Get tips on doing family history research or bring your child to one of the many programs we have for kids ages 2 to 18. Come to a presentation on completing the FAFSA financial aid forms for college bound students, or how to use LinkedIn for business. Enjoy movie screenings, participate in one of the many book discussion series, or download e-books, audiobooks, movies and TV through Hoopla and Overdrive. Log into one of the several online databases from home or at the Library and learn a new language with Mango Languages, take a practice exam for school or a new career with Learning Express, fix your car using Automobile Repair Reference Center, or research your investments with Morningstar Investment Research Center. Download the boopsie app and have the Library s catalog at your fingertips, access your record, or use the locator in any store to see if the library owns the book so you can try before you buy. And, of course, we have over 120,000 physical books, audiobooks, DVDs, and magazines that you may borrow, with new materials being added every week. So come and explore. Resolutions: Renew or start membership with the Friends of the Bethel Public Library. Membership dues help fund programming and museum passes, and more, for the Library. A nice bonus of doing something good for the community is that everyone can reap the benefits by attending the diverse programs that the Library offers, or by using museum passes for big discounts on entrance fees to many Connecticut attractions. Have you taken out one of the e- readers from the Library yet? That was made possible by a grant from the Friends also. So, we offer a sincere thank you to all who have supported and continue to support the Friends through your memberships, donations, and Book Cellar purchases. We couldn t do anything without you. 2 C H I L D R E N S CHESS PROGRAM S If you have a child or grandchild who would like to play chess with other children his/her age, the Michelle Arnhold Children s Library has a chess program for them! Participants need to know the basics of the game before they attend a meeting; though from time to time we ll hold a beginner or advanced class if needed. The Pages Chess Club is for children grades 1-3, and the Knights Chess Club is for children in grades 4-7. Pages meet on the fourth Wednesday of the month from September to April at 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Knights meet on the second Wednesday of the month from October to May. Each group meets 8 times during the course of the school year. Staff and an adult volunteer, who has taught chess for many years, moderate the games. They offer assistance and guidance when needed. They also make sure that the children enjoy themselves, play the game correctly and play with a number of opponents during the evening. Each summer we hold a tournament for the children who have attended any of the chess meetings that school year. Tournaments are held in July on consecutive Wednesdays. At the end of the last tournament game, the top three players are awarded a prize at the awards ceremony held for all the children who participated and their families. Registration for each meeting is necessary and begins two weeks prior to the date of the meeting. Contact the Children s Library for details. ~Marianne Kindya, Children s Library Assistant N EW SERV I C E F O R MOBI L E DEVICE USERS Mobile devices have become an integral part of our lives. They help us to stay connected with people, read books in a digital format, stream music and movies, and much more. If you are an ipad, Android, or Kindle user, the Library offers a new service for you. Once a month, we host a meeting for users of one of these devices. Our goal is to share common problems or difficulties that you might be experiencing with these devices and to work together to find solutions. This is not one-on-one instruction, but rather an exchange of ideas and possible solutions. For those with a valid Bethel Library card, we offer free audiobooks, e-books, music, and video content that can be downloaded to these devices. The Library also provides boopsie, a library app that will give you instant access to the Library Catalog, your personal account, and more. We ll discuss how to download these services and content to your devices. Groups meet on the first Monday of the month at 6:30 pm. Android users will meet in January and ipad users in February. Please register for these programs and send us your questions ahead of time. This will give us time to research the problem and find the best solution. Looking for that summer reading title or other assigned book for school? In addition to Bethel High s OverDrive e- book collection, the Bethel Public Library also offers over 5,500 e-books and more than 2,000 audio books through OverDrive, including many summer reading and other assigned books. The Library also offers several different resources, that you may use with your Bethel Library card, that will provide you with a copy of the book you need to read. A single search in the online catalog will list the title you re looking for in a variety of formats from different sources such as Hoopla and Project Gutenberg. Another source for audio and e-books, provided by the State Library, is One Click Digital, which is available through our website. Hoopla is a digital resource for music, audiobooks, movies and TV shows. With Hoopla you may borrow any item at any time. There are no waitlists! You may check out up to 5 items each month through Hoopla. Project Gutenberg is a collection of high quality free e-books that are in the public domain, meaning their copyrights have expired. We recently added over 47,000 Project Gutenberg titles to our catalog. So, if you are looking for a copy of A Tale of Two Cities, you ll see listings in the catalog from Overdrive, Hoopla, and Project Gutenberg in electronic format, and, of course, hardcopies of the book on the Library s shelves. 3 N EW BOOK SECTION R E AD E R TO R E AD E R V I E W E R TO VIEWER Did you know that newly purchased books for adults have their own section on the first floor? It s located next to the Circulation Desk, on the right as you walk into the library. The first set of shelves is devoted to all types of fiction, including the genres of mystery, science fiction and fantasy. All of these books are shelved alphabetically by author. The second set of shelves is devoted to nonfiction books. Biographies are shelved first, alphabetically by the subject s last name. The rest of nonfiction is shelved by subject using a Dewey Decimal number. At the tail end of the nonfiction section are the new large type books. These also are shelved in order with fiction first, followed by genre fiction, biography, and nonfiction. All new books are loaned for two weeks. However, they can be renewed twice if no one else is waiting, giving you a total of 6 weeks with the book. And, if you don t find what you are looking for, please feel free to ask at the Circulation Desk. We may be waiting to re-shelve the book and might be able to find it for you. Or, if the book is checked out, we are always happy to put a request into our system to hold the book for you. Savage Harvest, A Tale of Cannibals, Colonialism, and Michael Rockefeller s Tragic Quest for Primitive Art by Carl Hoffman This is a very different book, for me, yet a very interesting one. It is also quite disturbing. After all, cannibalism is not a subject most people would like to read about! The most nasty and descriptive parts are in the beginning of the book; the rest of the book delves into the history of New Guinea in the late 1950 s, setting the scene when Michael Rockefeller lived there in 1960 and The activities of the region s government, military, and religious life is examined, showing their relationship with the native population. The author did extensive research in the archives of many European institutions as well as interviews with those who knew Mr. Rockefeller when he disappeared. Hoffman also journeyed to New Guinea twice, living with the natives for more than a month. He learned their language, and studied their culture, spiritualism, and superstitions. While their way of life is primitive, their art, sculpture, carving, and boat and house building is quite extraordinary! Many of the prizes that Michael Rockefeller picked up there are on display in the Rockefeller Museum of Primitive Art in New York City. If you like history, with a twist, and want to learn something new, this book is for you. Reviewer: Marianne Kindya Words and Pictures, starring Clive Owen, Juliette Binoche, Amy Brenneman, Bruce Davison, Keegan Connor Tracy (PG-13) An interesting question: which is more powerful and has more impact the written word or a work of art? Clive Owen plays an English teacher trying to inspire his prep school students. But the teacher is suffering from writer s block after an successful book, and resorts to drinking in order to cope. A new art teacher (played by Juliette Binoche) arrives and Owen s character is drawn to her. Finally someone is capable of taking and returning his challenging banter. Also once famous in her field, the art teacher is held back by a debilitating disease. The banter turns into a challenge involving the entire school to answer one question. Reviewer: RFM Editor s Note: February book discussions with movie tie-in! The book, West with the Night, is the acclaimed memoir of Beryl Markham, who was the first person to fly solo across the Atlantic. The film, Out of Africa, is the Academy Award winner about the life and writing of Danish author Isak Dinesen. What do these two classics have in common?
