Compelling priorities for new legislative sessions: Thomas Elias Thursday, November 28, 2013 PasadenaStarNews.com The Pasadena Star-News ( Considering the bounty of Thanksgiving: Letters Considering the bounty and what holiday means About that Thanksgiving turkey dinner: I couldn t find it in me to sit down to a turkey dinner and stuff myself when just last month our government cut the food stamp program from so many hungry families, maybe even next door to me or you. But there comes a time when you have to look at the truth of just what a real tradition is and the roots of why and how it is celebrated. In doing so there is much to be thankful for and much more to be given in awakening that truth in us all. Patricia Huff, Arcadia Pasadena system is the go-to library for the region I was pleased to read your lead story this week about the libraries. It is very good to call our attention to the superb resources available to all of us. However, I was astonished and surprised that there was no mention made of our magnificent library system here in Pasadena! We in Pasadena have been promoting the joy of reading, learning and exploring thought for over 130 years, even before we were a city. We tax ourselves so that we can provide our citizens a library system that is one of the finest and most admired in the entire country. We have 10 libraries that are open six and seven days a week. These are easily accessible to all parts of the city because, in addition to the Main Library located in the heart of the city, there are nine libraries situated in neighborhoods throughout Pasadena. About 3,500 Pasadenans a day take advantage of the libraries 600,000-plus books, CDs, e-books, DVDs, recorded books, magazines and newspapers. In addition they use computers to do research, create data bases, formulate business plans. One may even reserve a librarian with specific subject expertise. In addition to the physical facilities there is an amazing staff headed by Jan Sanders who is nationally known for leading libraries in the use of computers and in moving into the digital age. She speaks and teaches all over the U.S. helping lead libraries and librarians into the new age of the cloud, and spearheading learning into an unknown and exciting future. The Pasadena Library has a regional reach in that it is the go-to library for the San Gabriel Valley. May I suggest that you do a story or a series of stories about the Pasadena libraries remarkably exciting resources that are available to all Pasadenans whether they are children, teenagers or adults of any age. 6 Southland libraries turn a page and embrace the digital age By Kevin Smith, San Gabriel Valley Tribune Monday, November 25, 2013 PasadenaStarNews.com The Pasadena Star-News ( Southland libraries turn a page and embrace the digital age CERRITOS >> Don Buckley can remember how libraries were when he got into the business 40 years ago. They were very book-centric, so when you got something different like vinyl records it was kind of a big deal like, Wow it s not a book, said Buckley, who serves as librarian for the Cerritos Library. Then it went from records to tapes and from tapes to CDs. And finally, videotapes came in. That was a big thing. And the evolution has continued. These days, people are going online and accessing mountains of information through their personal computers, laptops, tablets and smartphones. Most of the research material that used to require one or more trips to the library can now be found on the Internet. People are accessing it at home, at coffee shops, at restaurants and virtually anyplace else that has a WiFi connection. And books? With tablets and e-readers, consumers are downloading 10 to 15 books at a time without ever leaving home. Today s libraries clearly reflect this digital shift. Many now have banks of computers, more meeting space and a greater emphasis on quick access to information. And somewhere along the way they have also become more inviting places to hang out. Fifty years ago, if you were going to build a library you would have built a rectangular building and jammed as many books as possible into the shelves, Buckley said. Then you would have added some uncomfortable furniture and that was about it as far as creature comforts. Not so today. We create areas that are pleasing to the eye areas that also may be enriching, Buckley said. Today s libraries are centered much more around the individual, not around the material. And when it comes to that newly expanded mission, the 88,000-square-foot Cerritos Library may well be the Taj Majal of Southland libraries, both visually and technology-wise. It s the first titanium-clad building constructed in the U.S. and the inspiration for its layout and modern design were drawn largely from the Frank Gehry-designed Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain. 7 and exhibits on display, as well as sounds coming from the rainforest and aquarium areas, add to the multi-sensory experience for visitors. Staff members wear wireless headsets for easy communication when assisting visitors. And a computerized circulation system that uses radio frequency identification simplifies the circulation process, including easy and convenient self-checkout. Smart cards with photo IDs double as debit cards for print services. We have 180 computers and a brand new teen studio that will seat about 70 people, Buckley said. It has three 65-inch, touch screens on the wall. Our total library seating is about 700 seats now, and sometimes I can t believe that. We have about 1 million visitors a year, or 2,800 a day. After school lets out every room is filled with people. The $12 million Old Town Newhall Library, which opened in September of last year, also reflects the changing role of libraries. I remember sitting in a seminar in the late 1990s when they thought the Internet would put libraries out of business, said Ed Kieczykowski, Santa Clarita s city librarian. But the opposite has happened. Computers become outdated very fast, and in some cases it s become a matter of social economics. You have kids with computers that need more bandwidth and are not fast enough. But ours are. We ve really seen a huge increase in library usage. The library s special programs which include Baby Toddler Storytime, Homework Help and a senior creative writing class, among others are typically full, according to Kieczykowski. A lot of our meeting space is taken up by the programs we provide, he said. The demand for these programs is big because every parent wants their child to succeed. The city of Santa Clarita is a city of readers and we get a lot of requests for material on bestseller lists. We also get a lot of requests for downloadable copies of those materials. A recent study from the American Library Association reveals that technology at libraries is in increasing demand. More than 60 percent of libraries report increased use of public access workstations, 74.1 percent say they ve seen increased use of WiFi and nearly 90 percent of public libraries now offer Internet access. They re also harnessing communication tools, such as Blogger, Wordpress, Vox and Twitter, to reach the public. American Library Association President Barbara Stripling said libraries have greatly expanded their role in the community and now serve as a gathering place for much more than reading. They are becoming production centers, she said. We are seeing a lot more people come who have the tools, expertise and technology to create things. They may come in to use a 3D printer, because more and more libraries are buying those. So you could create a part for your dishwasher that s broken or even create a toy. Professionals in the community are also offering workshops on everything from how to fix a leaking pipe to home repair or creative writing, she said. Page 2 of 3 Jan 10, :05:44PM MST

