2 President s Message Fall is Here Pat Yancey, III Thank you to everyone who attended our membership meeting on September 15. I also would like to welcome our new members and encourage you to become involved in our society. We have a wonderful organization where you will make many friends if you involve yourself. The more you give of your time and energy to Hinman, the more benefits you will reap in the development of relationships with fellow dentists and gaining knowledge through the continuing education we provide. Scott De Rossi of Georgia Regents University gave an excellent presentation in September with a broad review of oral medicine. He Hinman Dental Society Officers President Patrick H. Mohme 2015 Bruce Ashendorf (CH) reminded us that our patient population is aging and brings with them complicated medical histories. Scott explained the role that dentists may play in diagnosing potential medical problems as we see many patients that do not seek medical care. Thank you to the hospitality committee (Chairmen: Kristina Dawson, Brett Schroeder and Taz Elkasrawy) for their work to make our membership meeting run smoothly. Our next meeting will be on November 17, 2014 at the Ritz-Carlton Buckhead at 4:30pm. Please mark your calendars. We will serve a buffet dinner, which will be excellent. Our speaker will be Wenche Borgnakke, who is on staff at the University of Michigan. Wenche is quite knowledgeable about the microbiology of the mouth. Do not worry, this is not a microbiology lecture. I heard Wenche speak at a dental meeting sponsored by Quintessence on the oral-systemic connection. In my opinion, Wenche is an entertaining speaker who is very knowledgeable on this subject. She loves her work and is very enthusiastic. We toil with the microbes of the mouth everyday and she will give us some insights about how to treat them. I would like to thank Bruce Ashendorf, Chairman of the Trustees, and the Board of Trustees for their generous financial support for our membership meetings and our activities throughout the year. Our membership meetings are a true bargain, so take advantage of them. Everyone should be on a committee for our meeting in March, Every member is expected to volunteer at least eight hours at the meeting. It is a wonderful way to make contacts, renew friendships, earn continuing education credits and a great break from the daily grind of our dental work. Our members are what make our organization so great. Lastly, we need to support Dave Lee, Chairman of our March 2015 meeting, and help to make his meeting our best Hinman ever. Dave and his program chairmen, Paul Isler and Jonathan Dubin, have worked many hours to arrange the speakers for our March meeting. I would like to finish by thanking Sylvia Ratchford and the Hinman staff, as they are incredible. They are the oil on the wheel that makes Hinman run. Our theme is Foundation for the Future, and our program chairs Drs. Paul Isler and Jonathan Dubin have put together a fabulous program. We have 30 new speakers this year, in addition to our great group of returning speakers, hands on classes and fast-paced classes with three 50 minute speakers. We believe that the future of dentistry is great, and we ve committed a significant portion of our program to GOLD, Graduates Of the Last Decade. Please take a look at the schedule for our Friday GOLD program. It is a class with a tremendous group of speakers presenting the keys to success in dentistry, and especially addressing the challenges and rewards of successful private practice for young dentists. All of the GOLD speakers will also be presenting classes on Saturday to expand the information given in the Friday program. Many of you are already helping create sponsorships for young dentists to attend, and we will continue to seek your help for their success and the success of dentistry. Some senior dental students at GRU asked if we could create an opportunity at Hinman where young dentists could meet practice owners looking for potential associates or partners. So we ve created a program on Saturday for Professional Connections. It s based on a speed dating format where you have multiple ten minute sessions to meet potential business associates in a convenient, efficient and comfortable environment at the Hinman meeting. Look for more details in the pre-registration brochure. We re continuing the trend from Dr. Brian Carpenter s meeting last year of collaboration with our Lab Technicians. We have several classes dedicated to your clinical success with a dentist and a lab technician presenting together in a single, fast-moving lecture. From CAD CAM to removables, to all on four implant cases and successful anterior porcelain esthetics, you will receive valuable information on the foundations of success from chair side to the lab bench, and back to your patient. Please share your registration materials with your lab technicians, and let them know that in addition