2 President s Message We re off to a great start this year Jonathan Dubin It was a great Hinman year topped off by Pat Yancey s annual meeting at the Grove Park Inn in Asheville, North Carolina. Pat and Julie sure know how to throw a party. General Chairman Dave Lee put on a fantastic 103rd Hinman Dental Meeting highlighted by the G.O.L.D. Program for younger dentists and students. A lot of people worked hard to make that a great new program, but I think it was a success because the younger dentists (and students) were thirsting for something like it something for the next generation of dentists beyond technical classes. I am excited to be the president of the Hinman Dental Society this year. It will be a great year for the society with three outstanding membership programs that Clayton Davis has arranged for us. September 21 will be Dr. Jeffrey Rouse presenting at the Ritz-Carlton. Also at the Ritz on November 16 will be Dr. Steve Hart. On January 21 bring your staff to hear Mr. Bryan Dodge at the fabulous Fox Theater. Along the way make sure you are on a committee for our 104th Hinman Dental Meeting. Dr. Jim Roos and his program chairmen, Brad Greenway and Kate Robinson are busy putting the final touches on what s shaping up to be a wonderful program for the next best Hinman ever. If you haven t been contacted for an assignment please or call Lynn Leidel (lleidel@hinman. org) to secure your spot on a committee. Remember that part of the privilege of Hinman membership is commitment to work at least eight hours at the March Jonathan and Traci Dubin meeting. Committee dinner meetings will be announced later in the year. You don t want to miss volunteering because that is your ticket to the Hinman General Chairman & President s Reception. To cap off another great year of continuing education, our annual meeting will be at the newly renovated Sonesta Resort on Hilton Head Island from June 3-5. Mark your calendar for that weekend and maybe make it a full week family vacation at the beach. HINMAN DENTAL SOCIETY Officers President (automatic) Jonathan S. Dubin President-elect Robert J. 3 General Chairman s Message Discover the Difference Jim Roos Greetings to all and congratulations on being members of the finest dental organization around! The 2015 Hinman meeting was another huge success. General Chairman Dave Lee and his team did an outstanding job putting on a very innovative and enjoyable program that will provide inspiration for many future meetings. They and our society deserve credit for doing what we do best! This year we are inviting our attendees to Discover the Difference. I chose this theme hoping to attract more dental professionals who may have heard about Hinman but never experienced it. We are putting our reputation on the line and I know we are up for the challenge. Our 2016 program is well under way as we choose the topics and schedule for our speakers in March. My program chairmen, Brad Greenway and Kate Robinson and I are excited about what we have planned. We will continue some of the new ideas from 2015 such as the G.O.L.D. program, lab day and career connections. Added to this year s program will be mini residencies in geriatrics, pediatrics and cone beam technologies. These tracks of courses will emphasize many facets of each subject and can be taken as a whole or in part. We have invited more than 20 new speakers to Hinman and we re planning on many topics that take into account the whole body and how the oral cavity relates to our overall health. Our lab day is going to include several world-renowned technicians and promises to be well attended as we continue our quest for more dental laboratory involvement. My wife Liz and Traci Dubin are putting together an outstanding special events program that will be inviting and exciting. Captain Richard Phillips will be our keynote speaker and will share his compelling story. He is the subject of the motion picture, Captain Phillips, which I would encourage everyone to see before March 17th. We are also planning a new Friday night activity that involves all of our guests, dentists, auxiliaries and exhibitors. More info will come on this event as it comes together but we re going to have a great time! As everyone in my position knows, we could not even attempt a meeting like this without our fantastic staff. They are so helpful, knowledgeable, creative and supportive that I can t begin to say enough good things about them. Everyone should know that our staff is vital to our society and success. All of you who make up the Hinman Dental Society are to be commended as well. You are the best, most dedicated group of dentists anywhere and this year our Hinman guests will Discover the Difference. 7 MEMBER CORNER We need you! We hope you have enjoyed reading our new member corner feature over the past year. In order to keep it going strong, we need more content! This is a great chance to contribute to the society newsletter. If you are interested in submitting information to the Hinman Member Corner, please contact Laura Steele at lsteele@hinman.org Hinman History Series Part 1: HISTORY OF THOMAS P. HINMAN & THE HINMAN DENTAL SOCIETY To get a glimpse of the roots of our society, it starts with one man Dr. Thomas P. Hinman. He was born in 1870 in Ontario, Canada and moved with his family to Atlanta at age 9. He graduated from Southern Dental College in Atlanta with his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in The following year, he joined the faculty of his alma mater and became Professor of Oral Surgery and also served as dean from 1917 until his death. Dr. Hinman held high offices in many professional organizations including the appointment by President Woodrow Wilson as the U.S. Delegate and Honorary Chairman of the Section VIII of the Fourth International