5 INTRODUCING OHINA STUDIOS In 2018 Ohina created its first ever annual Filmmaker's Lab with the goal of furthering our mission of supporting and educating the next generation of Hawai i storytellers and filmmakers. The inaugural lab was hosted by Black Panther screenwriter Joe Robert Cole. Over the course of a two-day workshop, Cole met with local filmmakers Mitchel Viernes, Erin Lau, Ty Sanga, Alika Maikau, Sky Bruno, and Vilsoni Hereniko to discuss their short film concepts, edit 10-page screenplays they had written specifically for the workshop, and hear their pitches in a Hollywood studio-type environment, complete with questions, notes, and feedback from Cole and the Ohina executive team. Ohina was proud to announce a Greenlight Award to Hawai i filmmaker Mitchel Viernes, granting him full support towards the creation of his short film, Kalewa. This includes camera, equipment, and rentals provided by Hawaii Camera, Hawaii Media, Inc, and other partners as well as funding, marketing assistance, as well as a slot at next year s showcase. Additionally, a special Ohina Judge s Choice Award was also given to filmmaker Alika Maikau, who received personal mentorship from Cole to further develop his screenplay. All 2017 Writer s Lab participants will receive support for their short film projects and have been greenlit for Ohina s 2018 festival. The launch of this program marks a new beginning for Ohina, in an effort to foster and now produce local film media in the Islands. NEWS 2

7 SUPPORTS OHINA For our upcoming 2018 Short Film Showcase, the Hawai i Tourism Authority has awarded Ohina a $25,000 Community Enrichment Program grant, recognizing the festival as providing a unique, authentic, and highly valued visitor experience and one that represents an important cultural activity developed by Hawai i s community, for Hawai i s community. The Hawai i Tourism Authority annually celebrates a handful of events and experiences each year with the Community Enrichment Program title, designating that which provides cultural significance to the understanding and enjoyment of the Hawaiian Islands. Funding from HTA helps to expand community-based programs to enrich visitor and resident interactions and economic benefits. Ohina is honored to be a 2018 recipient of this prestigious grant but we need your help to continue the momentum that HTA has created for Ohina. Ohina is honored to be selected as an HTA Community Enrichment Program grant recipient, joining important annual cultural events such as: Hawai i Book & Music Festival Annual 'Ukulele Festival POW! 8 The Ohina Short Film Showcase and the HAWAI I International Film Festival are joining forces to cultivate, support, and promote local filmmakers and story tellers. Recognizing that both festivals have overlapping goals and values for Hawai i s creative community, the two organizations realize that coming together will only allow for stronger growth and impact for local resourches and talent. Ohina and HIFF are excited for the coming collaborations in the near future and look forward to supporting each other as we push the local industry forward, both at home as well as globally. NEWS 5

10 OUR BIGGEST YEAR YET! We re back at the historic Hawai i Theatre for an evening of incredible independent films before hosting a full weekend of filmmaker workshops with our Ohina special guests. Kicking off this year back on Lāna i, we arrive at the end of August for a condensed screening at their Fifth Friday celebration with screenings held outside outside at Dole Park Friday evening and in the Hale Keaka Theater Saturday morning. Midway through the month, we re expecting to take the showcase to Maui for its first time with a screening at MACC. AUGUST 31 - Lāna'i - Hale Keaka Theater / Dole Park (TBD) SEPTEMBER 7 - O'ahu - Historic Hawai i Theatre SEPTEMBER 21 - Maui - MACC (TBD) - NEW!!! SEPTEMBER 28 - Hawai i Island - Palace Theater SEPTEMBER 29 - Hawai i Island - Kahilu Theatre - NEW!!! Finally, we're wrapping up the month-long festival back on the Big Island at the Palace Theater in Hilo and a brand new screening at the Kahuli Theatre in Waimea! We are continuing our outreach to hopefully get to Moloka i and Kaua i soon to round out the island-wide exposure. ABOUT 7

