2 YOU RE IN NEWCASTLE YOUR FORTNIGHTLY GUIDE TO WHAT S ON Happy New Year everyone! Hang on, I hear you say, isn t it a bit late for that? Well, that really depends on which calendar you re looking at. The Chinese New Year will be ushered in on January 31, so those of you who are not yet partied out will have an excuse to do it all over again. For many, the buzzword of 2013 was austerity, so you ll be pleased to discover that the forthcoming Year of the Horse is considered a harbinger of good luck and prosperity. And it s a racing certainty that anyone who heads down to the city s bustling Chinatown is in for a great time. We tell you how to make the most of the festivities in this issue. But even if China doesn t float your slow boat and February turns out to be as wet as Dry January, the coming fortnight is jam-packed with other unmissable treats for culture vultures, music fans and foodies alike. We feature celebrity chef Kenny Atkinson, a double Michelin star winner, following the launch of his latest venture, the intriguingly named House of Tides, and for those in the mood for love, we take a sneaky peak at what s in store on Valentine s Day. Now if that doesn t get you licking your lips, nothing will! 04 NEWS Upcoming happenings to scribble into your diary 06 CHINESE NEW YEAR FEATURE See in the Year of the Horse in style in NE1 08 LOVEY DOVEY DAY ROMANCE Keep yourself out of the dog house with these Valentine s Day ideas 09 TIDE TURNS FOR TOP CHEF EATING OUT Inside celeb chef Kenny Atkinson s new Newcastle joint PLUS All the highlights of the next two weeks your first stop shop for entertainment listings in Newcastle Editorial: Andrew Mernin/Ken Oxley If you wish to submit a listing for inclusion please listings@ne1magazine.co.uk For advertising call or sales@room501.co.uk Produced by room501 publishing on behalf of NE1 All contents copyright 2014 room501 Ltd. 3 NEWS NEWS STADIUM ROCK-OUTS, CULTURAL CHIT-CHAT AND CRACKING MEAL, MOVIE AND PARKING DEALS ARE JUST A FEW OF THE WONDERFUL THINGS WE VE GOT TO TELL YOU ABOUT THIS FORTNIGHT EAT OUT FOR LESS Be honest, how many of you made a New Year s resolution to catch up with old friends but haven t even got around to picking up the phone? Well, with NE1 s restaurant week only just underway, you have no excuse not to make that call. After all, when else can you enjoy a meal at one of the city s best restaurants for as little as 10 per head? No fewer than 60 establishments are taking part and the event runs until February 2. See co.uk for full details on how to get your teeth into the action. SHOCK N ROLL Like The Rocky Horror Show on acid is how Britain s Got Talent judge Amanda Holden described the Circus of Horrors. Sounds extreme, but then it does feature sword swallowers, dare devil balancing acts, hair hangers, demon dwarfs and a pickled person... so we can sort of see where she s coming from. The bizarre acts feature in the hit show London After Midnight, which visits the Mill Volvo Tyne Theatre on Tuesday 11 February. It s a macabre tale that takes its audience on a whirlwind journey though a plague ridden London in 1665 and culminates during the great fire of London in The gruesome tongue-in-cheek show stars shock rockers Dr Haze and The Interceptors From Hell, proving the devil really does have all the best tunes. WOR PITCH IS ON FIRE! As Newcastle and Sunderland prepare to thrash it out on the football field on February 1, the corporate movers and shakers at both clubs are embroiled in a very different contest... a battle of the bands. While Sunderland recently attracted big names like Bon Jovi and Rihanna, it s now game on for Newcastle who with a little help from NE1 have announced Kings of Leon will play St James Park on May 31. Stadium rock on Magpie turf has been a long time coming, the last concert being Rod Stewart back in But it s hoped the appearance of the multi Grammy and Brit award-winners will kick-start a music revival at the ground. Watch this space! Meanwhile, tickets are still available for the Tennessee rockers at BIG SCREEN FREEBIE With loads of top films on release including blockbusters 12 Years a Slave and American Hustle, you probably don t need an incentive to get down to The Gate. But, hey, everyone likes something for nothing. So several of the Gate s restaurants have teamed up to bring back one of their most popular deals... free parking with a film and food. See co.uk for participating venues. VIRAL VIDEO Watch with horror as a devil baby terrifies New York SCRATCH RETURNS A night out at the theatre is always a treat, but it doesn t have to be all formal and high-brow