1 SIGHTLINES THE MUNI NEWSLETTER President s Message: JOIN US FOR THE MUNI S 2015 SEASON! HAPPY NEW YEAR! 2015 will be an exciting year at the Springfield Muni Opera as four teams of talented directors and staff bring you a season of magical musicals under the stars. This year s Muni season truly has something for everyone. Join us in June for uproarious laughs at Monty Python s SPAMALOT, a cockeyed look at the legends of King Arthur, directed by Mac Warren. Anyone who is young at heart will be enchanted by Horton, Jojo, Gertrude and the other fantastical characters in Seussical TM, our July show, directed by Stephan Kaplan and Dennis O Brien. The beautiful melodies and breathtaking dance numbers of West Side Story, directed by Anna Bussing, will mesmerize audiences in August. Finally, in September, director Rich McCoy will transform the Muni stage into pre-world War II Berlin for Cabaret, one of Broadway s most popular productions. Even though our season doesn t begin until June, now is a very busy time for The Muni because we are putting together staff, creating production designs, and getting ready for auditions. Most of this edition of Sightlines is dedicated to the auditions process: information on the shows, parts available, how to sign up to audition, and information on auditions themselves. Our website () also contains a wealth of information regarding auditions; later in February, aspiring auditionees can go to the website to register to audition and to select an audition time. In addition, here in Sightlines and on the website, you ll find information about our auditions workshop. Experienced and new performers alike will find the workshop a valuable venue to talk to the directors, learn about the auditions process, and get tips for giving a successful audition. It s also a fun opportunity to see other Muni-ites and catch up with friends. If you re like me and prefer to be a part of The Muni without going on stage, you ll learn about volunteer opportunities at the workshop as well. Muni is proud of its tradition as an all-volunteer organization; it offers people of all ages an opportunity to participate and encourage the arts. Muni volunteers build and paint sets, pop popcorn, usher patrons to their seats, sew costumes, help with landscaping just about anything you can imagine. Our website also provides information about volunteering and a convenient on-line form with which you can sign up to volunteer at The Muni. Another way to support the Muni and the arts in Springfield is to become a Muni Backstager. Through their financial contributions, Backstagers help The Muni maintain its standard of excellence in musical theatre at a site that is verdant and family-friendly. Backstagers enjoy several special perks, including premium parking, a season kick-off picnic, and a sneak peak at our first show, Monty Python s SPAMALOT. For more information, visit the Muni website or ask any member of the Muni Board of Managers. As I said, The Muni provides art and entertainment for all ages, and our Thursday performances offer special pricing for children and seniors. We also offer a senior bus package that includes a charter bus ride to and from The Muni, in addition to show admission and refreshments. Details are on the Muni website. Finally, as the 2015 Muni President, I would like to give special recognition to the four show sponsors for the coming season: County Auditor Paul Palazzolo (Monty Python s SPAMALOT), McGladrey (Seussical TM ), Springfield Clinic (West Side Story), and Illini Bank (Cabaret). Their generosity and support make our season possible. On behalf of the entire Muni community - thank you! I hope to see each of you at The Muni this summer. It will be an exciting season! ADULT WORKSHOP Saturday, February 21 at 1:00 p.m. Open to those 13 years of age and up. registration process is opened to the public. Can t attend the audition workshop? You can still sign-up for an audition time slot starting Sunday, February 22. Helpful hint! If you are auditioning for a role that requires a separate dance audition, it is strongly recommended that you do your vocal audition first, followed by your dance audition that same day. Our dance auditions go very quickly and it is easier for WHAT TO EXPECT THE DAY OF YOUR AUDITION ADULT AUDITIONS March 7, 8, 14 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. ADULT AUDITIONS take place in hour long sessions; vocal/movement auditions are separate from dance auditions. Plan to check in at the registration table at least 45 minutes prior to your scheduled audition time, allowing time for the vocal warm-ups before the actual audition. The Muni provides accompanists for all vocal auditions, so please bring sheet music suitable for piano accompaniment. In closed auditions with a small group of other auditionees, each auditionee will perform a short (2 minutes or less) song of his or her choosing. Auditionees may be asked to read from a script provided by the directors. Basic movement auditions, done In a group, take place at the end of the audition time slot. CHILDREN S AUDITIONS March 21 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Only auditionees who participate in the hour long, separate dance audition are exempt from the movement audition. Some roles require auditionees to participate in a full dance audition. This is largely based upon the demands of the role for which the adult is auditioning or for which the director is considering him/her. (Consult the Parts Available section of Sightlines to see what parts require dance.) Hour-long dance auditions are scheduled separately from vocal auditions. CHILDREN S AUDITIONS take place in two-hour sessions; shows casting children are Suessical TM and West Side Story. During the first hour, Muni staff will teach auditionees a simple song and dance. Auditionees parents or guardians are welcome to observe this learning portion of the audition. The second hour is the closed audition and only The Muni show staff are permitted to be present. During the audition, auditionees will perform the song and dance in front of the show staff. Callback invitations are posted by the auditionee number in the lobby shortly following each audition session. choreographers to recognize you - and remember what shows and parts you are interested in - if you have gone through the vocal audition process first. 3 Monty Python s SPAMALOT Presented by County Auditor Paul Palazzolo JUNE 12-13, 18-20, Rehearsals Start APRIL 12 DIRECTOR: Mac Warren PRODUCER: Cindy Wall ASSISTANT DIRECTOR: Nathan Peak VOCAL DIRECTOR: Christie Lazarides CHOREOGRAPHER: Andrew Maynerich [Muni Debut] A hilarious musical farce full of multiple casting opportunities! Lovingly ripped off from the classic film comedy Monty Python & The Holy Grail, SPAMALOT retells the legend of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table, and features a bevy of beautiful show girls, not to mention cows, killer rabbits and French people. Did we mention the bevy of beautiful show girls? DIRECTOR S NOTES: All characters have British accents; be prepared to read accordingly. It is strongly suggested that those auditioning for SPAMALOT be familiar with the music from the musical and movie. Ages listed serve as a guide. Some character doublings may be changed based on production needs. In tribute to the film (where 6 actors played most male, and a few female, parts) several actors play multiple roles. The only characters not doubling are King Arthur, Lady of the Lake, and Patsy. Most ensemble members play 5-6 roles. Auditionees for Monty Python s SPAMALOT must take part in either the Movement or Dance portion of auditions; characters requiring Dance have been noted below. King Arthur: (Baritone / Age Late 30s-60s) The King of England who sets out on a quest to form the Knights of the Roundtable and find the Holy Grail. Great Humor. Good singer. Range: Low D3 High G4. Sir Lancelot: (Tenor/Baritone / Dance / Age 20s-40s) A Knight of the Roundtable. He is fearless to a bloody fault but through a twist of fate, does discover his softer side. Range: Low C3 High E4. Patsy: (Tenor/Baritone / Dance / Age 30s-40s) King Arthur s horse and servant. Underappreciated but always longing for King Arthur s approval. Their straight and proper carriage is interspersed with whimsical, off-center and quirky movements. Cadets must be able to execute unison movement.
