1 HAXL-PNI-40 NEW DANA SERVICE KITS AND PARTS FOR MODELS BUILT ON OR AFTER JUNE 10, 2013 PART NUMBER INFORMATION DATE: August 15, 2013 TO: All Dana Aftermarket Group Spicer Heavy Axle Customers Affected Models: D/R170, D/R190, D/R590, S170, S190, S590 Detailed in this bulletin are the new individual parts and service kits for the Dana models shown above. These axle models have been in production since JUNE 10, As previously communicated in Dana bulletin HAXL-PNI-39, various sections of these carriers have undergone major redesign changes, resulting in the release of new parts for service. Those details and important interchangeability facts between old design and new designs are also detailed below. A NEW Dana illustrated parts book for models produced ON or AFTER JUNE 10, 2013 is forthcoming. Refer to publication AXIP-0057A Models Produced ON or AFTER JUNE 10, The Current Dana illustrated parts list (IPL) AXIP-0057 has been updated and will only reflect service kits & parts that are used for the models produced BEFORE JUNE 10, The cover and individual pages also reflect a Made BEFORE JUNE 10, 2013 notation date to help minimize any confusion for customers when looking up part numbers either on line or when pages are downloaded. Pictured and highlighted on the next page are the specific sections of the carriers that were redesigned. Note: The picture on the next page is that of a D170, but the highlighted parts pictured are the general sections that represent the changes in all models. Dana New and Original design 170, 190 and 590 model service carriers as units are completely interchangeable. New service parts and kits for models made ON or AFTER JUNE 10, 2013 are different in design and are now available. 1 of 7

2 Each area of the model carriers highlighted below, were redesigned with production beginning ON or AFTER JUNE 10, The models now utilize the new design of individual part numbers and service repair kits. Each section below is detailed in this bulletin, including the new part numbers and kits along with important Interchangeability facts between OLD and NEW axle designs. Page 2 of 7

3 DIFFERENTIAL BEARINGS & ADJUSTERS and CARRIER SUB-ASSEMBLIES Dana redesigned the differential bearing adjusters from a one-piece Diff Adjuster & Brg Cup Assembly to a conventional 2-piece design. With this change, the Differential Bearing Cups & Cones along with the Diff Bearing Adjusters and Carrier Sub-Assy s are all new. New bearing kits are now released for the models produced ON or AFTER JUNE 10, INTERCHANGEBILITY FACTS: Differential Bearing Cups & Cones: Differential Adjusters: Carrier Sub-Assy: Mixing of OLD components and NEW components within a carrier will cause assembly issues and if put into service with the wrong mix of parts will ultimately cause premature failure to those components, the mating parts or the carrier. DO NOT MIX OLD & NEW DESIGN COMPONENT PARTS! 4 WHEEL DIFFERENTIAL PARTS & DIFFERENTIAL CASES Directly affected by the bearing adjuster redesign are the wheel differential parts and case halves. New design models now utilize four (4) side pinion thrust washers and two (2) side gear thrust washers that mate with new designed wheel differential cases. The new wheel diff case parts are dimensionally different to accommodate the thrust washers. New and old design parts must not be mixed. IMPORTANT NOTE: The new wheel differential cases are dimensionally different than the old designs do not attempt or force together OLD and NEW design differential case parts. To help avoid mixing of parts, be sure to identify the model design (BEFORE or AFTER JUNE ) prior to ordering replacement parts or trying to reassemble the parts. o o OLD DESIGN MODELS DO NOT USE SIDE GEAR OR SIDE PINION THRUST WASHERS. NEW DESIGN MODELS REQUIRE THE USE OF SIDE GEAR AND SIDE PINION THRUST WASHERS. INTERCHANGEBILITY FACTS: Differential Cases: Original and New design differential cases are not interchangeable. They are dimensionally different. Wheel Diff Thrust Washers: ONLY USED IN NEW DESIGN MODELS. The side gear thrust washers and side pinion thrust washers must only be used with NEW design carriers and NEW design differential case parts. Mixing of OLD design diff case components and NEW design components within a carrier will cause assembly issues and if put into service ultimately will cause premature failure to those components, the mating parts and carrier. 5 DIFFERENTIAL LOCK SHIFT PARTS In Diff Lock design models, Dana has moved to a single design shift fork and a uniquely designed mating sliding clutch gear. The previous design diff lock shift forks varied by ratio and diff case configuration. The diff lock shift fork and sliding clutch are both dimensionally different than the old design parts, making them unique to only working in NEW design carrier models.
