Stock and other securities can also be donated. Is it possible that jazz festivals could go the way of the passenger pigeon and the pterodactyl? Three California festivals recently closed for lack of support (Orange County, L.A. and San Clemente). With the help and support of jazz fans that won t happen in San Diego. Some of you remember when the Festival started in conjunction with the Holiday Football Bowl. Do you remember when a room was set up for Breakfast at Brennan s with bands like the Dixie Cats from Los Angeles supplying the music? Paul Reid was the piano player. (He is now the piano player with Cornet Chop Suey, appearing at the Festival this year.) 3 On Tap... Continued from page 1 becoming a real festival favorite. Nannette & Her Hotsy Totsy Boys is billed as a Roaring 20s Review. Nannette and her musicians also from the Inland Empire of Southern California describe their act as The Audience Becomes a Part of the Show! Experience the enchantment of the Jazz Age. Dance, swoon, and laugh with our cabaret-style show. Returning in 2012, after several years absence, we are pleased to welcome back the Black Swan Classic Jazz Band with Marilyn Keller (Portland, OR). To quote its website: Black Swan is a versatile group with the ability to tastefully and softly caress an intimate room, fire up a large hall and keep the dancers cutting a rug. Black Swan delights in entertaining as well as educating its audiences with authentic renditions of the music of noteworthy early jazz figures such as Jelly Roll Morton, Louis Armstrong, King Oliver, Duke Ellington, Fletcher Henderson, Hoagy Carmichael, Fats Waller, Turk Murphy, Eubie Blake, Scott Joplin and others. You will hear a strong mix of music performed by few other bands, originals by members of Black Swan and many popular favorites you know and love. In addition to these outstanding traditional ensembles, AFCDJS has invited some of our patrons favorite traditional jazz groups to perform at Festival #33: Yerba Buena Stompers, Grand Dominion Jazz Band, Uptown Lowdown, Night Blooming Jazzmen, Titanic Jazz Band, Red Pepper Jazz Band and Dixie Express. Also returning in 2012: the Red Skunk Jipzee Swing Band, pianist Stephanie Trick, Chloe Feoranzo and the Mission Bay Preservationists. These young musicians caused a sensation at the 2011 Festival and we are delighted to feature them once again at this year s event. The Reynolds Brothers Rhythm Rascals, Tim Laughlin/Connie Jones and the New Orleans All-Stars, the Dave Bennett Quartet, Cornet Chop Suey, the High Society Jazz Band, Howie Nielson works with Dixie Do-Daz of North Carolina Throughout the year, Howie Nielson, the AFCDJS archivist, supplies sheet music to interested jazz bands from all over the United States and other countries as well and has done so for many years. He is especially proud of the youth bands that have gotten their start with music he has provided from our archives. Pictured below is Dixie Do-Daz from the First Flight Middle School of Kill Devil Hill, North Carolina. The music director, Gary Clark, not only helps keep the music alive with the young students at his school, but he is also a regular patron at our annual Festival where he not only enjoys the music Sue Palmer and her Motel Swing Orchestra, the Heliotrope Ragtime Orchestra, Carl Sonny Leyland and Katie Cavera are also favorites of the jazz lovers who attend the Thanksgiving Festival, and they are all returning in Patrons who desire an interactive experience at the Festival may bring an instrument to participate in the JazzSea Jams, organized by Dick Williams. In addition, all dancers are welcome at the Myers Dance Classes, instructed by Hal and Georgia Myers. AFCDJS invites you to join us for another exciting weekend of jazz, swing and related music (and dancing!) at our 33rd Annual San Diego but has participated in multiple Dick Williams jam sessions as well. Success stories like Gary s program are among the reasons Howie truly enjoys serving as our archivist. AFCDJS maintains over 2000 small combo and Dixie-style sheet music arrangements making music available to school and youth groups, and other community, church or professional musical organizations. An index of the tunes in our archives lists the arranger, number of pages, and instrument mix for each title. 