Startup businesses are also using libraries because they can get access to technology and software they otherwise couldn t afford, Stripling said. Libraries are serving as incubators where people have the space and software to design how they want to roll out their business. An increasing number of libraries are also offering video production facilities, she said. The Brooklyn Public Library just put in a large auditorium and learning space as a video production center, Stripling said. And the Chicago Public Library is renowned for its new media center for teens. They can get instruction on how to make a video and then become mentors to others. So what does the future hold for libraries? One of the things we think about a lot when we talk about digital literacy for libraries are the critical skills and special navigation skills that are required, Stripling said. We have a renewed focus on teaching those critical thinking skills. It s truly a wonderful time to a librarian right now. Renee Tobin, library services manager at the Archibald Library in Rancho Cucamonga, said that facility and many other libraries now offer a service that allows customers to download books to their portable devices. We have two libraries in the city and both have technology centers with 16 to 20 computers, she said. We also do classes at each location on everything from an introduction to computers to how to use Excel. Tobin said technology has become a big part of American culture and library operations. We ve all got our devices, she said with a laugh. We have computers at home, as well as smartphones and ipads... there s no escaping it. 9 NUMBERS, FACTS AND TRENDS SHAPING THE WORLD FOR RELEASE DECEMBER 11, 2013 How Americans Value Public Libraries in Their Communities 54% of Americans have used a public library in the past year, and 72% live in a library household. Most say libraries are very important to their communities. FOR FURTHER INFORMATION ON THIS REPORT: Kathryn Zickuhr, Research Associate, Internet Lee Rainie, Director, Internet Kristen Purcell, Associate Director, Internet Maeve Duggan, Research Assistant, Internet URL: RECOMMENDED CITATION: Pew Research Center, December 2013, How Americans value public libraries in their communities.

1 PEW RESEARCH CENTER Summary of Findings Americans strongly value the role of public libraries in their communities, both for providing access to materials and resources and for promoting literacy and improving the overall quality of life. Most Americans say they have only had positive experiences at public libraries, and value a range of library resources and services. The importance of public libraries to their communities Some 90% of Americans ages 16 and older said that the closing of their local public library would have an impact on their community, with 63% saying it would have a major impact. Asked about the personal impact of a public library closing, two-thirds (67%) of Americans said it would affect them and their families, including 29% who said it would have a major impact. If your local public library closed, what impact would that have on you and your family? On your community as a whole? Among all Americans ages 16+ Major impact Minor impact No impact Total impact Impact on you and your family Impact on your community 29 Source: Pew Research Center s Library Services Survey of 6,224 Americans ages 16 and older conducted July 18-September 30, The margin of error for the overall sample is plus or minus 1.4 percentage points. The survey was conducted in English and Spanish and on landline and cell phones. PEW RESEARCH CENTER Moreover, the vast majority of Americans ages 16 and older say that public libraries play an important role in their communities: 95% of Americans ages 16 and older agree that the materials and resources available at public libraries play an important role in giving everyone a chance to succeed; 95% say that public libraries are important because they promote literacy and a love of reading; 94% say that having a public library improves the quality of life in a community; 81% say that public libraries provide many services people would have a hard time finding elsewhere. Meanwhile, while most Americans feel that libraries have done a good job embracing new technology, they are split on whether public libraries are as essential as they were in the past for finding information:

