1 March 5 th 2015 DESIGN DAYS DUBAI ANNOUNCES 2015 PUBLIC PROGRAMME Design Days Dubai returns to The Venue in Downtown Dubai for its fourth year, 16 to 20 March The international design fair unveils its Public Programme; a series of free handson design workshops, designer Q&As and demonstrations that offer insight into the world s latest design processes and trends. Design Days Dubai s Public Programme is sponsored by Dubai Design District (d3). Participants to experience hands-on workshops with designers from the UAE, Italy, Morocco, Taiwan and more The Fair s 2015 edition features inaugural short-film sessions, a mentorship session and professional panel discussions with world renowned design experts. Design Days Dubai, held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, and held in partnership with Dubai Culture, returns for its fourth edition in The Middle East and South Asia s only collectible design fair, today announced this year s expanded Public Programme of talks, workshops, panel discussions and conversations, and short films. Returning to the unique location of The Venue, next to the world s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, in Downtown Dubai, Design Days Dubai has the continued generous support of returning sponsors, including French high-jewelry maison Van Cleef & Arpels, Emaar, and Audi. The international design fair s free educational Public Programme, sponsored by Dubai Design District (d3), offers something for everyone, be they newcomers to design, children, students, design enthusiasts and professionals, as part of Design Days Dubai s ongoing advocacy of art and design in the city. Due to the popularity of 2014 s comprehensive Public Programme, for the first time the fair s diverse schedule of intimate events featuring regional and international designers will run for five days. 2 Workshops Monday 16th to Thursday 19th, 11am and 6.30pm. Friday 21st, 2pm to 4pm. The 11 workshops scheduled provide participants, from beginners and interested parties through to design professionals - with the opportunity to put diverse design concepts and theory into practice in a hands-on environment under the guidance of 20 respected design professionals. To name just a few: Turin-based designer Ilia Potemine celebrate old-school trends, working by hand to create uniquely crafted furniture with a vision. Sara Ouhaddou leads a hands-on workshop entitled Impression//Impression Tiles, which questions the traditional code in order to re-write the famous Moroccan art of mosaic. Taiwanese designer Kevin Chou, presents a new look at the traditional craft of bamboo weaving. Cut & Paste Creating Contemporary Products from Traditional Islamic Art, led by Rana Salam encourages participants to extract and manipulate visual elements from their surroundings, be it Arabic/Islamic geometric shapes, letterform and packaging or textiles. Panel s Monday 16th to Thursday 19th, 7 to 8 pm. The fair s four keynote panel discussions and conversations will consider the highlights of each day of the international design fair and will feature more than 16 speakers across 12 differing nationalities. Panel members will candidly share insider views and thoughts with participants, with topics traversing the world of design including, lighting, publishing, architecture and typography. The panel discussions open with Design And Architecture: from micro-space to urban scape within which leading panelists will explore the multiplicity of formats and scales of various disciplines bringing forth their expertise in the discussion and relating it to the city of Dubai, Celebrating Nada Debs 10 years of Design is a further conversation highlight. Respected panelists taking part in Design Days Dubai s 2015 public programme include; Benjamin Aranda (Aranda\Lasch), Rogier Van der Heide (Zumtobel), Birgit Lohmann (designboom), Giuseppe Moscatello (1971 Design Space and Maraya Art Centre), Huda Abi Smitshuijzen Abifares (Khatt Foundation), Shamsa Alabbar (Shamsa Alabbar), Cherine Magrabi (House of Today) and Amer Aldour (inter act design studio). In 2015, the Design Days Dubai Public Programme is also pleased to welcome the support of Audi, which will open the fair s Audi Lounge nightly to the public for the from 6 to 7pm. The talks offer participants first-hand insights from a wide array of designers in an intimate setting as they discuss their work, trends and design concepts. The talks open on Monday 16 March with the leading Beirut design studio, David/Nicolas, whose founders will discuss their retro futuristic approach and delve into the notion of timelessness in design. Short Film Screening Friday 20th, 6pm to 7 pm. Design Days Dubai s public programme now also encompasses an inaugural short-film schedule on the last day of the fair, which considers some of the design world s most influential ideas, such as Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich s iconic Barcelona Armchair, and Serge Mouille s Black Lamps.