6 Why I Like Being a Band Sponsor PAGE 6 By Jim McNaughton I really like the opportunity to hear my favorite traditional jazz bands over a five-day period. They are always at their best when performing at a large festival. The musicianship and arrangements are incredible. With seven venues going at the same time, it is difficult to make a choice about which one to attend. Sometimes seating is difficult, but if I sponsor a band I will have preferred seating in all of the venues. It is great to be in the front row. It will be easier to see my choices of past favorites and catch some of the new bands this year. If I choose to attend the sponsor reception, I might see people I have met at past Festivals. It is fun and informative to discuss jazz festivals, jazz cruises, bands and musicians with old and new friends. Musicians attend the reception. It is a great opportunity to tell them in person how much you enjoy their music. It is no surprise how much the musicians value your sponsorship. I can decide in advance if I want to be recognized by the band leader and the sign on the stage as well as having my name in the program. Or, I could choose to be an anonymous sponsor. For Festival #33 a new perk has been added sponsors will get free parking at the Town and Country. In addition, I will feel good about helping the Society preserve the music and continue the Festival and Jazz Camp. When I see the youth bands perform and visit the JazzSea Jam Sessions, I always have a new appreciation for the contribution AFCDJS makes to traditional jazz. I know I will get my money s worth for my contribution. Guess what, part of it is tax deductible. I have been a band sponsor for many years. If you are a sponsor I know you will recognize the many benefits that come from sponsorship. If this is new to you and you are interested, please contact me, Jim McNaughton, at or mmcnaughton@sbcglobal.net. Or, if you prefer, you may go to our website, which will give you information on how to become a sponsor. T&C Pet Policy The Town & Country Resort and Convention Center is currently reviewing its pet policy in designated lodging rooms. If you are coming to the Festival and need a pet-friendly hotel, check the Town and Country first. Jim McNaughton (r) with long-time Society supporter Cass Cacciatore SPRING (MAY) 2012 Dickenson... Continued from page 11 band in Chicago and later with Frankie Newton at Café Society in New York s Greenwich Village. A much soughtafter trombonist, Dickenson recorded with Albert Ammons on Commodore, with Mary Lou Williams on Asch, James P. Johnson and Sidney Bechet on Blue Note and with Art Hodes. In the 40s and 50s he played with Eddie Heywood, Ed Hall, Bobby Hackett and Red Allen as well as leading his own groups. He appeared at the Cannes Festival in Europe in 58 and was with Sammy Price in Begium. He stayed busy recording with Buck Clayton, Ruby Braff, Lester Young and Pee Wee Russell. He toured Europe with George Wein s All Stars in 61 and was with Eddie Condon in Asia and Australia in 64. In 1970 he joined the Yank Lawson/Bob Haggart World s Greatest Jazz Band. During the 70s he continued to lead small groups, making solo appearances and records and finally died in New York City in 1983 at the age of 78. Dickenson was one of the best loved and respected jazz musicians, and even in his late sixties and early seventies he was able to produce performances which mark him as one of the most distinctive voices in jazz history. Trombonist Benny Morton once described him as the Will Rogers of the Trombone. He said Dickenson gets musicians laughing when he plays, yet even with a touch of humor he says the most serious things. 11 Festival Profiles The Highly Versatile and Talented Clint Baker By Hal Smith The next time you attend a jazz festival, look for a young man wearing a cap who is making things happen on the bandstand. He may be in the front line playing trumpet, trombone or clarinet or possibly in the rhythm section on banjo, guitar, string bass, tuba or drums. Listen for an authoritative and authentic sound on whatever the man in the cap is playing, and you will have found CLINT BAKER. Clint became a genuine jazz wunderkind, almost as soon as he began playing jazz as a teenager in the 1980s. Over the years he has learned to play all the instruments that are usually heard