header with perl code. Did some more analysis of the Roper Cascade datasets and investigated the new commercial offering from TI. Completed setup of the new software guider at the feed. This required rebuilding the feed TCS (a long forgotten art) in order to remove index reset code. Made a couple of foiled attempts at on-sky testing... waiting for post monsoon skies. Did a lot of memory/cpu/mb testing to identify the source of the crashing (old) 2meter guider computer. Solution was to replace motherboard. Setup ASL downtown spare with MS Visual C++ to act as development machine for DIMM. Started looking at the code. Peter Ruckle Acceptance test preparation for GNIRS on August 11 has been going on. The tasks that need to be done are: ETS Projects & Departments 14 July 2003

Risk Management (C. Gessner) No OSHA reportable injuries were reported this month. The insect bite reported last month has been recorded on the OSHA 300 log. This calendar year, NOAO Tucson has experienced two recordable injuries. July 2, an employee truck caught on fire in the Tucson main parking lot due to a faulty fuel line. Thanks to CAS staff for quickly calling 911, the Tucson Fire Department extinguished the fire in less than five minutes. July 28, The NOAO Employees Association reported about $ from the viewing telescope proceeds turned up missing from an employee s office. Tucson police were notified and assigned a case number ( ). A new procedure has been developed for handling money. July 28, the Sells commuter van was involved in a single car accident. During heavy rains, the van encountered pooling water on highway 86 and began to hydroplane. The driver lost control of the van and went into the ditch. It was reported that all occupants were wearing seat belts and no one was injured. The T.O. Nation Police Department responded to the accident and no citations were issued. The van has minor damage to the right sliding door. Complete Landscaping has finished their work on Kitt Peak by creating thirty - foot defensible spaces around critical structures. The T.O. Nation Fire Department is actively working on approval for the Fuel Reduction Resolution Plan, which is the long-term strategy for hazard fuel reduction on the T.O. Nation that includes Kitt Peak. Related to reducing the fire threat, the Kitt Peak Visitor Center has reported 6.88 inches of rainfall in July. Provided assistance to the Mayall 4M shutdown including drafting the risk management plan and advising the project leadership during the shutdown. Specific topics included site access, lockout tagout, fall protection, personal protective equipment, ladder safety, platforms, communications and leadership, industrial hygiene, environmental compliance and others. A few near misses verified the need for hardhats and steel toe footwear. The Optics and Instrument shop elevators project continues. Through a number of conversations with Hotchkiss Elevator and the Arizona Industrial Commission, The State Elevator Inspectors have stated that NOAO cannot modify the elevators to transport people. We are now considering a meeting with the State Elevator Inspectors to discuss options including a variance. Helped Roger Repp with the strategy and communications to Tucson employees during the removal of heavy equipment from the Instrument Shop upper mezzanine area. Provided editing and risk management comments to Mario Gonzalez for the newly created English version of the Cerro Tololo and Cerro Pachon AURA-O Evacuation Plan. Acquired new Kitt Peak emergency cell phones to replace old technology phones. The fast attack and the phone center numbers are the same as the old numbers. Accompanied Mark Grushka, U of A Risk Management and Janet Reeves, Pima County Risk Management during a visit to U of A s Mount Bigelow and Mt. Lemmon for a half day on July 30. We met with Jim Grantham, Steward Observatory Supervisor and discussed their strategy for reducing the risk from wildfires. We learned that they have been working on a thirty-foot defensible space and a one hundred and fifty foot urban wild land interface. During the fire threat, soaker hoses and sprinklers were placed on critical structures, exterior vents were covered with aluminum sheets and taped, key staff possess wild land firefighting certifications, critical equipment was removed from the site, tenders with foam machines were readied, hotshot crews provided back burning and a good relationship with the fire department was maintained. Consulted and worked on a number of risk management issues including key cards, workers compensation, WIYN industrial hygiene, preparing information for my September visit to Cerro Tololo, safety shoe policy, GNIRS lift, the potential use of xenon in dewars, head hazards, lightening risk, Kitt Peak visitor signs, MSDS management, battery disposal and modifications to the Kitt Peak fast attack vehicle.
