2 Introduction While homeschooling my own children I felt a real need for a history curriculum that incorporated text book facts with historical fiction and hands on projects. I wanted it to be easy for parents to implement. It is mainly student directed. They can easily see what pages are to be read each day and do the work required. I would recommend looking through the lesson plans ahead of time so that you can be prepared. There is a recommendation for doing an Ancient China project further along in the program. This really helps to get the kids excited about history; when they have a little mystery of their own to uncover. Some options include creating a diorama of an Ancient China scene, rebuilding the Great Wall of China (with a kit or with available materials and imagination!), starting your own silkworm farm or creating your own clay Terra Cotta soldiers! I would recommend a project that takes several different sittings to complete. This helps promote a real sense of completion. There is also an individual book report that needs to be done during this course, starting in Lesson 23. This is an opportunity to let the student pick something interesting to them that is related to this time frame. They can choose a historical fiction book or a biography. They could do a correlation of bible dates and Chinese history dates. They could investigate a more specific topic such as: exact weaponry, a famous battle, or some other topic of interest. The purpose of this particular exercise is to help them develop a deeper understanding and further appreciation of this time period. If your student is using multiple books for study on a specific topic you may wish to have them write down a little that they have learned from each book or a research style paper. I hope your student and you find this course all encompassing and fun! This course was designed for 5-7th grade students. Strong 4th grade readers with an interest in history can also do this course quite well. 3
