Hinman Dental Meeting was Aiming for Excellence last month when the meeting attracted 20,772 dentists, hygienists, assistants, students and other dental professionals as well as industry personnel to the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta. Hinman 2014 featured 63 world-class dental experts; 230 courses, including 71 hands-on participation courses; all-day educational tracks for dentists, hygienists, assistants, and office staff; and 427 companies demonstrating the latest in dentistry. Dr. Brian Carpenter, General Chairman; Dr. Eddie Pafford, Program Chairman; and Dr. Jane Puskas, President and Program Chairman, assembled the best of the best this year. Hinman sold out its exhibit hall, which hosted a Hinman Treasure Quest and daily prize giveaways. The Keynote Session was one of the best attended in recent years and featured Dr. Benjamin Carson, who filled the Sidney Marcus Auditorium. Hinman 2014 attracted a total of 5,537 dentists, 4,143 dental hygienists and 2,930 dental assistants. Some of the most popular courses included Mr. David Meinz s Energize Your Life! drawing 1,367 attendees, and Rachel Wall s The Hygiene Profits Systems: The Five Essential Steps to Elevating Hygiene Service, Systems and Profits, which attracted 1,300 people. Of the paid courses, Hygiene, Health and Happiness drew the most participants with 891 in attendance and Dr. Gordon Christensen s Ninety Highly Useful Tips in Three Hours, filled the room with 635 attendees. Georgia 10 Many took part in the Dental Student Networking Reception and panel discussion held on Friday afternoon. Twenty-six colleges and universities were represented at the reception. At the Scholars Luncheon held during the meeting, Hinman awarded 91 students with scholarships. 2 President s Message The Real Benefits of the Hinman Dental Society Jane Puskas I am so proud and appreciative of our members for their countless hours of service to make this Hinman Dental Meeting so successful whether it be for arriving early with a smile on your face to serve as clinic captain or information guru, for hosting our speakers with that Southern hospitality, for representing our society so well amidst the 21,000 attendees, or for just saying yes when we asked for your help. Our members are the secret ingredient that makes the Hinman Dental Society so special. I was honored and humbled to stand before the huge audience at the Keynote as the first female president in the 102 year history of the Hinman Dental Society. It is fabulous that the Society has formally joined the ranks of great professional organizations that recognize and welcome dedicated women in the highest leadership roles. Dr. Ben Carson was inspirational as he shared a similar message that in our American society, success and advancement in any aspect of life should depend on commitment, a conscientious work ethic and character, regardless of gender or race. May PREVIEW Dr. Thomas P. Hinman established our legacy of attracting the best speakers in the profession to introduce dental advances and innovations to improve patient care. Through the great success of the Hinman Dental Meeting, the Society continues to support dental education. I am proud to report that in the last five years alone, the Hinman trustees have awarded over five million dollars in grants for dental education. In fact, the Society just received the very prestigious William J. Gies Award for Vision, a preeminent recognition of exceptional contributions to and support of dental education. Dr. Hinman would be very proud. As great as its contributions are to dental education, the Hinman Dental Society provides so much more for its members. My journey through the Society illustrates how special Hinman is for its members. I became a member in This network helped me become quickly established in the Atlanta dental community. I had the incredible good fortune of meeting a Hinman member, Dr. Harold Lanier, and buying his practice. The Society provided this newcomer to Atlanta an incredible network of colleagues those to cover my practice and help me treatment plan challenging cases, and even friends to give me advice about schools in Atlanta. My husband and three children also benefited from getting involved with Hinman and attending the annual meeting. Jillian and Caroline always looked forward to horseback riding. As much as we invest our time and energy in the service of Hinman, Hinman returns to its members, and to our wonderful profession, so much more. 2

