1 Summer Reading List Entering Fifth Grade

2 June 15, 2007 Dear Parents, As the school year comes to an end, the teachers and administration are grateful for the strides the students made in reading this year and want to maintain their enthusiasm and interest in literature over the summer. Enclosed you will find your child s grade-level summer reading list. This list should be seen as a guide or a place to start when looking for books with your child. The books on this list are not required, but a suggested selection of quality literature available in local libraries. We are asking that each child read the required grade level text and a minimum of three additional books, either with an adult or individually. In addition, students will be asked to complete the attached assignment for his or her grade level. We encourage your child to read additional literature if he or she finishes the required readings. In this packet, you will also find a reading log on which your child should record the books read. Please add any additional books read independently or together to the book log. In addition to recording the books, your child should rate each book using the key at the bottom of the reading log page. The log must be signed by a parent and returned with the required book project/writing assignment to school by Friday, September 14, Students will be recognized for their completion of the summer reading requirements. 3 Summer Reading Instructions for Students Entering 5th Grade I. Summer Reading *Required Reading: The Incredible Journey by Sheila Burnford. Students are asked to read a minimum of three books in addition to the required reading listed above. These books may include selections from the school s grade level book list or other appropriate favorites. Please list the titles of the books on the book log provided in the packet. II. Writing/Project For the required text listed above, we ask that you complete ONE project/writing assignment listed below. You may choose which project you would like to complete. This is a required summer assignment. i. Create a life-size model of your favorite character in the required text. You may use any materials to complete the model. Be creative and have fun! Including paragraphs, write a 2 page creative writing piece to describe your character. Tell why you like him/her and explain their thoughts and feelings. Do you feel that you can relate to this character? ii. iii. Create a sculpture of a character from the required text. Use any combination of media or materials (clay, wood, wire, sticks, stones, etc.) Including paragraphs, write a 2 page creative writing piece explaining the development of the character throughout the book. How did the author use this character to develop the plot? Create a book cover for the required text as it would look if YOU designed the cover. Please refer to the attached book cover guidelines. Use any media (pastels, colored pencils, etc.) for the illustration as you make the book cover interesting to a reader who would pick up the book. Include details about the author on the inside cover with a short summary of the book. Remember to include the title and author on the cover. Including paragraphs, write a 2 page creative writing piece from the perspective of a publisher who is trying to sell the book to a bookstore. III. Procedure for Submitting Work Your new teacher will collect the creative writing assignment and project, with the book log on Friday, September 14, Students should complete the selected assignment and readings, receiving a certificate and reward in September. In the weeks to follow the start of school, your new teacher will ask you to share the project and writing assignment in class, as you discuss your thoughts and perspectives on the required text. IV. Extra Credit In addition to the project listed above, earn the opportunity to receive extra credit through the completion of additional 2 page book reports for other literature which you enjoyed this summer. You will earn extra credit for each submitted report. If you choose to do this option, please hand these reports in with the required assignments on September 14, 2007.

5 READING CUES TO USE WHEN READING WITH YOUR CHILD Reading Cues Look at the beginning sounds Skip the word and read to the end of the sentence Look for key words in the sentence Look for little words in bigger words Does it make sense in the sentences? Does it sound right? Go back and reread the sentence Look at the pictures Reading Cue Questions Did that make sense? You said. What does that mean? Have you heard a word like that before? What would make sense here? What is happening in the story? Does this word make sense in the story? Questions for syntax cues Did that sound right? Would it be correct to say? Can you think of a better word that fits? What word would sound right? Questi ons for visual cues Did that look right? Do you know a word that looks like that? What do you notice about that word? Do you notice something familiar about that word? Do you see a part of the word you know? Questio ns to build comprehension Can you tell me about the main characters in the story? How did that story make you feel? Does that story remind you of anything? Start from the beginning and tell me the main events in order Predict what will happen before you finish reading Questions for self-corrections Were you right? Why did you stop? What did you notice? What else could you try?

6 RECOMMENDED READING FOR ENTERING GRADE FIVE Alcott, Louisa May, Little Women,1962 A classic story which chronicles the lives of the March Sisters as they grow into young ladies in 19 th century New England. CLASSIC Armstrong, William H., Sounder,1969 The story of a poor sharecropper family living in the Deep South during the depression. The main character is a young boy who has a beloved dog. FICTION Atwater, Richard and Florence, Mr. Popper s Penguins, 1938 When Admiral Drake sends Mr. Popper a penguin, life at 432 Proudfoot Avenue is never the same again. From one penguin living in the icebox, the Popper family grows to include 12 penguins. CLASSIC Bagnold, Enid, National Velvet, 1935 Fourteen-year-old Velvet is determined to turn her untamed horse into a champion and personally ride him to victory in the world's greatest steeplechase, the Grand National. CLASSIC Baum, L. Frank, The Wizard of Oz, 1900 The classic tale of a girl, her dog, her friends and a magical land. CLASSIC Borton de Trevino E., I, Juan de Pareja, 1965 The story of Juan, a slave who embarks on harrowing adventures, defying the odds, to fulfill his inner purpose of teaching himself to become an artist. HISTORICAL FICTION Brink, Carol, Caddie Woodlawn,1935 A story about the adventures and practical jokes of Caddie, a spunky tomboy living in Wisconsin during Pioneer days. HISTORICAL FICTION Burleigh, Robert, Into the Woods, 2003 Audubon, famous naturalist and artist finds his life work in the woods, studying and drawing birds. BIOGRAPHY Estes, Eleanor, Ginger Pye, 1951 The disappearance of a new puppy named Ginger and the appearance of a mysterious man in a yellow hat brings excitement to the lives of the Pye children. CLASSIC Fitzhugh, Louise, Harriet the Spy, 1964 Twelve year old Harriet thinks spying on people will make her a better writer, but her friends see it differently. FICTION George, Jean Craighead, My Side of the Mountain, 1959 Terribly unhappy in his family s crowded New York City apartment, Sam Gribley runs away to the solitude and danger of the mountains, where he finds a side of himself he never knew. FICTION