darling - especially when the audience is asked to stick around afterwards for a drink and a chat with the performers. That s the idea behind Northern Stage s Scratch Night, when brand new work from local theatre makers makes its debut. Audience members have an important role to play and are encouraged to hang around after the show to give feedback. Scratch Night is back on February AN UNLIKELY STORY! Nineteenth Century poet George Chatt once vented his spleen about the lack of hospitality in Elsdon, vowing never to return. Anyone visiting the quaint Northumberland village nowadays might find that hard to believe, but it does have a mysterious and, some might say, grisly past. Want to know more? Then drop in to Newcastle s Star and Shadow Cinema on Friday, February 7 to hear renowned storyteller Pascale Konyn wax lyrical about this little known corner of the North East. As part of the Tales of the Forgotten North Project, Pascale has created a story using the known archaeology, history and the existing mysteries of Elsdon and its landscape. Her epic wonder tale of the village and its transformations takes us from the Iron Age through Medieval times to the Nineteenth Century and the present day. BIRTHDAY BASH If you re struggling to crack a smile through January s icy grip, allow us to make a suggestion... The Suggestibles. The Newcastlebased improv comedy foursome you supply the suggestions, they supply the laughs have been tickling Tyneside ribs for a decade now. And to mark the occasion they re having a 10th birthday party back where it all started for them, at the Cumberland Arms in Ouseburn. For details of the event on 31 January visit MALL MAKEOVER Work is expected to start shortly on a plan to refurbish and redevelop two of the malls within intu Eldon Square shopping centre. Intu plans to create a destination dining quarter, providing 21 new catering units within the current Sidgate and High Friars malls. It will be a covered family dining space set over two levels, incorporating the Grade II listed facades and views over Old Eldon Square, Greys Monument and the Grainger Town Conservation Area. Phil Steele, general manager of intu Eldon Square, says: There is a huge demand for restaurant space in the city, and this will really enhance the environment for our shoppers. The work is due to be completed by Easter STEAMING BACK How many people, we wonder, claimed to have been at Newcastle music venue the Head of Steam when a little-known band called The Arctic Monkeys played there? As well as having an astonishing selection of draft and bottled beers, this unique city pub is a renowned stomping ground for up and coming artists. So there was understandable concern among devotees when the pub was sold to the big fish that is Camerons Brewery, along with sister pubs Tilley s and The Cluny. But it seems any fears were unfounded. The new owners have proudly declared that normal service has resumed with free entry to the live music venue and nightclub every Friday and Saturday. For details of upcoming events see tu n The best of the local gigs scene, with Metro Radio s Zoe Addison LOS COYOTE MEN Hey gringos! Have you ever seen gun slinging garage rockers Los Coyote Men on stage? Well if not, here s your final chance as this lauded local group gets together for its last ever gig. The Coyote Men will be appearing at Brew Dog in Newcastle on Thursday 30 January. Formed more than 17 years ago, the band are perhaps best recognised for the menacing Mexican wrestling masks they don on stage, concealing the members true identities. In this, the ultimate gig of their career, every masked member of the Coyote Men (past and present) will feature, ensuring that both old and new fans will not be disappointed. The Coyote Men s music is pure rock n roll raucousness, and is in their own words packed with danger and thrills. I think it must be something to do with this awesome anarchic punk spirit that entices in the crowds each and every time they play in NE1. With support from punk outfit Mansions of Glory, as well as The Exes it s set to be a cracking evening and I d urge anyone who s into their garage rock to arriba arriba ándale their way down to the gig! 4 FEATURE TIME TO PARTY CHINESE STYLE THE YEAR OF THE HORSE IS UNDER STARTER S ORDERS AS THE CITY COUNTS DOWN TO ONE OF THE BIGGEST, BOLDEST AND MOST COLOURFUL EVENTS ON THE CALENDAR CHINESE NEW YEAR It officially gallops in on January 31, but the main event takes place on Sunday, February 9. That s when thousands of people are expected in and around Chinatown for a day of free Chinese events and performances, including