to the Friday dentist/ lab tech collaborations, we also have a full Lab Day program on Saturday. Four great Lab Techs speaking 90 minutes each in an efficient and informative program. We ve got some other great programing that I don t have room to cover here, so look for it in your Pre-Registration Brochure when it arrives in December. The real success of Hinman is you, the members. Our committee chairmen will be contacting you soon for the many roles you play in the success of our meeting. If you already know where you would like to serve, contact the Hinman office and place your request, because one of the benefits of serving at the March meeting is attending the black tie event on Thursday night. You will want to be there as we gather in the new College Football Hall of Fame. Thank you for all you do, and for helping create a Foundation for the Future. Nominating Committee Meeting Nominating committee chairman, Jane Puskas, announces that the committee will meet January 15, 2015 at the Hinman Executive Office. If you would like to submit a name for nomination, please contact one of the following members: Robert Towe, Max Ferguson, Dan Dunwody, Randy Phillips, Robby Robinson, Evis Babo or Pat Yancey. 3

6 Exhibits News Loyal Subjects Each year the Hinman Exhibits Committee makes improvements to the exhibits floor. This year is not unlike any other. This year we are focusing our efforts to give the tools to the exhibitors to help them succeed and remain loyal to Hinman. For the first time ever, we started accepting booth applications for 2015 at the 2014 meeting. This yielded us a 60% return exhibitor rate as early as March 29, To encourage them to apply to exhibit, we offered an additional Priority Point if they applied prior to the close of the meeting. Priority Points are how exhibitors rank during booth assignments. The Priority Point structure is a coveted bargaining chip across all of the dental meetings. We ve improved our priority point system giving exhibitors the opportunity to gain more points for better positioning on the exhibit floor, which makes for very happy exhibitors. And as you can imagine, happy exhibitors means loyal exhibitors, resulting in a quality exhibitor group for you, the doctor. Currently the exhibit floor is 80% sold and applications continue to come in. As we strive to maintain a loyal exhibitor following, we also strive to create a loyal attendee following. We ve heard over and over again how wonderful the Hinman attendees are from exhibitors. They love to come to Hinman to do business with their loyal customers and to enjoy the Hinman Experience as a whole. So, save your purchases for the 2015 Hinman exhibitors and help continue to build the loyalty. A loyal exhibitor following creates a competitive exhibit floor which results in great pricing and opportunity for the loyal attendee. 7 HINMAN Member Corner Hinman Welcomes New Member Dentists to Society The Hinman Dental Society s membership continues to grow. Every year, the Society welcomes a number of new members. Our newest members found out about the society through a variety of different ways, but are all excited about their membership and to represent an organization with such high standards and reputation. Some of our newest members share their past history with Hinman, dentistry and also what they enjoy doing in their spare time. Dr. Cameron Howard Dr. Howard has been practicing endodontics for four years. He learned about Hinman through several different referring general dentists that he met when setting up his practice, including his mentor, Dr. Harold Enoch. In his spare time, he enjoys gardening and spending time with his wife and two year old son. Dr. John Sieweke Dr. Sieweke has been practicing 34 years at his private practice in Covington. He attended his first Hinman meeting in 1976 at the Marriott as a dental student when he was asked to change slides for speakers. He enjoys being outdoors and in nature, hunting, fishing, golf and traveling when he has free time. Dr. Suzanna Aguilera Dr. Aguilera attended her first Hinman meeting in 2008 and learned about the society from Drs. Dan Dunwody and Mayoor Patel, who spoke very highly of the organization. When not practicing dentistry, she can be seen spending time with her husband and two year old, dancing, running and traveling. Dr. Kisha Carter Dr. Carter has seen the dental community from two perspectives, both as a dental assistant and a practicing dentist since She aspired to be a member once she saw how the Hinman Dental Society has supported and provided for the dental community, locally and nationally. She enjoys spending time with her husband and two year old son, traveling, running and photography. Dr. Michael Davenport Dr. Davenport s first Hinman meeting was when he was a resident at MUSC in He now works part time at GRU and his colleagues were very impressed with the Society and he wanted to take part. In his free