3 General Chairman s Message 102nd Hinman Best Ever Brian Carpenter Words can not describe how pleased I am with the 102nd Thomas P. Hinman Dental Meeting. As General Chairman, it was impressive to watch our society come together like no other meeting in the country and exemplify Dr. Hinman s dream. I thank all the committee chairmen, members and hosts who worked so hard to do what we do best at Hinman! The meeting was a huge success in many ways. While some financial records were set, my goal was always to have a program that was diverse and of the highest caliber, and we achieved that goal. The Hinman Staff continually makes all of us look great and, quite simply, they are the best! The Keynote and Dentist Reception were superb and there is nothing about this meeting I would have changed. I sincerely thank the society for allowing me to serve as your General Chairman, but most importantly I thank my wife Pam for her unconditional love and support through this process. I look forward to seeing everyone at the Annual Meeting. 6 Hinman Receives Gies Award for Outstanding Vision The Hinman Dental Society was the proud recipient of the Gies Award for Outstanding Vision as a Public or Private Partner at the Awards Ceremony on March 17 in San Antonio, Texas. The Gies Awards, named after dental education pioneer William J. Gies, Ph.D., honor individuals and organizations exemplifying dedication to the highest standards of vision, innovation and achievement in dental education, research and leadership. The Gies Awards are presented by the ADEAGies Foundation, the philanthropic arm of ADEA (American Dental Education Association). For more than 50 years, the ADEAGies Foundation has enhanced the oral health of the public through programs that support dental education, research, leadership and recognition. and dental education, and it is an honor to recognize the dental educators and academic institutions that are making significant advances within the field. Each year, I am increasingly impressed with the innovation and progress exhibited through the achievements of the William J. Gies Awards winners, says Richard W. Valachovic, D.M.D., M.P.H., President of the ADEAGies Foundation and President and CEO of ADEA. IN MEMORIAM Dr. Tom Masters February 16, 2014 MESSAGES TO OUR MILITARY This year s postcard campaign at the Meeting produced 1,600 cards to be sent to troops overseas and a $1,300 donation to the USO Georgia branch. 8 Member Spotlight Article DENTISTRY ACROSS THE GENERATIONS ACCOUNTS FROM SECOND GENERATION HINMAN MEMBER DENTISTS PART 2 The Hinman Dental Society membership is unique; there are many backgrounds, locations and histories within the group. This article is part two of a two-part series highlighting dental families spanning multiple generations. Chris Brady, Father Gordon Brady Leslie McGuinn, Father Bob McGuinn Leslie said that, growing up around my father as a dentist taught me that helping other people was important. Her father s office was less than a mile from their house, so she was always in and out of the office after school. Leslie first became interested in the field during high school when she would help out in the summer. Leslie grew up attending Hinman meetings with her dad and saw how the profession of dentistry was continually changing and always had new challenges. Hinman allowed her to see how dentists are a close group and become part of your family and close friends. Becoming a dentist has been even more rewarding since it has allowed her to share the same experiences with her Dad. Jeff Kendrick, Father Ken Kendrick Jeff had the opportunity to work at his father s office, at a young age, cleaning rooms. He enjoyed being with his dad and making money and described the office as the come look over my shoulder practice. Jeff also enjoyed going to GDA and Hinman meetings for their family vacations. Jeff went to the University of Alabama for dental school and he and his wife, Sherry moved back to Fayetteville where they grew up. He started his residency in his Dad s practice and enjoyed having a mentor to bounce ideas off of every day. Since he joined the practice, Ken has been able to cut back and travel. Jeff was very fortunate to have his father in the practice when he had a serious accident (with a chainsaw and an oak tree) 4 years ago. He was able to keep the practice going at a level that would feed both of us. His dad s enjoyment in his work is what gave Jeff the bug to be a dentist. He always says dentistry is not really working. If you want to really work, just go out and dig a ditch! Chris has fond memories of his dad doing model surgery at home at night and weekends, and describes his dad s work and family life as being intertwined in such a positive way. He realizes