Outlaw (published in 2009) is the first book in the Outlaw Chronicles by Angus Donald. Outlaw is a gripping, action-packed historical thriller that delves deeply into the fascinating legend of Robin Hood. Anyone with this biography has to be an interesting fellow: Angus Donald was born in China and educated at Marlborough College and Edinburgh University. He has worked as a fruit-picker in Greece, a waiter in New York and as an anthropologist studying magic and witchcraft in Indonesia. For the past 20 years, he has been a journalist in Hong Kong, India, Afghanistan and London. 2

4 Talking Books News People with a visual impairment, a physical impairment, or a reading disability like dyslexia may now download audio and braille books to their iphone, ipad, or ipod touch thanks to the Library of Congress. The BARD (Braille and Audio Reading Download) Mobile app provides access to nearly 50,000 books, magazines, and music scores in audio and braille formats, with new selections added daily. With BARD Mobile, you can play the audio materials on your iphone, ipad, or ipod Touch. To read braille materials available on BARD, your device must be connected to a refreshable braille display through Bluetooth. Library materials are sent to your home through the mail. No postage is necessary to mail materials back. The Kansas Talking Book program is funded jointly by federal, state, and local tax dollars. If you have an Apple device, you have probably heard about the new ios 7. Apple CEO Tim Cook called ios 7 the most significant overhaul of Apple s mobile operating system since the company got into the smartphone business back in Here are some differences from ios 6. (Note: not all features will work on all devices. Check Apple s Website for details.) HOME SCREEN: Unlock by sliding anywhere on the screen instead of the bar at the bottom. CONTROL CENTER: Slide up from the bottom of any screen to access the Control Center which gives you instant access to most critical settings. NOTIFICATIONS: The notification bar is now split into three tabs: Today, All, and Missed. The Today tab includes information from the Calendar app, and stock and weather data from Yahoo. The Missed tab will show you notifications you've missed and haven't acted on yet. There's no longer a tappable widget that lets you update Twitter or Facebook from inside the notifications panel. SAFARI: There's a "back" gesture now: simply swipe from the left side of the screen to the right. Reverse that gesture to go forward a step. You can open more than nine browser tabs at once. To kill unwanted tabs, throw them off the left side of the screen. MULTITASKING: Double tap the home button and swipe up on any app you don t want open. SEARCH MY PHONE: Spotlight s moved from its traditional home on a separate home screen. To trigger searches pull from the center of the screen and drag your home screen downward. Spotlight no longer searches Google or Wikipedia, so you'll have to do that in Safari. IMPROVED APP UPDATES: The App Store provides more search options by age range and introduces a new section called Near Me, which allows the user to find out which apps are popular in their area. The App Store also supports automatic app updates. Prior to ios 7, the user had to initiate the update process. EMBIGGEN TEXT: New in ios 7 -- the ability to change the system-wide text size. You change your SMS text size by dragging the Text Size slider under the General category in the Settings app. BLOCK CALLERS: New in ios 7 -- To block a caller, add them to your Address Book. Find his or her contact, and scroll to the bottom. AUDIO FaceTime: For Apple users who hate videoconferencing, but want to make voice-over-ip calls, FaceTime now does audio. Using an internet connection instead of your minutes, Voice-Only FaceTime call is basically the equivalent of an imessage phone call. NEW RINGTONES: There's a new default sound for calls called Opening. In total, there are 13 new text tones and 25 new ringtones in ios 7.

At the beginning of this school year we started a new program, After-School Card Club, for older children and younger teens. The program has been a lot of fun so far, and I want to brag on how well these kids are doing so far! The aim of this club is to teach classic card games to kids and encourage the lost art of good conversation and friendly camaraderie that is created when a group of people sit down at a table together and play a game. So far, we ve learned the following games: Kings in the Corner, Fan Tan, Golf, Crazy Eights, Casino, Whist, and Hearts. By the end of the year, we are slated to learn Rummy, Gin Rummy, Hand & Foot, and Canasta. We ve increased the game complexity as we ve gone along, and the kids are doing a great job learning some new and tricky ideas. Mostly it s been young men who have joined the club, and they keep bugging me, When are we going to learn poker? So, maybe I ll have to put some kind of poker on our spring schedule no real money of course! While the program is a bit unconventional, it s been great fun and helps kids interact in a positive way with each other and takes them away from screen time for an extra hour! The club is open to all; each week s admission is $1 per person. Snacks are provided. Thursdays from 3:30-4:30. See our schedule for a few off weeks. 5
