1 CHECK IT OUT read watch listen research create SUMMER 2014 experience The Myth of Summer Reading Rush Each new year, about two weeks into January, the massive binder of Collaborative Summer Reading plans for babies, children, tweens, teens, young adults, new adults, and seniors is mailed to the library and kickstarts the months long process of fundraising, collaborating, coordinating and marketing the library s Summer Reading Program. As the clock ticks down to the big day the first official day of Summer Reading our nerves get the better of us and the desire to make a memorable summer for community students, caretakers and families makes June from August seem a bit hectic. But here s the professional secret that alludes even veteran library staff when Summer Reading is in its peak: the library is busy all year round. While we are checking out books and handing out reading incentives to hundreds of readers each day, this fall will bring new and equally rewarding challenges. Librarians will begin to work around the clock to help you find resources, assist you with tech and device questions and give support for homework assignments, tests, papers, mid-terms and finals. We ll instruct you on how to access online tools like Tutor.com as well as LearningExpress. We will search the stacks looking for the books you placed on hold to help you with your classes. So while our mission to prevent the summer slide is placed on hold, our goals to support learners throughout the academic year is just beginning again. For more information on Back to School library resources and materials, please talk to your librarians at any service desk. We look forward to serving you during the school year rush, the Spring Break rush, and again at Summer Reading Like the Library Friends BOOK SALE Mark your calendars for the next Friends Book Sale. 6 Banned Books Week September 21-27, 2014 Banned Books Week, an annual celebration of the freedom to read since 1982, is observed the last week of September. Each year, librarians, booksellers, teachers and countless others take this opportunity to highlight the importance of intellectual freedom and remind us not to take this precious freedom, essential to democracy, for granted. Check out the library s display on popular (but banned) books, music and films during your next visit. Banned Websites Awareness Day Wednesday, September 24, 2014 The American Association of School Librarians (AASL) designated September 28, 2011, as the first annual Banned Websites Awareness Day. Fast Facts by Department of Education Tech Director Karen Cator: Broad filters are not helpful: What we have had is what I consider brute force technologies that shut down wide swaths of the Internet, like all of YouTube, for example. Or they may shut down anything that has anything to do with social media, or anything that is a game, Cator shared. These broad filters aren t actually very helpful, because we need much more nuanced filtering. Ezra Jack Keats Grant Public education is one of the greatest legacies of our country, one that benefits children from every walk of life. For Keats, the popular Children s book author, it was at public school that he received his greatest encouragement to pursue his vocation as an artist. And the public library was a haven that introduced him to the wonders of art history. To offer a similar experience to new generations, the Ezra Jack Keats Foundation created Minigrants, through which awards of $500 are given to public schools and public libraries for projects that foster creative expression, working together and interaction with a diverse community. The Burlington Public Library was Iowa s only 2014 recipient of the Ezra Jack Keats grant. The library s winning proposal features beautiful creations out of recycled, plastic lids. WHAT YOU CAN DO: Support the library and this educational opportunity by dropping off your recycled, plastic lids to the library during your next visit. To learn more about this grant, please contact Youth Services Librarian, Angie Pilkington. Kids need to be taught how to be responsible digital citizens. [We need to] address the topic at school, the library or home in the form of education, Cator says. How do we educate this generation of young people to be safe online, to be secure online, to protect their personal information, to understand privacy, and how that all plays out when they re in an online space? Learn more at Murray Foundation Grant The Harry and Virginia Murray Foundation awarded funds to the Friends of Burlington Public Library to purchase the prize books that go to babies, children, and teens who finish the summer reading program. These books are a great incentive to kids who enjoy getting to pick out a book of their own to keep after spending the summer reading. Be A Hero: Save a Life Blood Drive Did you know that someone in the U.S. needs blood every two seconds that more than 41,000 blood donations are needed every day? Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center will hold Blood Drives at the Burlington Public Library on Tuesdays, August 5 and September 30 from 12-2pm. If you can t make it down to give blood at the library, you can call the Center on 3407 Agency Street at to schedule an appointment.