traditional crafts, dance, music, martial arts and food and drink. The popular dragon, lion and unicorn dances will once again animate the area around the ceremonial Chinese arch on Stowell Street. The festivities get underway at 11am and run until 4pm, with the ever popular dragon, lion and unicorn dances starting at about 12.30pm. NE1 s director of communications Stephen Patterson believes the celebrations are critically important not only to businesses, but also to the city s Chinese community. IT S A GREAT DAY OUT FOR THE FAMILY He said: After Christmas and New Year things can feel a little flat, but the Chinese New Year celebrations uplift everyone and add to the city centre experience. It ll be a hugely entertaining day for everyone, with loads going on for people of all ages. The dragon dance is a real spectacle and I would urge anyone who s never seen it to make sure they don t miss it this year. Carol Bell, head of culture and major events at NewcastleGateshead Initiative, said: Everyone can play a part in the celebrations and learn more about the fascinating culture and heritage of our Chinese residents. It really is a great day out for all the family. Other events and activities taking place on Sunday, February 9 include; a Chinese market and fairground (Bath Lane & Thornton Square), Chinese zodiac, calligraphy, calendar making and fortune telling (The Chinese Centre, Westgate Road), and a special children s marquee offering a range of traditional Chinese arts and crafts, including the chance to learn how to write your own name in Chinese (Thornton Square). QUICK JOKE I SUFFER FROM CDO. IT S LIKE OCD, BUT THE LETTERS ARE IN ALPHABETICAL ORDER, LIKE THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO BE! The Chinese New Year festival programme offers additional events and activities in the weeks leading to and from the official beginning of Chinese New Year. These events include Chinese Brush Painting Workshops (at Newcastle Arts Centre), Chinese storytelling and New Year s Eve party (from January 27 at Newcastle Library) and Busy B s Chinese decoration making for children (Sat and Sun February 8 and 9 at BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art). Tyne and Wear Archives & Museums have two Chinese New Year events taking place at Laing Art Gallery FEATURE (February 1) and Discovery Museum (February 8). This year also sees a very special Chinese New Year Grand Raffle with winning prizes including; return flights from Newcastle to Hong Kong (courtesy of Happy Travel) and to Taiwan (courtesy of Emirates Airlines), an ipad (courtesy of The Confucius Institute), a 200 voucher for Fujiyama and much more. Tickets cost 1 and will be on sale throughout Chinatown businesses during the celebrations. EVERYONE CAN PLAY A PART IN THE CELEBRATIONS For full details visit 6 7

That s right folks, this year the most important day on the lurve calendar marks the start of the weekend... so you have absolutely no excuse not to make the most it. But where to start? The number of restaurants across the city offering mouth-watering Valentine s Day menus are too numerous to mention. Our research reveals that most have put together tempting two or three-course offerings, and all at surprisingly reasonable prices given the likely demand. One of the less obvious venues for a romantic meal is St James Park. However, it could just provide the perfect night out for couples whose love of Newcastle United is matched only by their love for each other. They will be greeted with a glass of pink fizz and every woman will be given a gift as a memento of the special day before sitting down to a three-course table d hote dinner prepared by a team of award-winning chefs. Robert Smith and The Cure will not be in attendance, but there will be a rather delightful solo pianist tinkling the ivories in the background. Lovely. For more details, visit If food isn t on the menu for you, how about a romantic film? Not just any romantic film mind you... only the North East s favourite! As we go to press, we have absolutely no idea what that will be the great North East public have not decided yet. The Tyneside Cinema is calling on them to vote for the film that floats their love boat the most, with the winner to be screened on Valentine s Night, when guests will also enjoy complimentary chocolates. A LESS OBVIOUS VENUE FOR ROMANCE IS ST JAMES PARK The result will be announced on February 4. For further details, and to cast your vote, visit If, however, all that lovey dovey stuff leaves you cold, then you might want to check out Newcastle University s anti-valentine