11 ABOUT OHINA Since 1999, the Ohina Short Film Showcase is Hawai i s largest annual short film festival dedicated to gathering and presenting original works by students, amateurs, and professional filmmakers. Q & A: MARVEL'S BLACK PANTHER SCREENWRITER JOE ROBERT COLE September 2, 2017 Total Reach: 30,000+ Emmy-nominated screenwriter Joe Robert Cole joined the Ohina team with a special Q&A for a packed house of writers, filmmakers, and film enthusiasts at the Surfjack. In a casual talk story format, Joe shared experiences working in the film industry and approaches for aspiring creatives to break into Hollywood. The talk was followed by a meet-and-greet with Joe. OHINA ON HAWAI I ISLAND September 15, 2017 Total Reach: 15,000+ Ohina presented a selection of films from the O ahu showcase at the Palace Theater in Hilo, with a special Q&A session with some of the filmmakers following the screening. OHINA ON LĀNA I September 29, 2017 Total Reach: 15,000+ In partnership with the Lāna i Chamber of Commerce and Fifth Friday Lāna i, Ohina presented a selection of films from the O ahu showcase at the recently renovated Hale Keaka (Lāna i Theatre) as well as on a large outdoor screen in the center of town in Dole Park. OFFICIAL SHOWCASE AT THE HAWAI'I THEATRE September 2, 2016 Attendance: ~1,500 Digital Reach: ~50,000 In 2016, Ohina moved from our former home in the Doris Duke Theatre at the Honolulu Museum of Art to the historic Hawai i Theatre in the vibrant arts district of Chinatown/downtown Honolulu. Some of the islands top film professionals were among our judges, including a special guest: Marvel Studios Executive Producer Nate Moore of Captain America: Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War and the upcoming Black Panther. Q & A WITH MARVEL EXECUTIVE PRODUCER NATE MOORE September 3, 2016 Attendance: ~200 Digital Reach: ~30,000 Marvel Executive Producer Nate Moore joined the Ohina team with a special Q&A for a packed house of writers, filmmakers, and film enthusiasts at Bar 35. In a casual talk story format, Nate shared behind-the-scenes experiences working in the film industry and approaches for aspiring creatives to break into Hollywood. The talk was followed by a meet-and-greet with Nate and prize giveaways. OHINA ON LĀNA I September 20, 2016 Attendance: ~500 Digital Reach: ~15,000 In partnership with the Lāna i Chamber of Commerce and Fifth Friday Lāna i, Ohina presented a selection of films from the O ahu showcase, which included four new short films written, directed, and produced by Lāna i filmmakers. 12 BRIDGING THE GAP BETWEEN HOLLYWOOD AND HAWAI I 2018 'OHINA GUEST SPOTLIGHT Dana Ledoux Miller was writer/producer on ABC s Designated Survivor starring Kiefer Sutherland, previously a story editor for the awardwinning television series Narcos, Blood & Oil, and The Newsroom, where she worked alongside Aaron Sorkin. A graduate of the Academy for Creative Media at the University of Hawai i at Mānoa, she lives in Los Angeles 'OHINA GUEST SPOTLIGHT Joe Robert Cole is a writer/producer/director who enjoys crafting smart, rich character journeys as well as creating tentpole, worldbuilding films and television. Joe recently cowrote Marvel s Black Panther with filmmaker Ryan Coogler. Prior to that, Joe was an Emmy-nominated producer/writer on the award-winning limited series American Crime Story: The People Vs. OJ Simpson for FX. For Lionsgate, he wrote and will direct Revoc, a grounded sci-fi alien thriller with Mandeville Films producing 'OHINA GUEST SPOTLIGHT Nate Moore is the Vice President of Development and Production at Marvel Studios, in the decision-making process for finding filmmakers, selecting cast and crew, overseeing storyboards, screenplay, production design, visual effects, licensing, marketing, and merchandising for Marvel properties. He was a co-producer for Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and executive producer for Captain America: Civil War and the upcoming Black Panther. ABOUT 9

13 THE OHINA TEAM EXECUTIVE TEAM Executive Director Gerard Elmore is an Emmy-nominated writer, editor, producer, and director with over 15 years of experience - creating independent films that have been nationally distributed and music videos that have aired on CMT and FUSE TV, coordinating Discovery Channel specials for Shark Week as a producer, and working as a commercial director on award-winning spots for clients including Hilton, Time Warner, McDonald s, and First Hawaiian Bank. He is also a lecturer at UH s Academy for Creative Media. Managing Director Darrin Kaneshiro is a freelance film producer and production expert, formerly executive producer at Shooters Film Production, involved in production at McHale Video Film, and McMahon & McMahon. He s a 20-year veteran of Hawai i s film and television industries. Creative Director Erik Ries is the creative director of brandhawaii, an experiential ideation agency that generates brand impact through strategic storytelling. He is an award-winning indepedent entertainment advertiser who has worked with such Hollywood studios as Disney, Marvel Studios, Warner Bros, Lion's Gate Films, Sony Entertainment, Netflix, A24 and many more over the last twenty years. Editorial Director James Charisma is editorin-chief of the award-winning Abstract Magazine, contributing editor for HONOLULU Magazine, and creative director of Charisma Industries, a creative company. He is a regular arts and entertainment contributor for Playboy, VICE, Complex, Collider, Paste, Hi-Fructose, Hyperallergic, Thrillist, and other publications. Education Director Brian Watanabe is an award-winning copywriter and creative director of the media agency 26 Keys Creative, a screenwriting instructor at Pacific New Media Outreach College, and has developed scripts for production companies at Fox and Sony. His screenplay, The Rogues Gallery, became the cult film Operation: Endgame, starring Ellen Barkin, Maggie Q, and Zach Galifianakis. Grants Director Donna Blanchard is the Managing Director of Kumu Kahua Theatre, Consulting Director of The ARTS at Marks Garage and host of Backstage with Donna Blanchard. She's an accomplished nonprofit and for-profit business development professional with more than 20 years experience in business rescue, management and alignment for strong stability and growth. Public Relations Director Susan Wright is a publicist with 20 years of experience specializing in the entertainment industry, has directed campaigns for the home media distribution group at Paramount Pictures and studio partners CBS, Comedy Central, DreamWorks Animation, MTV and PBS. BOARD OF DIRECTORS Mericia Elmore is the executive director of the SAG-AFTRA Hawai i Local and a practicing attorney in the State of Hawai i, with decades of experience in the entertainment industry, nonprofits, publishing, and advertising. Matt Heim is the Chief Operating Brother of the HONBLUE print family of companies: Electric Pencil, JETGraphics, Zoombis, and Brue Bar. A lifelong entrepreneur, he is a strong supporter of Hawai i s local design and business communities. Jason Suapaia is one of the original founders of the Ohina Short Film Showcase in 1999, and a 22- year veteran of the Hawai i video production and advertising industries with experience in producing a variety of digital media content for local, national, and international markets. He is the vice president of creative services for PBS Hawai i. Jason Cutinella is the founder and CEO of the award-winning publishing company Nella Media Group. With more than 15 years of experience in media, marketing, and brand development including roles with McCann Erickson Worldwide and Sony Music International, Jason is a visionary who pushes the boundaries of innovation in today s media market.
