4 I Remember This Word! The student Writes the vocabulary word in the first column. Thinks of the common meaning of the word and write the meaning, in his/her own words, in the second column. Draws a picture (or symbol) that represents the word. Creates a sentence correctly using the word. If the child is only able to write the word and draw a picture, he/she can verbalize the meaning and sentence and have someone write it down for him/her. After completing the activity, the student can cut up the squares, put them in a container (envelope, box, etc.) and select and reassemble the word rows. Students can trade containers for additional word practice. Word Meaning Picture Sentence Speech Dynamics, Inc.

6 Mark My Words! Provide assistance for students who are reading in first grade. Excellent for children in higher grades encourage them to become Word Watchers! The overt objective is for the child to write a word or words in each square of the grid. For example, they write words that start with A in the A square, and so on. The covert objective is for the child to learn to attend and watch for words and their meanings, as well determine which ones they know, and don t know, and continuously increase their vocabulary knowledge. Keep each page in a Mark My Words! notebook or file folder. You may ultimately have several pages. At the top of the grid, have them fill in the type of words the grid will contain (start with Words I know, or Words I don t know ), for example: Words I know Words I don t know but want to Words I have heard or seen, but don t know Words I like Words I think are fun Words I think are interesting Words I like to say Words I use when I talk Words in the Theme: When you read a story out loud, or put a story or article on the computer/lcd and read it, ask the students to get out their Mark My Words! book, and to watch for words to write in the grid. At the end of each activity or session, have them share their new word(s). The accumulation of words can take place over several months. To make more fun, offer a special prize for the person who fills up their Mark My Words! page(s) first, and is able to read them (and use them)!
