3 8. Relate books to family activities and events--a vacation trip, a new pet, visiting a museum, etc. Mary Quattlebaum has written Underground Train about a trip on Metro s Red Line. REMEMBER: The public library offers many services, and they are free of charge! Most Montgomery County libraries have shelves of easy-to-read books with yellow tape on the bindings; many have Step-Up books marked with blue tape. Start with these; if they are too easy, ask the librarian for suggestions. Remember the five-finger test: read a whole page aloud and put a finger over every word that gives you trouble. (Proper names do not count.) If all five fingers go down, this is a book to have a grown-up read to you. This year you have read many books that have won the Caldecott Medal. Look for other works by the same illustrators, as well as books by authors you have studied - Aliki, Dr. Seuss, Else Homelund Minarik, David McPhail, and Bernard Waber. Aardema, Verna. 8 These are merely a short sampling of the treasures awaiting you at out local public libraries. The librarians at your branch may suggest other books by the authors listed or books I have not included there isn t room for everything in this book list. If your Montgomery County public library doesn t own something you want, ask the librarian about interlibrary loan. Barnes and Noble in Rockville and Gaithersburg, and Politics and Prose in Washington, D.C. frequently host children s authors and illustrators and have other interesting activities. Check Book World in the Washington Post on Sundays for coming events at the above stores. Children enjoy getting mail. Consider a subscription to a magazine (Highlights for Children; and the Cricket magazine group-spider) as a birthday, or end of year school gift. This type of reading prepares children for the type of reading most people do as adults. Choose magazines that reflect your family s hobbies and interests. Take into account ages and developmental levels. Practice throwing, catching, and jumping rope this summer. There are many books of games, songs, and rhymes for these activities on the Dewey Decimal Number 780 shelf at the library; nursery rhymes are near fairytales -Dewey Decimal Number HAVE A HAPPY SUMMER, READING!
