3 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE BARBARA KINNEY What a kick! We enjoyed another trombone duet that joined our parasolers on the dance floor. What fun! This time the Bone players were Rich Newcomb and Jack Gerken. Keith Baltz and his band gave us a good musical afternoon and it was a warm one! Good to have some cool jazz. Once again we had huge Jams Sets - wonderful musicians kept in line by our Marine cornetist, Dick Williams. A great musical afternoon. In August we will enjoy Midnight Rose who has added pianist Bonnie Otto to their line up, so be prepared for another cool jazz afternoon. Barbara Kinney THE SPECIAL IS MUSIC There s always special music, as we dance upon the floor. This is a kind of magic, that so many do adore. This is a love that is our star, that goes beyond each ear. Perhaps it tells who we are, and what we want to hear. It s music that belongs to me, for it really fills my heart. This is a happiness that must be, though it really is a work of art. This is music that is never rare, whenever within one s view. Also music we will not share, cause it s treasure, is for me and you, Yes, there s always special music, as we dance upon the floor. This is a kind of magic, that so many do adore. By Joseph Templett BBQ Party Plan for August!! Let s have lunch together! For our August session on the 24th with Midnight Rose Jazz Band the Elks have agreed to provide us with a barbecue!! 5 MAMMOTH JAZZ festival The Mammoth Jazz Festival has gone on successfully with new management after 25 years having been run by Flossy and Ken Coulter. The new festival management team are Kris Olsen and Cathleen Calderon. They made necessary changes to enable the festival to continue with 12% less people attending in the last three years. Some of the cut backs or changes to save money were the following: * We wore wrist bands of different colors as entrance passes, instead of expensive badges. * Wooden nickels (worth $1.00) for drinks and food in the main venue were eliminated. Cash and credit cards accepted. * Fewer venues only 7 with Whisky Creek Bar and Big top being eliminated. * 20% cut in number of bands- There were 12 bands. These are the bands at the festival: Bill Allred s Classic Jazz Band, Cornet Chop Suey, Blue Street, Gator Nation (formerly Gator Beat) High Street, Midiri Brothers, Tom Hook, Yve Evans and Company, Side Street Strutters, Tom Rigney and Flambeau, and the Professors who taught the High Sierra Youth Jazz Camp. CD 2 - Over the Waves; Bugle Boy March; Doctor Jazz ; Red Wing; Sensation Rag; Corrine, Corrina ; Ice Cream º; When the Saints Go Marching Inº; Chimes Blues; Muskrat Ramble; Finale/Basin Street Blues*. (Note: Chimes Blues actually precedes the Saints on the CD itself.) Playing time: 50 mins. 59 secs. Recorded at Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio, on Mar. 3, Personnel: George Lewis, clarinet, leader, speaker*; Avery Kid Howard, trumpet, vocalº; Jim Robinson, trombone; Lawrence Marrero, banjo, bass drum**; Alton Purnell, piano, vocal ; Alcide Slow Drag Pavageau, string bass; Joe Watkins, drums, vocal. departure. And listening to these recordings, one can easily see By now the George Lewis story is fairly well known, especially why that would be so. For sheer excitement the Lewis band is among those who are fans of traditional jazz, particularly that high on the scale one would be hard pressed to find a hotter of the New Orleans style. He was unknown outside of New band. At the time of this recording, unfortunately Kid Howard Orleans until the early 1940 s when he recorded with Bunk was having lip problems and hence cannot play with his usual Johnson and later appeared with him at an engagement at the verve. Even so, his playing is more than adequate, and the Stuyvesant Casino, New York, in 1945, by which time the others are all in top form. traditional jazz revival was underway. While in New York the Since this is a live recording, not done under optimum Johnson/Lewis band recorded for the major labels Victor and conditions, there are a few minor problems, such as sound Decca, further disseminating their jazz and establishing their balance being a little off, starts missing a note or two, and the names. rather disconcerting (to me) abrupt ending of some tracks, Returning to New Orleans, the Lewis band, minus Johnson probably to eliminate audience reaction. (But those tracks where but with other trumpet players substituting, stayed together we are permitted to hear the response convincingly demonstrate and was featured in the June 6, 1950 issue of Look magazine, just how well the band was being received.) which further burnished the band s reputation. Touring While many fans of this type of jazz may already have the followed, and the concert contained on these two discs was Storyville double CD issue or the Disc Jockey double LP issue recorded during one of these tours, less than a decade after the of this concert, this current CD issue, part of Upbeat s Lewis triumphant New York debut. By this time Lewis was one of reissue program, has the benefit of the digital transfers. Those the leading exponents, if not the leading one, of the New Orleans new to Lewis could hardly have a better introduction. And all branch of the revival. of us who are contemporaries of those who were in the audience This recording makes clear why Lewis occupied such a that night can sit back and indulge in some nostalgia for some position. The band is a seven-piece juggernaut, barreling through hour and three quarters. Lewis himself said that his was the all of the up-tempo pieces and steeping the slower-paced blues last of the real New Orleans jazz bands, and that was no idle pieces in sentiment, not sentimentalism or bathos. The former claim. are exemplified in Mama Don t low where the audience roars This double CD can probably be purchased in the U.S. at its approval, or Ice Cream where again the audience responds Jazzbymail, which stocks Upbeat releases, at loudly, undoubtedly to Jim Robinson s dancing around the stage or at the Upbeat website, waving his white handkerchief in their direction, making Joe which provides for ordering by mail if one Watkins four-bar tag at the end almost obligatory. Even on a clicks on New Releases. blues like Corrine, Corrina, we hear Joe Watkins exhorting Jim Robinson to Slide, Jim, Slide! and George Lewis to Blow, George, Blow! as they solo. And the audience responds in kind to all of this exuberance on the stand. The audience, somewhat remarkable by today s standards, is a young, white one, being composed of college students from Ohio State. (As such, they rather dutifully clap time on the beat; even when led initially by one of the musicians to clap on the off-beat, as soon as he stops clapping to play, they drift back to on the beat!) But they certainly do respond to the music, even though there is nary a guitar in sight. At the time of this concert, most of the tunes in the play lists of these two CD s were fresh. Even When the Saints Go Marching In had not yet become the war horse it was later to become. And many of the tunes were to become standards in the revivalist band s repertoires. Indeed many of the bands in the U.K. (in particular Ken Colyer s), Europe, and even Japan were to take the Lewis band as a template or at least point of 6

7 We Send a Talented Clarinetist to Jazz Camp Rebekah Rodrigues whom we ve heard when Dixie Dominus played for us, and also as a jammer, was chosen by the Board to get our support to go to jazz camp at Mammoth Lake in July in conjunction with that festival. As you read in the review of that festival, she made a big impression there. She knows how to write prompt, gracious thank you letters, too. Rebekah is 17 and will be a senior at Fremont Christian High School this fall through a home schooling program She also attends band classes there daily. She hasn t chosen a college to go to yet but she hopes to enter a music studies program with a clarinet performance major. We should expect to see her as a jammer more often in the next year.
