1 Catch the Reading Habit Dear Parents: On June 22nd the hectic pace of the school year will give way to the less structured, more relaxed days of summer...a great time to read for pleasure while practicing the reading skills taught during the school year. Research shows a correlation between recreational reading at home and success at school. Voluntary reading is linked with high levels of reading achievement and increased comprehension and vocabulary development. This year we are sending home a summer calendar. The books that you read are up to you and your child. We are suggesting that students read or be read to for a minimum time of 15 minutes per day on at least 4 days each week. A parent should initial the calendar each day the 15 minute goal is met. The initialed calendar should be returned during the first week of school and your child will receive a free book. Another idea is to visit the John Curtis Library. Contact Mrs. Campbell in the children s room for more information on the summer reading program. There will be many fun activities that go on during the summer at the library. The book list that we are sending home offers suggestions of books and excellent web sites you and your child might enjoy. Our mutual goal is to have children who not only read, but who choose to read. Enjoy your summer and thanks in advance for your support! Let your children hear you discuss your reaction to books. Ask your child if the experience in the book is the same or different from experiences they have had. Ask Questions Relate the experience in the book to the experiences of your child before reading. Ask your child to predict what might happen. Ask your child to clarify a word meaning by asking questions such as What is it like? or What are some examples? PAGE 1