in Traditional Jazz and has also become a much-respected bandleader. Though his favorite style of music is New Orleans Jazz, he is equally adept at playing San Francisco, Chicago, Kansas City and Harlem styles as well as Gypsy Jazz. During the past decade, Clint has worked with a variety of bands, playing a wide range of styles, including New Orleans Rascals of Osaka, Climax Jazz Band, Jim Cullum s Jazz Band, Hal Smith s Roadrunners, Tom Sharpsteen s Orlandos, Bill Bissonnette s International Jazz Band, Leon Oakley s Friends of Jazz Band, Reynolds Brothers Rhythm Rascals and the Black Diamond Blue Five. He also led Clint Baker s New Orleans Dickenson... Continued from back page Jazz Band (which still performs for special occasions). Clint s present-day musical activities are just as varied trumpet with the Grand Dominion Jazz Band; tuba with the Yerba Buena Stompers; string bass with Ray Skjelbred and his Cubs; guitar (and sometimes bass) with Le Jazz Hot. He leads the Café Borrone All-Stars at the establishment of the same name in Menlo Park, California and co-leads the New El Dorado Jazz Band. In both cases, he is able to play any instrument that is necessary for the performance. In addition to his busy performance schedule, Clint also lectures on jazz history and since 1997 he has been on the staff of the AFCDJS Adult Traditional Jazz Camp. Clint lives in San Bruno, California with his wife Alisa Clancy (a jazz radio host) and their two children. To borrow a phrase from Clint Baker himself, he is a full-service jazz musician multi-instrumentalist, bandleader, educator and historian. PAGE 12 Banjoist Ralph Diana of San Clemente is the leader and the everpopular Phil Kirk is on trumpet. Others in the group are Eric Rosenau, trombone; Jim Fiedler, clarinet; Robert Pinsker, piano; Stan Kling, tuba; and Kenny Powell, drums. SPRING (MAY) 2012 High Society July 15 The High Society Jazz Band will bring their special blend of Dixieland and swing music to the monthly concert series on Sunday, July 15. Since it was organized in 1980, HSJB has become one of Southern California s most popular jazz bands. The musicians skillfully combine the sounds of classic Dixieland, swing and older popular standards into an entertaining and very danceable presentation. Currently, the High Society band consists of Larry Okmin, clarinet and leader; Rick Evans, trumpet; Billy Hawkins, trombone; Jay Berman, piano and vocals; Joe Meza, bass; and John Hall, drums. We are truly fortunate to have the opportunity to hear such wonderful bands at our monthly concerts, especially in the historic Mississippi Room at the recently renovated, beautiful, and centrally located facility of the Lafayette Hotel. Come to every concert and bring your friends! JAZZ RAMBLER

CA They Called it Jazz Vic Dickenson was Distinctive Voice in Jazz (This is a reprint in a series of biographies of great traditional jazz musicians. The series started with the March/April 1991 issue and this article originally appeared in the September/October 1996 edition of the Jazz Rambler and was written by Rambler founding publisher and Board Member Len Levine.) By Len Levine Trombonist Vic Dickenson, in a career that spanned more than five decades, played and recorded some serious jazz, but he will perhaps be best remembered for his droll, mocking trombone style using the intrinsic humor of the slide trombone (and a full complement of mutes) to full artistic effect. Born in Xenia, Ohio in 1906, he began to pick out notes on an old organ in the parlor of his house. But PAGE 16 SPRING (MAY) 2012 he had his eye on the trombone his older brother was studying, and when his brother tired of his lessons, Vic had the trombone and never let it go. In high school he began to play in a school band and at 15, without any formal music training, he played his first paying job with the Elite Serenaders in Lebanon, Ohio. In 1922 the family moved to Columbus, and Vic and his brother Carlos, a saxophone player, began to job around Columbus. He worked local gigs with Roy Brown s band and then with Don Phillips and Leonard Gay in Madison, Wisc., where he taught himself to read music. In 1929 he joined Speed Webb and his Hollywood Band which included Teddy Wilson, Roy Eldridge and Roy s brother, Joe, on alto sax. continued on page 11 JAZZ RAMBLER
