4 4 Welcome to the Presteigne Festival s annual feast of the arts, created and curated in partnership with composers, musicians and artists, taking place in the beautiful surroundings of the Welsh Marches. Our central programme features Baltic music celebrating the centenaries of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania becoming independent republics. We continue to explore British contemporary music with new commissions from Cydonie Banting, David Bednall, Gareth Moorcraft, Huw Watkins, Manos Charalabopoulos and composer-in-residence Martin Butler; and join the birthday celebrations for Michael Berkeley and David Matthews. We open with Joseph Phibbs exciting new chamber opera Juliana, based on Strindberg s unsettling drama Miss Julie; the Nordic theme being continued in art, music and with the screening of three legendary Scandinavian movies. The supporting programme continues to extend Welsh art with Peter Lord, Stephen Johnson on music, poet Gregory Leadbetter, Terry Victor s one-man show Well Thumbed, music and literary talks, Open Studios, exhibitions and film. The dazzling artist line-up includes Festival favourites the Navarra Quartet, Huw Watkins and the Choir of Royal Holloway, and performers appearing at Presteigne for the first time Latvian violinist Kristīne Balanas, soprano Ruby Hughes and pianist Joseph Tong. Larsson was inspired by themes of farm and home; his ideas will be reflected against the rural backdrop of the buildings and landscape at The Rodd, home to the Sidney Nolan Trust. Jackie will show how simple line drawings and tape can be used to create a plate that can be inked and run through the Trust s etching press, resulting in a collagraph print. Suitable for both beginners and practising artists, you will make a plate, ink and print it twice, once in black ink and once adding colour with chine-collé. Previous experience of drawing or printing is not necessary. A short introduction will be followed by practical experience using a knife and tools to make the plate. Yet despite their geographically precarious position, these three small countries have hung on to a sense of cultural identity, and nowhere does that emerge more impressively and movingly than in their music. British composer Gabriel Jackson has long-held musical ties with Latvia and Estonia and talks to Thomas Hyde about the Singing Revolution which heralded the restoration of independence in all three Baltic countries. The Singing Revolution not only bought political freedom but, importantly, allowed Baltic composers to express themselves freely in new and experimental musical language. This illustrated discussion centres on leading composers from all their Baltic countries. The soixante-huitards were out to change the world; to stop the war in Vietnam, and to remake the world in the shape of love. Ian Marchant s school opened in 1968, and he was taught by young hopeful and enthusiastic teachers, who felt that education was the key to making that change happen. In this talk, he ll be looking at politics, music and literature to recreate something of the atmosphere of those heady days behind the barricade; and to ask, what happened to the soixante-huitards, fifty years on? Ian Marchant is originally from Newhaven in East Sussex, and now lives with his family in the no longer extant Welsh county of Radnorshire. He has published seven books, including the travel/memoirs Parallel Lines, The Longest Crawl and Something of the Night. He is a sometimes presenter of documentaries for BBC Radio, and has appeared numerous times at festivals (including Glastonbury, Secret Garden Party and Wilderness) as one half of semi-legendary hippie cabaret duo Your Dad. 30 FESTIVAL EXHIBITIONS Sir Sidney Nolan: Spray Paintings Sidney Nolan Studio, The Rodd. Photograph: Alex Ramsay Sidney Nolan, Season in Hell (Benjamin Britten), 1982, x 159.7cm, spray paint on canvas, Sidney Nolan Trust In the 1980s, after settling in Herefordshire, Sidney Nolan embarked on several series of spray paintings, delighting in the new brands of paint made for artists, as well as supplementing his palette with commercial and domestic spray cans. This exhibition includes works from 3 series: portraits of significant individuals (including his great friend Benjamin Britten, above); images of mythical indigenous Australian subjects; and powerful works that respond to the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody ( ). Sidney s Studio is now open alongside the Gallery at The Rodd. His last workspace, and the only one that remains intact, it is packed with an extraordinary variety of art materials. Visitors to The Rodd can gain an unrivalled insight into Nolan s creative world, his use of paint, his techniques and inspiration. Refreshments available The Rodd's ancient woodland is a designated special wildlife site. Managed by coppicing for centuries, it is home to a diverse flora. Pick up a map and list of species to guide you on The Rodd s newly-created woodland footpath from the gallery. 30 Admission 5 Cost derbyn 5 Sidney Nolan Trust, The Rodd, Presteigne LD8 2LL Open daily during the Festival 11.00am 5.00pm Ymddiriedolaeth Sidney Nolan, The Rodd, Llanandras LD8 2LL Bob dydd yn ystod cyfnod yr Ŵyl 11.00am 5.00pm