2 PEW RESEARCH CENTER Just 34% of Americans ages 16 and older of say that public libraries have not done a good job keeping up with new technologies, while 55% disagree. 52% of Americans say that people do not need public libraries as much as they used to because they can find most information on their own, while 46% disagreed. Though many library services are seen as important, there are varying levels of enthusiasm for different services Some 91% of Americans say they have had some exposure to libraries in the past, and we asked these respondents a series of questions about the importance of various library services to them and their families. 1 Americans strongly value library services such as access to books and media; having a quiet, safe place to spend time, read, or study; and having librarians to help people find information. Other services, such as assistance finding and applying for jobs, are more important to particular groups, including those with lower levels of education or household income. How important are these library services to you and your family? Among Americans ages 16+ who have ever used a public library or had a household member use a public library, the percentage who say these services are Books and media Librarian assistance Having a quiet, safe place Research resources Programs for youth Internet, computers, printers Very Important Somewhat Important Net Women, African-Americans and Hispanics, adults who live in lower-income households, and adults with lower levels of educational attainment are more likely than other groups to declare all the library services we asked about very important. Adults ages Programs for adults Help applying for gov't services Help finding, applying for job are also more likely than younger or older respondents to say many of the services are very important, as are parents with minor children. Source: Pew Research Center s Library Services Survey of 6,224 Americans ages 16 and older conducted July 18-September 30, The margin of error for the overall sample is plus or minus 1.4 percentage points. The survey was conducted in English and Spanish and on landline and cell phones. PEW RESEARCH CENTER This includes the 86% of Americans ages 16 and older who have ever visited a library or used a library website, and the 54% of Americans who say other members of their household are library users.

3 PEW RESEARCH CENTER Libraries are also particularly valued by those who are unemployed, retired, or searching for a job, as well as those living with a disability and internet users who lack home internet access: 56% of internet users without home access say public libraries basic technological resources (such as computers, internet, and printers) are very important to them and their family, compared with 33% of all respondents. 49% of unemployed and retired respondents say they librarian assistance in finding information to be very important, compared with 41% of employed respondents. 47% of job seekers say help finding or applying for a job is very important to them and their families. 40% of those living with a disability say help applying for government services is very important, compared with 27% of those without a disability. Most Americans know where their local library is, but many are unfamiliar with all the services they offer. Libraries are well known in their communities and they are usually easy to get to and relatively easy to navigate. Asked about their ability to access public libraries and public library websites: How well-informed do you feel about the different services your public library offers? Do you feel like you know 91% of Americans say they know where the closest public library is to where they currently live; among these respondents, most said the closest public library is five miles or less away from their home. 93% of Americans say that it would be easy to visit a public library in person if they wanted to, with 62% saying it would be very easy. Similarly, 82% of Americans overall say it would be easy to use their local public library s website, with 47% saying it would be very easy. 91% of Americans who have ever used a public library All or most Some of what it offers Not much Nothing at all say it is not difficult to find what they re looking for, including 35% who say it is very easy Based on Americans ages 16+ who have ever used a public library (n=5,393) PEW RESEARCH CENTER Despite the fact that libraries are easily available to most, there are large numbers of Americans who say they are not sure about all the services libraries offer. Echoing the findings of our 2012 survey, 23% of those who have ever used a public library said they feel like they know all or most of the service and programs their library offers, while a plurality (47%) said that they know some of what it offers. About one in five (20%) say they don t know very much about what is offered, and 10% say they know nothing at all.

4 PEW RESEARCH CENTER 54% of Americans have used a public library in the past 12 months, and 72% live in a library household Over half (54%) of Americans ages 16 and older have used a public library in some way in the past 12 months, whether by visiting in person or using a public library website: 81% of Americans ages 16 and older have visited a public library or bookmobile at one point or another in their lives; 48% of Americans have done so in the past 12 months, down from 53% in % of those ages 16 and older have visited a public library website; 30% of Americans have done so in the past 12 months, up from 25% in Additionally, among parents with minor children living at home, 70% say that a child in the house has visited a public library or bookmobile in the past 12 months. Taken together, this means that 72% of all Americans ages 16 and older have either used a public library in the past 12 months or live in a household where another family member or a child is an active recent user of the library. Most Americans who have ever used a public library have had positive experiences Among all Americans who have ever used a public library: 94% said that based on their own experiences, they would say that public libraries are welcoming, friendly place. 91% said that they personally have never had a negative experience using a public library, either in person or online. 67% said that the public library nearest to where they live could be described as a nice, pleasant space to be ; another 22% say it s an okay space, but could use some improvements.