s film night. It takes place on Thursday, February 13 at 7.30pm and is free. The organisers have yet to decide which film to screen but promise it will contain little or no references to the L-word! For more Valentine s Day events and offers visit TIDE TURNS FOR TOP TV CHEF It s been 10 months since celebrity chef Kenny Atkinson shocked his fans by parting company with Rockliffe Hall in Darlington. The double-michelin starred Geordie wunderkind kept everyone guessing for some time before revealing his ambitious plans to launch his own venture on Newcastle s Quayside. House of Tides finally opens in the coming weeks, but if you think you had to wait a long time, you should spare a thought for Kenny s brother Mark. After the telly chef tweeted him about the launch and to confirm there was a table reserved for him, Mark s tongue-in-cheek reply read: Sweet that sounds amazing, 35 years and first cooked meal from my brother #worthwaitingfor ha ha. Judging by Kenny s upbeat outlook, however, a meal at House of Tides certainly will be worth the wait. The 37-year-old is making no secret of his ambition to secure his third Michelin star, insisting Newcastle can compete with the likes of London, Edinburgh and Birmingham. He said: I fully believe Newcastle is one of the best places in the country and I believe it is the ideal place for a top eatery that can get a Michelin star. HOUSE OF TIDES WILL BE WORTH THE WAIT But Kenny s high hopes for the restaurant are not matched by high prices. His goal is to offer relaxed dining in a fun and vibrant environment he even expects his chefs to mingle with diners yet a six-course taster menu costs less than 40. The restaurant is located in a 16th Century Grade 1 listed building on the city s quayside, called Buttress House. Because of its close proximity to the Tyne, it was known as The House at the Water s Edge, hence House of Tides, a name coined by Kenny s father-in-law. Shortly before opening, Kenny said: I am proud to be a Geordie, proud of my home city and now I can t wait to start cooking and showing people everywhere what we here in the North East are made of. 6 STAGE MY TOP 5 TANYA HEDLEY DON T TRY THIS AT HOME FEATURE The new series of the Beeb s hit talent show The Voice may have Kylie, but we ve got Jason. Well, our very own Theatre Royal has at any rate. The former star of Aussie soap Neighbours and reality show I m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here is to appear in the theatre s production of the all singing, all dancing spectacle that is Priscilla Queen of the Desert The Musical. Kylie s former squeeze will star as Tick in the uplifting adventure of three friends who hop aboard a battered old bus searching for love and friendship 10 FIT FOR A QUEEN and end up finding more than they ever dreamed of. The show, which runs for two weeks from February 3, promises a dazzling array of outrageous costumes which have already earned it Oliver and Tony awards. And, of course, songs that will have you clapping your hands and shuffling your feet such as It s Raining Men, I Will Survive, Boogie Wonderland and Girls Just Wanna Have Fun. The show has already played the West End and Broadway, where critics were blown away by its irrepressible exuberance, declaring it fabulous, CRITICS WERE BLOWN AWAY BY ITS IRREPRESSIBLE EXUBERANCE hugely entertaining, insanely glitzy and the best feel-good show since Mamma Mia. Praise doesn t really come much higher than that now, does it? Who could possibly resist? Jason Donavan fans note, however, the star will not be available to play the role on Monday 10 and Tuesday 11 February. QUICK QUESTION WHAT S THE MOST ROMANTIC THING ANYONE HAS EVER DONE FOR YOU? Well, my husband doesn t really go in for all that stuff but he did build me a giant garden shed that I use as an office for my social work training business. How romantic is that? CLAIRE PITCHFORD, 36, HAMSTERLEY MILL AMID MUCH VALENTINE S DAY- FUELLED ROMANCE, TANYA HEDLEY FROM THE VERMONT HOTEL, SHARES THE TOP FIVE WEDDING PHOTO SPOTS FOR NEWLY MARRIED COUPLES AT THE HOTEL. THE MILLENNIUM BRIDGE Not an ideal place to propose (imagine dropping the ring) but perfect for those city-chic wedding photos. It s even better at night, when the blinking eye is all lit up. BESSIE SURTEES HOUSE An exquisite example of Jacobean architecture and home to a true love story. It was here in 1772 that Bessie climbed from her window and eloped with Eldon Scott, despite resistance from her family. You can t stand in the way of true love. THE VAMPIRE RABBIT DOORWAY The beautifully decorative pink and white doorway adjacent to St