now that the extra hours he put in at home were so that he could be around for activities and everyday moments with me and my sisters, and he noted that Gordon was always able to attend baseball games or recitals. When choosing to be a dentist, Chris was encouraged that his dad was excited about his work each day and realized that most of Chris s role models and people he looked up to were dentists. This made Chris excited and comfortable with the decision to begin a career in dentistry, as well. The Bradys attended countless Hinman meetings and Chris has friends today that he has known since early childhood, when he would see them at Annual Meetings. Some of his most vivid memories of Hinman are at Callaway Gardens where my parents were in charge of the children s activities for many years. Chris is excited about the opportunity for his daughters to enjoy the positive environment at the Annual Meetings and continuing the Hinman legacy in his family. 8

The statement was approved as follows (Newsom/Schulman): Beginning Balance: $ 29, Income: $ 33, Expenses: $ 6, Balance: $ 56, HINMAN 2014: Executive Director Sylvia Ratchford gave some meeting highlights, including the GC&P Party at the Georgia Aquarium and the New Member luncheon that will take place Friday at noon. She also announced that the Hinman was the winner of the Gies award and expressed appreciation to Drs. Carole Hanes and Connie Drisko for the nomination. General Chairman Brian Carpenter thanked the staff and his program chairmen for their work on the pre-registration brochure. He announced that registration numbers were up slightly over last year. He spoke on several meeting highlights, including keynote speaker, Dr. Ben Carson. HINMAN 2015: Chairman-elect Dave Lee thanked his program chairs. He also said he was impressed with the 2014 program and was supporting Dr. Carpenter s efforts. HINMAN 2016: Vice Chairman-elect Jim Roos team is just getting started scouting and is supporting Brian. ADVISORY: Upcoming meeting is January 28. TRUSTEES: Chairman Paul Isler recently went to UNC for Alumni Weekend and was wellreceived. Much appreciation was expressed for the recent endowed chair gift. OLD BUSINESS: None. NEW BUSINESS: Ticket sales for Hinman s Big Raffle were encouraged. Proceeds will be given to the Trustees to support dental education. MEMBERSHIP REPORT: There was a motion made and approval to go into executive session (Newsom/O Donnell). There was a motion made and approval to come out of executive session (Yancey/O Donnell). The slate was approved for membership (O Donnell/Puskas). MEMBERSHIP NEWS: Dr. Clayton Davis reported the following: John Barnes is recovering nicely from his heart surgery. Jim Anderson passed away on November 18. Connie Drisko was diagnosed with cancer and requires a bone marrow transplant. Pete Trager was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer. Hugh Mazzawi was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. Hinman staff member, Laura Pope, lost her grandmother recently in a house fire. REMARKS: The nominating committee will meet on January 9. Forward any names to be considered onto the committee. She thanked the Madow Brothers for their engaging lecture and presented them with their honorarium and plaque. She thanked the hospitality committee & chairman, Dr. Jim Granade, III for their help. Dr. Puskas also thanked the Trustees for all of their generous subsidies. Dr. Puskas reminded the members to pay their 2014 dues. Finally, Dr. Puskas introduced Hinman intern, Amy Shepard. EXHIBITS: Exhibits Committee Co-Chairman Bruce Ashendorf went over some floor highlights, including messages to the military, wheel of chance, dentist-only hours and the treasure quest. The winners of the Hinman cash were Wallace Lail & Grant Hogan. MINUTES: Secretary Bob O Donnell presented the minutes from the November Executive Council and November Membership Meeting as printed in the January Hinman Preview Review. Both sets of minutes were approved (Kerr/ Anderson). FINANCIAL REPORT: Treasurer Kate Robinson presented the following Society YTD financial report as presented at the January 7th Executive Council meeting: Beginning Balance: $ 29, Income: $ 33, Expenses: $ 6, Balance: $ 56, The financial report was approved (Long/Roos). MEMBERSHIP REPORT: Assistant Secretary/ Treasurer Roy McDonald presented the following prospective members for approval: Drs. Frank Benson, Moataz Elkasrawy, Nadia Esfandiarinia, Delores Hubbard-Brooks, Colin Lentz, Anna Schultz, Janet Hiers Sieweke, John Sieweke and Nancy Young. The slate was approved (O Donnell/Smith). All new members were invited to