time, he enjoys water and snow skiing, golfing and painting. Dr. Taz Elkasrawy Dr. Elkasrawy has been practicing dentistry in Georgia for two years and learned the ins and outs of the society from Dr. Dave Lee. He wanted to become a member because of the strong emphasis on the development and engagement of young dentists and new members and jumped right in to get involved, serving as a co-chairman of the Hospitality committee this year. Dr. Jonathan Johnson Dr. Johnson has been in private practice for one year and first attended the Hinman meeting in He states, The strong camaraderie that was evident among the Society members, the support for organized dentistry, and the progression of dental education are the values that drew [him] to the Hinman Society. 8 Member SPOTLIGHT ARTICLE All in the family Accounts from Hinman member spouse teams, part 1 Hinman members come from a variety of different locations and backgrounds. The society is lucky to have several spouse dentist teams working together in everyday life and also enjoying & working at Hinman functions. This article is part one of a two part series that shares the story of some of those couples and what having another dentist around the house is like. Drs. Michael & Azita Mansouri Members of Michael and Azita s family made plans for them to meet at a Starbucks to discuss job opportunities in Atlanta since Azita had just moved to the city. To make a long story short, Azita found a job opportunity and they found each other. They have been married for seven years and practice together. As dentists, they understand each other and have a lot of common interests. One challenge they face is bringing their work home and talking about dentistry too much at the house. They enjoy traveling together and spending their free time with their eight month old daughter, Lena. Drs. Miles & Anthea Mazzawi Miles & Anthea met at an ASDA meeting in Boston, where Miles was a rising senior at MCG and Anthea was a sophomore at the University of Florida. They have been married five and a half years and have a pediatric dental practice in Canton. They consider it a blessing to share [their] professional careers and enjoy the ups and downs of dentistry as a team. Anthea stated one of the most frustrating things about working together is their 30 minute commute, where she likes to chat and he enjoys some quiet time. Some of their favorite things to do together include, traveling, hiking, college football Saturdays, church on Sundays and hanging out with their family and friends. Mostly, they enjoy spending time as a family with their twin daughters, Anne & Mary, and their labs, Coal & Duke. Drs. Jim & Elaine Whitney Believe it or not, Jim & Elaine met at the Case Western Reserve University Library where Elaine was looking for an apartment message board & Jim made up an apartment listing to approach Elaine. Then the rest was history! They have been married 35 years and have many great memories of dental school, the hours of studying, ramen noodles and the late nights. As the years have gone by, their children have complained about models at the dinner table and it s a family rule that there is no discussion of treatment plans before the morning coffee! They now work together after 28 years of practice. Jim retired from his orthodontic office after a lymphoma diagnosis, and he is now two years cancer free and practicing with Elaine, which they have both enjoyed. They both like spending time with their daughters and have a travel bucket list, which included celebrating their 35th wedding anniversary in Paris this past summer. Drs. Michael & Lindsay Pope Michael & Lindsay met in dental school at the University of Alabama, Birmingham in They were friends first, enduring the many pressures of college together, including setting each other up on dates with their friends. By the end of the first year, they ended up dating, end of the second year they were engaged, end of the third year, they were married. The Popes have been married for 15 years. They moved to Peachtree City after graduation and in 2002 started a private practice of their own. They had two children, and Lindsay became a part time dentist to devote time to raising their children. Lindsay says, We work together very well, and in our differing strengths, are able to support one another as dental colleagues, business partners and spouses. Outside of dentistry, they enjoy their roles of parents, following the Crimson Tide football team, serving others at church and working in their yard. One of their favorite activities each year is working together at Hinman. They can usually be found guiding the weary travelers at an Information booth. 8

As well, the general inflammatory host response elicited by these microbes will be illustrated. Finally, recommendations regarding how to apply this knowledge in every day clinical work and incorporate these topics in conversations with patients will be suggested.