Congress of Dentists in London. This nomination was considered one of the highest tributes in the dental world. Dr. Hinman was described as short in stature and a gifted lecturer who spoke all around the world. He was described as being loved, admired & respected, with a great amount of personal charm. He was a stickler for punctuality, rules and order in the classroom. Dr. Hinman also ran a very busy private practice, where he treated patients for 40 years. He was the first dentist in Atlanta to incorporate radiography in his practice in Several physicians would use the x-ray equipment he owned. In 1899 at the age of twenty nine, Dr. Hinman married Florence Hand. Her father was a successful business owner of the Hand Trading Company, of which Dr. Hinman was made president after Mr. Hand died. The Hinmans had one son, Thomas, Jr., who became a dentist and society member. Thomas Jr. passed away in 1942 at the age of 38. The Hinmans were integral members of Atlanta s social scene, with numerous articles about their home and participation in the lifestyles of the city s upper class. Dr. Hinman absolutely loved the game of golf & was friend of golfing legend Bobby Jones. He was a founding member and president of Druid Hills Golf Club. Throughout his life, he served as President of the National Dental Association (ADA), Georgia Dental Association and was a founding member of American College of Dentists. Dr. Hinman died in 1931, at the age of 62. The Atlanta Constitution editorialized after his death, Dr. Hinman was not only the leader of his profession in this city and state, but was a recognized authority on oral surgery throughout the world. He was scientific and adept, and his position in his art was unquestioned A man of personal charm, humane principles and large public spirit, he filled a foremost post in the community His legacy lives on daily through the works of the Hinman Dental Society and Thomas P. Hinman Dental Meeting. The Hinman Dental Society The Hinman Dental Society (once called the Fifth District Dental Society) was chartered & incorporated as a private study club in Elected officers managed the society until 1942, when the first staff person was hired. The first office for the Society was housed at the First National Bank of Atlanta in Society membership has grown steadily through the years, with 90 members in 1943, 300+ in the 1960s to more than 500 in the late 1990s. There was a drop in membership and interest during the Great Depression, where membership dwindled and people couldn t pay the $15 dues payment. The Fifth District Dental Society was renamed The Hinman Dental Society in 1988 in memory of Dr. Hinman. Today there are more than 800 members, the majority of whom volunteer at the March meeting to consistently provide the most hospitable dental meeting in the country. 7

8 Members Spotlight DAN DUNWODY TALKS ABOUT FISHING, ONE OF HIS FAVORITE PASTIMES Every successful fisherman is an optimist, always believing the next cast, the next lure or the next fly will catch an enormous fish. Just keep believing and a big fish waits for you! Dan Dunwody What interests you about fishing and how did you get involved? The outdoors, the water and the fish always seemed to be calling my name. Like dentistry and orthodontics, I was hooked early on. Weekend happiness as a child was fishing with my family, using a cane pole with a bobber, weight and hook, enticing a bite with red wigglers, crickets or bread balls. Where do you like to fish and have you visited any interesting places? Fishing trips began in the neighborhood creeks of Macon and ponds of middle Georgia. I have also covered most of North America. From Alaska for salmon, Labrador for large brook trout, the Florida Keys for tarpon, Baha, Mexico for marlin, Last Chance, Idaho for rainbow trout and the Sogue River for huge trout. I ve been smallmouth bass and walleye fishing in the boundary waters of Minnesota and Canada. One of the reasons I chose to practice in Gwinnett County was to be close to the Chattahoochee River for trout fishing and the mountain lakes of Northeast Georgia, especially Lakemont. My favorite places are the North Georgia Mountain lakes and rivers. Trout only live in the prettiest places. One of his favorite fishing spots, Bonefish Flats in Last Chance, Idaho What do you enjoy about fishing? I enjoy the relaxation of the water, whether wading or boating, being close to nature and finding the fish. Also, spending time with family and friends, fishing in a beautiful place whether with a cane pole or fishing with enthusiasts or a magnificent fly with superb equipment always provide great satisfaction. Some of the simpler pleasures in life are the most satisfying. What do you look forward to when going on a fishing trip? For any outdoorsman, the preparation for the trip, thinking like the fish you are seeking, and then applying your knowledge and technical skill to actually catch the fish are the challenges but yet so rewarding when it all comes together. EDDIE PAFFORD ENJOYS THE HOBBY OF WOODWORKING Eddie Pafford s woodworking hobby started back in 1974 when his wife wanted a piece of furniture they could not afford while he was still in dental school. He told her, I can build that and built the piece in the spare bedroom of his apartment. His hobby has evolved since then and he s made over sixty pieces since he began the hobby. When asked what he enjoys about woodworking, he stated, I enjoy working with my hands and getting my mind tuned in on creating something. Dr. Pafford has a workshop where he builds the pieces in his garage. Interestingly, his home has been featured in the first two seasons of the TV show, Resurrection, including his workshop in two of the episodes. They brought in several antique woodworking tools for the episodes to make the shop look like it was from the past. Most of the furniture Dr. Pafford builds is something that their family needs. He has built furniture ranging from beds, dining tables, coffee tables, cabinets, shelves and consoles. His favorite piece is a hutch that they use at their lake house. He once tried to incorporate calculus in one of his projects, using it to figure out an angle on one of the boards he needed to cut. After a 45 minute calculation, cutting the angles that did not match, he eyeballed it and it worked out perfectly. He decided he would stay away from calculus next time! One of the things Eddie has enjoyed about woodworking is sharing the hobby with his son and son-in-law by building pieces together that their families could use in their homes. Through the years, they have built three heart pine farm tables, one for each family. 