Nonfiction Booktalking Tips Approach your books with a supply of post-it notes or tape flags. Browse through the books on your shelf. Do any have topics that particularly appeal to you? Grab them! Look through the illustrations and photographs. Is there one that is absolutely irresistible? Read the caption and then scan the accompanying information. Mark it. Keep browsing. Is there another great illustration or a fascinating fact guaranteed to secure the attention of your audience? Mark it. Browse the book just enough to get you a feel for what it is saying. Jot down notes to help you remember any key points, then stick your notes in the book. Select books on a variety of topics. You are not attracted by absolutely every topic and neither is your audience. Keep your booktalk moving. This is not the age of rhetoric. Kids are used to needing only short attention spans. Make it quick and snappy. Be enthusiastic! Let your audience see your excitement about the book. Let the wild woman or wild guy inside out! Include a commercial for your library, media center or classroom collection. Make it easy for kids to get the book. Make transparencies or use PowerPoint whenever possible. It cuts down on heavy hauling and allows the books to be used by their audience. 11

TEN REASONS WHY WE MUST HELP OUR KIDS LOVE READING 1. Kids have to love reading to become excellent readers. Only if they love reading will they spend lots of time reading. Practice is everything. 2. Avid readers acquire a more complex sense of language. They speak better, write better, and deal better with complex ideas. 3. Reading gives children wide-ranging frames of reference, which make all learning easier. Even children who read only fiction will pick up facts about history, geography, politics and science. 4. By high school, only avid readers will have the literacy skills to excel in any course that demands a good deal of reading in other words, in any top-level English, foreign language, history or science course. They are the kids in the honors classes, the kids who score high on the SAT exam, the kids who have a shot at attending top colleges. 5. Excellent reading skills make it more likely kids will weather personal tr auma with their academic credentials intact, since they will be able to keep up with their schoolwork by using only a fraction of their time and emotional energy. In contrast, a personal crisis will usually wipe out a poor reader. 6. Avid reading gives kids a sense of perspective. After seeing life described through the eyes of hundreds of different narrators, they see that there are many ways to look at situations; there are many sides to most issues. 7. Reading helps children to be compassionate. The essence of compassion is the ability to understand another s viewpoint. Reading brings children into thousands of different lives, allowing them to understand these lives in all their complexity. In television sitcoms, problems are solved with a snappy line in half an hour. 8. Avid readers are exposed to a world full of possibilities and opportunities. Maybe they ll read a Michael Crichton thriller and want to become a scientist. Mark Berent s Air Force stories might spark an interest in flying jets. No matter how limited the world in which children live, with reading they can go anywhere. They can dream anything. 9. Avid reading develops critical thinking skills. Rather than hearing information only in sound bits, avid readers learn to follow complex argumen ts and remember multifaceted plots. 10. A love of reading is one of the major joys of life. Huddled in a deep chair by the fire with a terrifying thriller; lounging on the beach, laughing at a comic novel; falling asleep over a gentle romance. Without these pleasures, life is a little darker and drabber. Leonhardt, Mary. 99 WAYS TO GET KIDS TO LOVE READING AND 100 BOOKS THEY LL LOVE. Three Rivers Press, $ Used with the permission of Mary Leonhardt. 12

A Fe w Th ou gh ts from th e Expe rts w h ich is ofte n u s. Children need to see that reading is an important part of life. If an adult is seen reading regularly, then it is! If not, it must not be. Read. Talk about what you re ad. Kids need to know that we consider reading fun. A lot of them today consider reading only for work. With boys in the tween years, the best book is not the issue. What is an issue is what books they will actually read. Do NOT tell a boy in any way, verbally or in body language, that the books he likes are bad and that the books girls like are good. Kids need our assurance and our permission to read easy books. Include plenty of easier books in your booktalks. In a recent study, reluctant reader s indicated that they only liked to read when they got to pick whatever they want to read. Let them choose!!! Encourage teachers to let that happen. Studies show that reading comprehension is related to reader s interest in the topic. Interested readers can comprehend materials normally considered to be beyond their reading level. Boys are less likely to talk about or overtly respond to their reading than girls are. But they LOVE information that exports readily to conversation that they can repeat to other people. This is one reason why nonfiction works well. Leonard Saxe recommends that you recommend books to a boy conversationally, side by side, standing next to each other, rather than confrontationally, face to face. And look at THIS picture! Keep a list in a prominent place of what the most popular books are in your librar y or media center. Create buzz. So you get a waiting list. Hey, that s a goal! If you are a school librarian, take over the teachers suggestions and recommendations for summer reading for their classes. Tell them you will remove any books that are outdated, out of print for ages and no longer available. The resulting list, which can be consolidated, 13

of course, will be a lot more viable than a list that includes mostly out -of-print books. Include an extra line: if nothing on this list looks good to you, ask at your library or bookstore for a book you might like! Wouldn't it be great if the public library sent out a list of high interest books that they have available to add to the school list? A Few Seeds for Programming and Promotion Public Librarians: Find out which schools in your area have Title One programs. Contact the coordinator. They must do evening programs which include parents and families of their students. I have done a lot of these. You get to read a story, bring along and booktalk some books that will get them excited about coming to the library, and promote the heck out of the library. Be dramatic and bring out your wild side. If you are good, they will ask you back and tell every other Title One program to invite you. Just like us, they want free programs. Nobody has any money. Ditto school and classroom visits. Offer to visit classes to promote books and the library. Again, be dramatic and exciting. They will beg you to come at least every year. A young Canadian librarian told me she tells teachers she will bring books that she guarantees boys will want to read. She is stunned at how well books on boy topics work in not only getting them excited in the classroom, but, next step, straight into the public library. Contact local re-enactor groups at historic sites in your area. Many of these people would be delighted to do programs, frequently for nothing. Have, for instance, a Civil War program in which the re-enactor tells stories, drills the audience of kids and talks about the Civil War or any other historical events in your area. You have a supply of books to display and booktalk. Bookclubs are all the rage, as we know, and thank heaven for it. How about starting one about Gross and Disgusting Books? Think outside the box to see if we can attract a nontraditional audience. Also consider the Bookclub in a Bag Program These include ten books and a discussion guide. Set up a program to teach adults about reading to groups of kids. Grandpas often have free time, and boys are in dire need of male reading models. As we all know from bitter experience, bombing while reading to children is not a pleasant experience. Start a program in which you model reading aloud and they practice in front of each other. Pick a selection of surefire read-aloud winners. Call the schools and alert them to the availability of trained people in the community to read to kids, or ask the readers to volunteer to read in the library. Related to that is a program to teach older kids, including babysitters, to read to younger ones. Promote a good book consultation service. Most people really need help in finding books their children will really enjoy. Make sure the staff who are working on the desk know the collection well. Make a sign that says Children s Book Expert Available to Help You Pick Out Books You will Enjoy!. Traditional programs, author visits, storytimes, summer reading programs have always worked well and continue to do so. So many programs for children require adults to transport them. That I feel 14

one of the best things we can do is reach out to adults. Ask to speak to any women s or church groups in your area about some of the wonderful children s books in the library. Take a look at storytubes the youtube of kids promoting books to other kids. Consider making a PowerPoint CD or DVD that will highlight new titles available in your library or media center. We know we will never be able to place every appealing book face out on the shelves. Think of how cool it would be to sit down in front of a computer with a PowerPoint show, all books numbered to make requesting them easier, and note that the library has books on all sorts of intriguing topics. Make copies and give them to every classroom. This is a great volunteer project. Publishers do not at all object to our use of book covers in promotion. Better yet, use a digital picture frame at the checkout desk. 15