Nicholas s Cathedral is juxtaposed with the addition of the gothic Vampire Rabbit perched at the top. VERMONT HOTEL SKY LOUNGE AND TERRACE 200ft above the city is an incredible panoramic view of the Newcastle and Gateshead cityscape. I m biased, but it is an exquisite backdrop and you ll never tire of taking in the view. THE CASTLE KEEP The iconic Castle Keep or New Castle is one of the oldest sites in the city. If you re a thrill junkie then pencil Sunday 9 February in your diary. That s the day Arenacross returns with its killer mix of all-action indoor dirt bike racing and gravity-defying Freestyle Motocross. The three-hour white-knuckle ride of a show set to a pumping soundtrack and laser show returns to Metro Radio Arena after last year s sell-out tour. The show takes the most spectacular elements of outdoor Motocross racing, boils them down into a concentrated cocktail and then shoehorns them into arenas onto purpose-built dirt tracks. The result is racing that is short, sharp and shockingly spectacular with huge triple jumps, murderous mogul sections and fast, banked corners all designed to provide a high-octane sensory feast. You can expect jaw-dropping aerial gymnastics as riders attempt to out-do each other, using special ramps to soar 40 feet above the track. Once considered MX mavericks, freestylers are now highly-paid sporting stars who compete in year-round world tour events such as the X Games. The line-up will include one of the sport s true superstars, Angelo Pellegrini, a two-time Italian indoor national champion. He said: I m looking forward to coming to the UK and racing your best riders. I am feeling in good form and confident that I can do well. There will be some very fast riders but I am also very fast. EXPECT JAW- DROPPING AERIAL GYMNASTICS 11

7 FEATURE STRETCHING A POINT If your New Year s get fit resolution hasn t already fallen by the wayside, well done you. However, pounding a treadmill or pumping iron isn t everyone s kit bag. For gentler souls seeking a fresh start in 2014, how about a spot of Vinyasa Krama? It may sound torturous but fear not. It is, in fact, a form of yoga and teacher Moira Fitzpatrick will be running an introduction class at the city s Yogalilies studio in Pilgrim Street on Sunday, February 2. She explained: Each of the Vinyasa Krama sequences start with very simple movements designed to open out the body and prepare you thoroughly for moving on to more challenging poses. It is a very safe and effective method which works with the body s stretch reflex rather than against it, gently encouraging your joints and muscles to become accustomed to particular postures, whilst increasing your strength and flexibility. Sounds like it s just what the doctor ordered. The introductory workshop runs between 10.30am and 12.30pm and costs 15. For details, visit IT WORKS WITH THE BODY NOT AGAINST IT QUICK QUESTION BEST CHAT UP LINE YOU VE EVER USED IN NEWCASTLE? Hi, I m doing a survey...what s your name? What s your phone number? Are you free next Friday? JOHN PHILLIPS, 34, FENHAM WHY I SING NICK FORBES LEADER, NEWCASTLE CITY COUNCIL On Sunday evenings I set the box to record Midsomer Murders and head over to the Sage Gateshead for the weekly rehearsal of the Chorus of Royal Northern Sinfonia. I ve sung in choirs since my early teens, and have been with the Sinfonia since We perform a satisfyingly wide range of repertoire, covering four centuries worth of music, and singing at the level demanded by the chorus is an amazing and intense experience. I especially love the last few rehearsals before a concert, when the conductor gives us his or her interpretation of the music that s when it really comes to life. It s also great fun being in the chorus - for example, having a party backstage with the cast of Don Giovanni DURING the final performance, or having last minute rehearsals on the bus on our way to a concert! And nothing quite beats the sense of achievement at the end of a performance when we all stand and take a bow. For me, the particular joy of singing is that you have to leave all your worries at the rehearsal door. There s no time for lapses of concentration; as well as requiring physical fitness and good breath control, you need to be able to focus solely on the music being performed. No matter how tired I am when I start singing, I feel refreshed afterwards. It s my idea of a perfect work out, not just for my body but for my soul too. So although the temptation is to put my feet up and watch TV on a Sunday evening, spending a couple of hours singing with friends really sets me up for whatever the week brings.