8

9 Jonathan Dubin Named Hinman Dental Society President Dr. Jonathan Dubin once thought he might be a veterinarian. That was until he discovered in college, and while working for a veterinarian practice, that he couldn t stand to put an animal down. Veterinarian medicine s loss is the dental profession s gain. He tapped into his affinity for science and medicine and chose dentistry. He loves being able to help others with their oral health. He especially enjoys learning new treatments, procedures, materials and equipment to provide a very personal form of care for his patients. When Jonathan isn t practicing dentistry with his partner, Dr. Tammy Bregman, at Laser Assisted Cosmetic & Family Dentistry in Atlanta, he is volunteering for a variety of dental organizations. He serves on the board of directors for the Ben Massell Dental Clinic and the Fisher Foundation for Dental Education, and is clinical director of the Special Smiles program for the Special Olympics. He also is co-chair for the Georgia Mission of Mercy, and of course, spends countless hours in support of the Hinman Dental Society and Hinman Dental Meeting, as well as the Georgia Dental Association. Family is very important to Dr. Dubin. He has a wife, Traci; two sons, Zachary and Seth; and a very active nine-year-old, Mylee, who he says, puts the finishing touches on wearing me out. But, it s not just family that keeps him active. He typically rises at 4:30 every morning to exercise with friends. He used to play full-court basketball with buddies, but as the injuries stacked up among them, they turned to spinning and other less hazardous activities. This transition wasn t as easy as you might think, since Dr. Dubin describes himself as a 6 4 point guard destined to be in the NBA Hall of Fame but trapped in a 5 7 body. The Dubin family at the beach I want members to rediscover what Thomas P. Hinman knew over 100 years ago about our wonderful profession, said Dubin. And, following the meeting, I hope they bring their families to the Sonesta Resort on Hilton Head Island to celebrate another great Hinman year and enjoy the camaraderie that our Society brings with it. Dr. Dubin discovered Hinman immediately following dental school, when Dr. Joseph Glazer, whom he d met at the Dubin family bagel bakery, introduced him to the society. He explained the purpose of Hinman and its many benefits. This set Dr. Dubin on the path to serve in many roles at Hinman over the years, all leading to becoming this year s Society President. His limitations as a point guard, however, won t impact Dr. Dubin s mission as president. He is ready for the year ahead and confident that everyone will enjoy the CE, as well as the fellowship at the membership meetings throughout the year. One of his goals is to engage younger members and get them excited about service to the profession, as well as to the Society. One of his favorite quotes from Winston Churchill includes words to live by, You make a living by what you do, but you make a life by what you give. Dr. Dubin s children having fun at the beach 9

HINMAN DENTAL SOCIETY MEMBERSHIP MEETING Lecture Topic: Airway-adapted Occlusion and Airway-produced Malocclusion: A Biologic Perspective Occlusal theories are man-made mechanical constructs designed to increase restorative predictability. After 50 years of debate, there is still no agreed on ideal occlusal philosophy. This lecture will argue that one reason for the confusion is that occlusal principles are based on mechanical assumptions and not biologic realities. One example is centric relation. It is embraced because of the mechanical ease of transfer from articulator to mouth even though it is seldom found biologically. Dr. Rouse will attempt to explain common modes of tooth damage and reconstruction break down through biology rather than engineering. The three central pattern generators controlling breathing, chewing and swallowing will be highlighted along with factors that can prevent those CPGs from functioning in harmony. Malocclusions can minimize the oral volume, alter the chewing pattern and provide an increased opportunity for wear and fracture. The lecture will also focus on the bidirectional nature of airway impingement and dental malocclusion. Attendees will be able to: 1. Understand how management of the airway is key to functional patterns 2. Identify the central pattern generators and their impact on function 3. Explain why the rat and cow patterns of wear develop 4. Discuss how food volume and type impacts a consistent chewing pattern 5. Recognize an airway-produced malocclusion MEETING REGISTRATION FORM Name: AGD# o Member o Spouse o Staff o Guest Name: AGD# o Member o Spouse o Staff o Guest Name: o Member o Spouse o Staff o Guest Name: o Member o Spouse o Staff o Guest Please complete this form with your name as you would like it to appear on your badge and mail it with your check by Wednesday, September 16.