the front of the room for pictures with President Puskas. Sponsors were invited to join the group as well. ANNUAL MEETING REPORT: Chairman David Anderson stated the annual meeting will take place June 13-15, 2014 at the Jekyll Island Club Hotel. One nights stay and members registration will be covered by the trustees again this year. You can book your room on their website or by calling their reservations department. HINMAN 2014: General Chairman Brian Carpenter announced that registration numbers were up. He also covered some program highlights, including speaker-pairing courses, new special events, keynote speaker Dr. Ben Carson and the GC&P at the Aquarium. The new Beachfront Convention Center offers beautiful spaces and spectacular views of the ocean. At the 2014 Hinman annual meeting, there will be an array of fun activities. Whether horseback riding on the beach, taking a Segway, dolphin or historic tour or exploring the marsh by kayak, there is truly something for everyone to enjoy! The Trustees have graciously granted a free standard room night and complimentary registration for each Hinman member who attends the annual meeting. ACTIVITIES AVAILABLE THROUGHOUT THE WEEKEND Bike Rentals are available on a limited basis through the hotel front desk at a rate of $10+tax for a ½ day rental. Make a splash at Summer Waves, Jekyll s water park! Admission prices range from $10.95 to $19.95 for a day pass. Event 1 - Segway Tour 1A Friday, 1 to 4 p.m. 1B Saturday, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. 1C Sunday, 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Leave from the North Beachview Drive mini-golf parking area Cost: $85 per person, includes gratuity (limited to 6 per session) Tour the maritime forest on the south end of beautiful Jekyll Island while gliding along on an eco-friendly Segway. The educated guide provides instruction on Segway use, and then takes you through the paths to wonderful vistas, pointing out the plant and animal life as you stop to observe the sights. You must be at least 14 years old and weigh between pounds to participate. Tour guests under 18 years old must be accompanied by an adult. Accommodations Trustees will pay for one night s room and tax for all Hinman members. Mention the Hinman Dental Block to get the rate/ availability mentioned below. Rooms can be booked at the Hampton Inn on the island at a rate of $189 for a room with two queens and $209 for a king suite (that includes a sleeper sofa). Reservations can be made by calling by May 19th. Another option available is an oceanfront room at the Days Inn at a rate of $161 per night. Reservations can be made by calling by May 13th. Due to overwhelming popularity, the block at the Jekyll Island Club Hotel has sold out. You can request to be added to the wait list, but in the meantime, be sure to make a reservation at another property. Rooms rates are $200 per night for a standard room and $300 for a suite (plus a $10 resort fee per day). There will be a talent competition, as well. Contestants will compete for fabulous Apple prizes (including an ipad Mini) and the Hinman Idol title is at stake! We are looking for all types of talent to perform in the Hinman Idol competition. All ages are welcome. Event 2B - Hinman Casino Crane Cottage For the first time ever, we are bringing the fun of a casino to you! Try your hand at black jack, roulette, poker or craps. You must be 18 to attend this event. There will be a drawing for prizes at the end of the night, so play to win big! SATURDAY, JUNE 14 All events on Saturday leave from the Jekyll Island Club Hotel. Event 3 - Fun Run 3A 7:30 a.m. 5K run/walk 3B 7:30 a.m. 1K run/walk Meet at the front drive of the Hotel Cost: none Participants may walk or run and both adults and kids may participate in either run! The Hinman Fun Run is a great way to start off the day and see some of the historic sites on the island. Fresh fruit, water and juice will be available. Event 4 - Fishing 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Meet in the Aspinwall Room at 7:45 a.m. to carpool to the marina Cost: $110 per person, includes gratuity Enjoy a morning of fishing with one of Jekyll s best! Captain Vernon will lead the group to some of the island s best fishing spots. Instruction will be provided for beginners. This excursion includes soft drinks, bottled water, all fishing supplies and necessary license and permit fees. Event 5 - Golf 8 a.m. Meet in the Aspinwall Room at 7:45 a.m, to carpool to the course Cost: $48 per person Pine Lakes is a veritable masterpiece that meanders through ocean forests and undisturbed hammocks populated