1 For Students Entering Kindergarten Students entering Kindergarten are asked to read with someone (Mom, Dad, sister, brother, etc.) each day for 20 minutes. The list of books from which to choose includes: Peas by Keith Baker Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do You See? By Bill Martin Jr., and Eric Carle The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein If You Take a Mouse to School by Laura Numeroff and Felicia Bond Kindergarten Rocks by Katie Davis My Five Senses by Aliki No, David! by David Shannon Roosters Off to See the World by Eric Carle What Do You Do with a Tail Like This? by Steve Jenkins and Robin Page Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak Each day, as the child reads with someone, the attached chart can be completed so that the child can keep track of all the reading s/he has done. This chart should be turned into the teacher on August 10, 2016.

Books may be of the student s choosing (at current reading level), as long as he or she is reading at least 20 to 30 minutes each day. Reading may be either assisted or independent, please mark the log accordingly. I recommend your child choose a variety of genres of books; expository, literary, historical fiction, fantasy. After reading, please discuss the book and ask questions, keep them thinking about the book -try writing one or two sentences about the book, the characters, or what they remember reading. 5 Please keep a reading log of the time you spend reading this summer. Try to spend at least 30 minutes a day reading. It can be broken into 2, 15 minute sitting times. Then enter your information in your reading log. Some of the books which are read may be tested on in the fall if they are AR books. Be prepared to turn your log in the first week of school. Try to choose books you enjoy and find interesting. They may be fiction or non-fiction. These worksheets should be submitted to your teacher on August 10, Students may also be given the chance to take an AR test for these books when they return to school. 9 For Students Entering Fourth Grade Student responsibilities for summer reading include the following: Each student in grade four will compose a Book Response Essay for one of the following titles that summarizes the story. The summary must detail major events in the novel. The student must provide a hard copy of their work on the first day of school, August 10, The essay should be no less than 400 words in length, must be typed in 12-point font, Times New Roman, and must be double-spaced. Failure to follow directions will result in a failing grade. Additionally, each student will also be given an AR test on each book read when they return to school as the second part of their grade for summer reading. The book selection that will be read this summer is: Hachiko Waits by Leslea Newman Students may then choose one of the following two titles: Will You Sign Here, John Hancock? by Jean Fritz Sojourner Truth Ain t I a Woman? by Fred and Patricia C. McKissack

10 For Students Entering Fifth Grade Student responsibilities for summer reading include the following: Each student in grade five will compose a Book Response Essay for one of the following titles that summarizes the story. The summary must detail major events in the novel. The student must provide a hard copy of their work on the first day of school, August 10, The essay should be no less than 400 words in length, must be typed in 12-point font, Times New Roman, and must be double-spaced. Failure to follow directions will result in a failing grade. Additionally, each student will also be given an AR test on both books when they return to school as the second part of their grade for summer reading. The book selections that will be read this summer are: The Toothpaste Millionaire by Jean Merrill Bread and Roses, Too by Katherine Paterson

11 For Students Entering Sixth Grade Students entering Sixth Grade are asked to read two books over the summer and prepare to take the AR test, as well as a written response quiz upon returning to school in August. The grades for these assessments will be a part of the student s first quarter reading grades. Students should read the following books: Flush by Carl Hiaasen Wonder by RJ Palacio

12 For Students Entering Seventh Grade Students entering Seventh Grade are asked to read two books over the summer and prepare to take the AR test, as well as a written response quiz upon returning to school in August. The grades for these assessments will be a part of the student s first quarter reading grades.
