3 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE BARBARA KINNEY ulton Street provided some great music at our May 21st session. A good crowd enjoyed them right to the last minute. A 7th grader who plays a clarinet with passion and skill, is our chosen candidate for Jazz camp this summer. John Soulis told us about him. His name is Samuel Vu and his mother wrote us a thank you which states in part Samuel loves traditional jazz. Thank you for giving him the opportunity of a lifetime. On June 25 we welcome Creole Jazz Kings. You won t want to miss this great group of musicians! Barbara Kinney, President - IN MEMORIAM - Donna King One of our longest time members, Donna King, died April 20th. She was the pretty older lady always seated at the first round table to the left as we enter the Elks Hall for music every session. She and her late partner, Robert Page, got around to many places for OKOM and were even honored by being selected as King and Queen for resno s annual Mardi Gras Bash not too many years ago. She was an active supporter of SBTJS serving one term as Vice President and becoming a Life Member in 1992 and will be remembered for her faithful attendance and her gracious friendship to many. She is survived by one son, four grandchildren and six great-grands. The Wind, the Wind The wind, the wind, the wind. I listen to the wind play my song, just like the Dixieland band. The notes just seem to string along, within my fantasy. The heavens above within our sky, could never ask for more. It helps the mind to define, though this music has no score. It is a song the wind did seek, while my song blows with delight. So now you know of my fantasy, that travels throughout the world. I hear the wind as my band, playing my song, without the words. 7 HEY, JAZZ ANS and PROMOTERS!! Here is an that Mal and Barbara received from the mother of the youngster, Samuel Wu, a remont middle school clarinetist, whom we are giving the youth scholarship this.year to Youth Jazz Camp. We ve had thank you letters from the recipients themselves, but this eloquent note from a parent is a first. Hello Mal and Barbara, I am Tammy, Samuel s mom. Samuel is the recipient of the South Bay Traditional Jazz Society scholarship this year to attend a week jazz camp in Sacramento. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the Society. Both my husband and I have no musical background to help Samuel pursue his interest in music in general and jazz in particular. Since Samuel joined the Jazzinators led by Mr. and Mrs. Soulis, not only his ability to play but also to appreciate music is blossoming. He always loved jazz music but recently he said that he likes traditional jazz better. Receiving the scholarship from South Bay Jazz Society this year to go to camp will sharpen his skill, increase his confidence and independence. Thank you for giving him the opportunity of a lifetime.