by migratory birds. Pine Lakes golf course was completely renovated in When renovated, new lakes, bunkers and redesigned greens made Pine Lakes an island favorite. Club rental is available, please inquire for details. Event 6 - Guided Kayaking 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Meet in the Aspinwall Room at 8:15 a.m. to carpool to the 4-H Center Cost: 6A- $65 single, 6B- $110 tandem (cost for 2 people), includes gratuity Head over to the 4-H Tidelands Nature Center for a crab s eye view of Jekyll s tidal creeks and get the chance to see shorebirds, fiddler crabs, dolphins, as well as the occasional manatee! The guides are experienced environmental educators who will share the secrets of the ecology of the Marsh environment. Suitable for all skill levels. Must be at least 8 years old to participate. Event 7 - Kids Program A parent should meet in the Club Ballroom with the child to sign a waiver for the program Cost: 7A (9a.m.- 4p.m.)- $95 (includes lunch) 7B (9a.m.- 12p.m.)- $45 (does not include lunch) The Kids Program is for kids ages 3-12 (must be potty trained). Kids will enjoy an array of fun activities, including arts and crafts, a tour of the sea turtle center, movie time on the big screen and an afternoon hayride! Event 8 - Sea Turtle Center Guided Tour 9 to 10 a.m. Meet in the Aspinwall Room (left of bell stand) at 8:45 a.m. to walk to the center Cost: 8A- $8 per child (12 & under), 8B- $9 per senior (65+), 8C- $10 per adult Join us for an educator-facilitated tour of the Georgia Sea Turtle Center, the only hospital of its kind in the state of Georgia. The tour will also include a meet the patients program where visitors can see some of the turtles in the hospital. Event 9 - Horseback Riding 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Meet in the Aspinwall Room at 9:10 a.m. to carpool to the stables Cost: $80 (includes gratuity) Take a trail ride through the maritime forest, see the salt marsh and return on the beautiful driftwood beach. Gentle, well-trained horses and experienced guides insure a fun-filled ride for everyone. You must be at least 7 years old to ride and there is a 250 lb. weight limit. Closed-toe shoes, long pants, a hat and sunglasses are recommended. Event 11 - Dolphin Tour 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Meet in the Aspinwall Room at 10:40 a.m. to walk/carpool to the marina Cost: 11A- $22 per adult (11 & up), 11B- $12 per youth (age 3-10), 11C- Children ages 0-2 are free (includes gratuity) Join a fully narrated 90 minute dolphin/sightseeing tour from the Jekyll Wharf as you travel the scenic waterways of beautiful Jekyll Island to observe the magnificent bottlenose dolphins feeding, playing or simply cruising about in their natural habitat while you learn about their social behavior, feeding habits and much more. Event 12 - Beach Olympics Participant 2 to 4 p.m. Take the hotel shuttle to the beach pavilion Show your true team spirit by competing in our Hinman Beach Olympics! Teams will compete for fun prizes. Cocktails will be available for participants and also for spectators as they cheer on their favorite team. This event is free to participate. Please indicate your interest in joining a team when registering. Saturday Night Dinner and Party, 6 to 10 p.m. Jekyll Island Convention Center Lawn Plan to enjoy a night under the stars, complete with a beach breeze, with all of your Hinman friends. There will be a live band, dancing and many fun activities for the kids. The menu will include: Georgia fried chicken, tilapia, beef stroganof, a variety of southern sides and many delectable desserts. A kids buffet will also be provided. SUNDAY, JUNE 15 Annual Meeting Business Meeting, 8 a.m. Club Ballroom, Jekyll Island Club Hotel All Hinman members are encouraged to attend this meeting for the approval & installation of the officers. His daughter had a baby girl on January 22. John Barnes is recovering nicely from his heart surgery. Jack Bickford was recently diagnosed with cancer and is undergoing chemo. Jim Anderson passed away on November 18. Connie Drisko was diagnosed with cancer and requires a bone marrow transplant. NEW HINMAN MEMBERS January 2014 Pete Trager was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer. Hugh Mazzawi passed away on January 18. Hinman staff member, Laura Pope, lost her grandmother recently in a house fire. PRESIDENT S REMARKS: President Puskas reminded everyone to have their parking ticket validated. She then asked that everyone turn in their badge at the end of the cocktail reception. The winners of the gift card drawings were Karyn Stockwell and Sherry Padgett.