7 Giblin, James, Good Brother, Bad Brother: The Story of Edwin Booth and John Wilkes Booth, 2005 Tells the life stories of nineteenth-century brothers Edwin and John Wilkes Booth, describing the similarities and differences between the two men, chronicling John's alleged assassination of Abraham Lincoln, and examining the impact of John's crime on the Booth family for decades afterward. NONFICTION Goodall, Jane, My Life with Chimpanzees, 1996 A book about Jane Goodall, the first woman to successfully study chimpanzees in the wild. NONFICTION Green, Michelle, A Strong Right Arm: The Story of Mamie Peanut Johnson, 2002 A true story of the underdog who succeeds despite tremendous odds. BIOGRAPHY Hoose, Philip M., We Were There Too: Young People in U.S. History, 2001 Biographies of dozens of young people who made a mark in American history, including explorers, planters, spies, sweatshop workers, and civil rights workers. BIOGRAPHY Jo nes, Charlotte F., Mistakes that Worked, 1991 Stories behind forty things that were invented or named by accident, including Frisbees, X- Rays, Silly Putty and Velcro. NONFICTION L Engle, Madeline, A Wrinkle in Time, 1962 Meg seeks to free her father from the forces that have imprisoned him in another dimension. FANTASY L Engle, Madeline, Meet the Austins, 1960 The Austins welcome a difficult orphan into their home. FICTION Levitin, Sonia, Journey to America, 1970 During World War II, a Jewish mother and her daughter find refuge in Switzerland and hope to be reunited with the father, who has immigrated to America. HISTORICAL FICTION Lowry, Lois, Number the Stars, 1996 This story is based on the Danish Underground that transported Jewish Danes to safety in Sweden during World War II. HISTORICAL FICTION Mash, Robert, How To Keep Dinosaurs, 2005 A humorous guide to the care and feeding of dinosaurs. Provides a detailed analysis of many species of dinosaurs, their habitat, size, and eating habits. NONFICTION Montgomery, Sy, The Tarantula Scientist, 2004 Follow the career of Sam Marshall, tarantula scientist to the rain forests of French Guiana as he hunts for, finds, and studies tarantulas. NONFICTION Naylor, Phyllis Reynolds, Shiloh, 1991 When 11-year-old Marty Preston chances upon a mistreated beagle pup in his hometown of Friendly, West Virginia, he has to face some tough questions in what to do with this dog. FICTION

BIOGRAPHY Paterson, Katherine, The Bridge to Terabithia, 1985 Jess and Leslie create a secret kingdom in the woods named Terabithia. Here they reign as king and queen, fighting off imaginary giants and the walking dead, sharing stories and dreams, and plotting against the schoolmates who tease them. FANTASY Pearce, Phillippa, Tom s Midnight Garden, 1958 Outside the back door is a garden, which everyone tells Tom doesn't exist. But the magical place in which Tom finds himself is certainly a garden, and surprising things happen in this garden when he hears the grandfather clock strike thirteen. FICTION Rector, Anne E., Anne Elizabeth s Diary: A Young Artist s True Story, 2004 The diary of an artistic 12 year old living in New York in 1912 with sidebars that include information about the author s family and notable facts from the time period. NONFICTION Ryan, Pam Muñoz, Esperanza Rising, 2000 Esperanza, along with her mother, make a perilous journey to America and become migrant farm workers in California. Esperanza herself must sort out her own previous prejudices, while learning to live as, in her mind, a peasant. HISTORICAL FICTION Selden, George, The Cricket in Times Square, 1989 Newbery Honor - A Connecticut cricket sings in the New York subway. FANTASY Sewell, Anna, Black Beauty, 1941 A horse, in 19 th century England, encounters many misfortunes until finally finding the happiness and contentment he deserves. CLASSIC Sperry, Armstrong, Call It Courage, 1968 A coming of age story set in the South Pacific. son of the chief of the Hikueru Island. FICTION It chronicles the journey of Mafatu, the Tolkien, J.R.R., The Hobbit, 1975 A hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, lives happily in his cozy home until Gandalf chooses him to share in an adventure from which he may never return. FANTASY Travers, P. L., Mary Poppins, 1934 From the moment Mary Poppins arrives at Number Seventeen Cherry-Tree Lane, everyday life at the Banks house is forever changed. CLASSIC Twain, Mark, The Prince and the Pauper, 1931 The story of a young prince mistaken for a pauper named Tom and forced to live a pauper s life while Tom unwillingly takes on the life of a prince. CLASSIC Twain, Mark, Tom Sawyer, 1955 The classic American tale of Tom, a boy growing up in a Missouri village during the 1850 s. CLASSIC

9 Yep, Laurence, Dragonwings, 1975 In the early 20 th Century, a young Chinese boy finds his father in San Francisco and helps him realize his dream of making a flying machine. HISTORICAL FICTION Zhensum, Zheng, A Young Painter: The Life and Paintings of Wang Yani, 1991 Examines the life and works of the young Chinese girl who started painting animals at the age of three and later became the youngest artist to have a one-person show at the Smithsonian. NONFICTION
