3 First Grade Summer Reading 2017 Summer is no time to stop reading! Reading for just a few minutes every day can maintain the skills learned at school to be ready for the next grade level. But summer is a time for fun and relaxation too! So, we offer a fun way to complete the summer reading assignment for first grade. Each student will need to complete both calendars and the Bingo sheet. 1) Calendars- During July and August read for pleasure and check off the calendar each day when you read for 20 minutes or more. Count everything you read including books, magazines, cereal boxes, menus, etc Students may need their parents help to complete this assignment and to read aloud to their children. You need to have 40 boxes checked off! Calendars are attached. 2) BINGO Board- Attached, you will find a Summer Reading Bingo Board. The board is filled with different ideas to fill those warm summer days! You need to complete one row. Will you go up and down? Across or diagonal? Can you fill in more than one row? Can you fill in the whole board? Color in each box with a yellow or orange crayon when you complete it. Be creative with your reading, writing, drawing, painting, and even cooking! Both the BINGO board and the Calendars are due on the first day of school. Make sure you have plenty of good books! 6 Summer reading is essential for a successful school experience. Learning to read takes practice. Books can be read individually or with assistance. At this age, it is important to encourage independent reading. It is also helpful to keep a log or journal of books read during the summer. 7 Summer Reading for 2 nd Grade The summer is a great time to relax and read a lot of boos. Before starting 2 nd grade you are required to read at least 10 books. This means who must read 10 or more books before September. Please keep track of the books you read on the book log below. This will be collected on the 1 st day of school. You must also fill in and complete the book tri-fold. On the front you will write the title, author and your name along with an illustration. You will also draw pictures of the main characters and write their names. You will draw pictures to represent the setting(s). The inside of the tri-fold is a sequence of events. You will write what happens in the beginning, middle and end of the story. You will also draw a picture to illustrate. This will be collected on the first day of school and presented to the class! 1. 10 Third Grade Summer Reading Work Hooray! You have made it through second grade. Now it s time to get ready for third grade! The most important thing to do this summer is to read, and of course, have fun! Read storybooks as well as chapter books. Required reading: 1) You will have to read two chapter books over the summer. The first required book is Big Bad Detective Agency by Bruce Hale. The other book you can choose from the list. 2) For each book, as you read, fill out a story map graphic organizer. 3) For each book, after you read, complete a book activity. You need to complete two activities, one for each required book. Choose the activities from the list. All activities need to be completed on looseleaf with a proper heading.** Use example below: Student Name Teacher s Name Date Summer Reading
11 Book Activity List 1) Write a letter to the author. Let him/her know that you read the book by describing parts that you particularly enjoyed. 2) Interview a character. Choose a character from the book. Write five questions you would want to ask the character. Be sure to ask questions that are related to the book. (Do not ask questions such as What is your favorite color?) 3) Describe (write) the book s original ending, and then write a new one. Be detailed. Your ending should have eight or more sentences. 4) Write a journal entry. Pretend you are one of the characters. Write eight or more sentences describing a day in your life. ***Challenge yourself! Try one of the following ideas: Read more than two chapter books. Check out your town library to see if there are summer reading clubs. Log your minutes with the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge. 18 5 TH Grade Summer Reading All students are required to read From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler by e.l. konigsburg. Students will be tested on their understanding of the book during the first week of school. You must read this book! Students are required to read two other books listed. Choose the book you like the best and complete one of the following projects. (You may not use the required book for this part.) Option 1- Videotape or use a movie maker to act out the scene from your book. Use specific details from the book. Option 2-Create a ten to fifteen slide Power Point presentation to persuade your friends to read your book. Include a summary, title, and author. Option 3- Write a one page book summary of the novel from one character's point of view. Option 4- Write a persuasive essay explaining why the book you read should or should not be on the summer reading list. Give details to support your opinion. Don't forget to bring your project to school with you on the first day of 5 th grade. 20 OLH Prep Summer Reading Work The list of summer reading books below has been carefully chosen by your Prep ELA teachers. Prep 6-8 students should read the books listed for their grade level and complete the necessary written assignments by the first day of school in September. Prep 6 Reading work- All Prep 6 students must read three books this summer: one ELA book, one Religion book, and one Classic book. Assessments will be given on all three books in September. Written work- 1) For all three books, you must complete a reading log sheet. 2) Complete one of the assignments below for either Crash or Rules. 3) Be prepared to discuss your summer reading books in September. 4) Our writing tasks in September will be based on your summer reading so be ready. 5) First extra credit opportunity: bring in a photo of you reading somewhere this summer. Complete one of the following ideas for your required book (Rules or Crash): Book Talk-Create a short video book talk. Share what you liked about the book as well as information about characters, setting, plot elements, and themes (2-3 minutes max). Bring in on a flash drive. This is a great way to break the ice at the start of the year and show your classmates how you ve grown over the summer. Fast Forward- Predict what two of the main characters will be doing ten years after the book ends. (Minimum of 150 words typed or written on looseleaf in cursive.) Diary- Compose at least three journal entries from the point of view of a character from the book. (Minimum of 150 words typed or written on looseleaf in cursive.)

Written work- For the ELA book, write a persuasive letter that encourages a friend to read this book. Your letter should be at least five paragraphs in length, and it must be in friendly letter format. Include at least seven text details, and be sure the setting, plot, and characters are fully described. It may be typed or handwritten. For the Religion book, record information about your five favorite stories from each gospel on index cards. Be sure to cite each story by writing down the gospel, chapter, and verses for each. (Example: Luke 1: 1-10) (Ten index cards in all.) For the Classic book- Complete a reading log sheet. See last page of the Prep 7 reading section for the log. Recommended work- Take notes as you read on index cards or post-its of key plot elements (setting, characters, etc.) and your favorite parts or interesting points. Written work- For the ELA book- Annotate your book. See the annotation tips sheet for information and examples. Students will be graded on how well they annotate their book. Each chapter should have three to five notes/comments. For the Religion book-be prepared to discuss in class. Take notes as you read on index cards of your ten favorite parts, interesting points, or stories. Each index card should include a citation, information on what you read, and why you found it interesting. For the Classic book, write a persuasive letter that encourages a friend to read this book. Your letter should be at least five paragraphs in length, and it must be in friendly letter format. It must include at least eight text details. Recommended work- Take notes as you read on index cards or post-its of your favorite parts, interesting points, etc. ELA book Nothing but the Truth by Avi Religion book New Testament- Read the Acts of the Apostles. 26 Annotation Sheet for Prep 8 Work and for Prep 7/8 Teacher s Challenge Books Do the following as you read: Before: Look at the front and back covers of the text. Try to learn more about the author. Think about the title and/or subtitle. Look at how the text is organized on the page and how the overall book is organized. During: In the text, use symbols like the ones above to mark key points, etc. In the margins, make comments on what you read. (Summarize, Analyze, Question, Predict, Formulate) After: Think about what you read.
