1 ST. ANTHONY KINDERGARTEN READING LIST We encourage our students to read often during the summer. Frequent practice keeps emergent reading skills current. Each kindergarten student is required to read at least 3 of the books listed below. Please note that the reading level of the suggested books varies. If your child is already a reader, have him read a passage from the book aloud to see if it is a good fit. If he struggles with more than one or two words on a page, the book is probably too difficult. Most importantly, we ask that you continue to read aloud to your child. This remains one of the most valuable things that you can do to promote success in reading. Choosing good literature with engaging text and appealing illustrations is the best way to help your student develop listening skills, promote comprehension and build a rich vocabulary. We encourage you to share a good book with your child every day! 2 St. Anthony Summer Reading List 1 st - 3 rd The purpose of the Summer Reading Program is to encourage students to enjoy quality literature and to continue developing their independent reading and comprehension skills. Summer reading is an extremely important component of your child s transition from one grade to the next. We encourage you to have your child read as much as possible over the summer; however, each child is required to read at least 4-5 books. An assessment and/or activity will be given within the 1 st week of school. The teachers and staff recommend that the students either read the book to their parent or that the parents become familiar with the book to review it with the child after they have read it. Both Guided Reading and Developmental Reading Assessment levels have been provided to help select various levels texts within each grade. The students also have the option of typing the book report in a Power Point or Prezi presentation, but the format should be the same. You will take Scholastic tests on the other two selections. Please use the following book report format: Cover The cover page must include the title and author of the book. Page One- Main Characters Please write a detailed description of the main characters in your book. Use paragraph form. Please tell me, not only about their appearance, but also about their personality characteristics. Setting Please state in paragraph form where and when the story takes place. Is it in a specific city, state or country? Is it set in the past, present or future? Page Two Summary- Please compose a short summary of the plot of the book. This summary will include only the important events in the book. What is the main action in the book? Who does it involve? What problem or problems are the characters trying to solve? How do they solve them? Page Three-Opinion - Please give your opinion of the story. Was it interesting? What did you like or dislike about the book? Would you recommend the book to other students in the class? Would you read other books by the same author?
