3 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE RAFFLE RAMBLIN S December was a good month for the Raffle Committee! We would very much like to thank you all, for we made over $100. from your generous ticket purchases. We know that we keep harping on it, but you DO know that your ticket purchases go towards paying for at least one month's band. As with everything else these days, the price for sponsoring a band has gone up. The Raffle Committe urges you to keep purchasing raffle tickets and helping out. Speaking of helping out, we are running very low on CDs. The committee relies on your donations, we don't want to have to give up offering them. Please take a moment to review your CD collection, and see if there aren't some there that you don't listen to anymore. You know someone else might just enjoy your share! The Raffle Committee thanks you in advance for your consideration in this matter. Gifts of wine, or other music-related articles are also gratefully accepted. Just drop off your donations at the Raffle Table. 4 BAND HELPS FIRE VICTIMS Musicians send instruments to Wine Country. The Los Trancos Woods Community Marching Band, a colorful, freewheeling group based in Portola Valley, is collecting instruments to give to Santa Rosa musicians who lost theirs in the Wine Country fires. Patter Hatfield, the band's drummer, said he awoke early one day after the October fires with the idea to donate a cello he never learned to play and other instruments to musicians in Santa Rosa. "I started thinking, what if I had saved up all my money and got the TV I wanted and it went up in smoke in a few seconds?" Hatfield said about his desire to help the North Bay fire victims. Hatfield told a former classmate, who now lives in the North Bay, about his idea and she connected him with the manager of the Santa Rosa Youth Orchestra, which is associated with the Santa Rosa Symphony. Hatfield said they loaded up the back of the manager's van with banjos, tubas, guitars, amplifiers, trombones, clarinets, cellos, and many other instruments. He said he lost count of how many instruments were donated. Hatfield said people are still giving him band instruments for fire victims and he will be scheduling another donation to the youth orchestra. Once the orchestra tells him it has enough instruments, he said he will look to make donations to Southern California musicians affected by the fires there. The Los Trancos Woods Community Marching Band, a playful group that has a juggler, baton twirler and doesn't require practicing, was started in the Los Trancos neighborhood of Portola Valley in The band performs multiple times a month, including the December 16th Yuletide Concert at Lytton Plaza in Palo Alto. band member Jim Harvey at ltwcmb@jimharvey.org to find out how to donate instruments. Palo Alto Daily Post Editor's note: This article appeared in the Daily Post on January 2. We applaud the efforts of Mr. Hatfield and the Los Trancos Community Marching Band, to help out fellow musicians. Imagine how devastating it is to lose everything in a fire, much less losing precious musical instruments! We encourage our members to consider donating any instruments you may have, that you are not currently playing. The public schools and the community bands in the fire areas could use our help. 4 SAN FRANCISCO JAZZ a book review Bay Area writer and jazz aficionado Medea Isphording Bern has uncovered stories and images that begin to unveil the multi-faceted history of the San Francisco jazz scene. From the gritty Barbary Coast to the glittery SFJAZZ, a century of jazz history is explored. Lu Watters' and Turk Murphy's immense contributions to Bay Area jazz feature prominently. The book includes interviews with individual performers and club owners, and taps sources such as the San Francisco Traditional Jazz Foundation and the Stanford Archive of Recorded Sound. It outlines the jazz that San Franciscans have grooved to and incubated, describing scores of jazz acts, hot and cool, raucous and contemplative. The author describes the happenings in such venues as Earthquake McGoon's, Black Hawk, and Keystone Korner, and halls like The Primalon Ballroom and The Great American Music Hall. Look for San Francisco Jazz on Amazon, or at a bookstore near you. BE A VOLUNTEER Thank You, Jack Ford! We owe a big South Bay thank you to Jack Ford, who has diligently performed the task of Treasurer for the past three years. Jack is that first friendly face that you saw when you entered each Sunday. He happily took your money, but behind-the-scenes, he wrote all the checks, balanced the checkbook, and wrote a monthly report for the Board Meetings. He did it with style and grace, and we thank him for his time on the Executive Board. He's assured us he will still be around to announce the Door Prizes at our monthly meetings. Well done and Thanks Jack!
