SEE DAI DOO INSTALLATION OF OFFICERS AND DIRECTORS BY FLORENCE POON AU Days before January 1, 2015, member volunteers came to the See Dai Doo Society and started to prepare for the Installation. The embroidered silk seat covers for the President, Vice President, Officers and Trustees were taken out of the revered old chest for the Society s traditional ceremony. The Society spruced up the hanging Chinese lanterns, each tassel shiny and new. The ceremonial table was set up with the three Chinese figurines representing the three attributes of a good life: Fook, Look, Sau: Fook representing good fortune; Look representing prosperity and Sau representing longevity. Bu Look (Chinese grapefruit) and a tower of oranges on the table were placed as auspicious symbols for the start of a good year. A 16 pound gao, that was steamed in the Society s kitchen, represented cohesiveness and harmony. On January 1, at 12 noon, the sound of firecrackers and lion dancing by the Chinese Physical Culture Association started off the Installation of the new Officers and Trustees of the See Dai Doo Society. About 300 people were greeted by President Wesley Fong, his wife Linda and Vice President Leonard Kam and his wife Lori. Cecilia Fong, the daughter of President Fong, was the Mistress of Ceremony. The new Officers and Trustees were sworn in by the Honorable Judge Edward Kubo, Jr. After the Installation, the ceremonial roast pig was carried out of the Society Hall by Bradley Au and Jason Lum. They were escorted by Riley Joe, granddaughter of President Fong, while she twirled a red ribbon that symbolized the horns of the upcoming Year of the Ram. Patrick Calizar did the invocation and then a lunch of roast pork, noodles, ha gau, siu mai, potstickers, almond cookies and oranges were served. The guests also received a gift of a pair of beautiful chopsticks. Chopsticks, fai gee, sounds like growing family by having more children. By this symbolic gift, the See Dai Doo Society wishes everyone a healthy growing family and may our membership also continue to grow. Many thanks to the Guang Zhong Music Ensemble, that played Chinese music and sang Chinese songs before the start of the program; to Blossom Wong and her team who decorated the Great Hall; to Lucy Wong and her helpers who served beverages and lunch; to Norma and James Acopan, who chopped the roast pig; and their helpers who prepared the hundreds of plates for lunch; and to the many tireless volunteers who helped set up and clean up. Kitchen helpers at the New Year s Installation January 1 st at SDDS Great Hall Kerrigan, Kiai, Taylor, Deanne, Norma Acopan, and Charlene Chang.

PRESIDENTS MESSAGE By Wesley F.Fong I would like to first thank my fellow See Dai Doo Society members for having the confidence in me to lead the society during this year of the Ram. Also congratulations to my fellow officers, trustees and directors. I look forward to serving with them as a team to further the objectives of our society. Thank you to Robert Ching and his officers, trustees and directors for their two years of dedicated service to the society. Thank you to our past presidents for their leadership and sacrifice in helping to make our society what it is today a progressive and affluent society. A special thanks to my family for their continued support in this new challenge. 110 years ago a group of men met at the living quarters of Wai Nam Ching located on the third floor of the Wo Fat Restaurant, to form an association among See and Dai District villages. The Society has come a long way since those humble beginning and I am proud to be the 57 th president and second with the surname of Fong. When asked what I plan to accomplish during my tenure as president, I replied: Progressive positive change with the society s rich culture and tradition as a guide. To this end: There is already a proposed new by-laws providing for the change in the procedure of electing directors, officers and trustees and allowing children of female members to be eligible to also be members of See Dai Doo Society. I forecast opportunities for new programs to have attract more member participation and increase membership. More community service is a priority being a non-profit organization. These changes are profound but to make it become a reality, we need the support of not only our officers, directors and trustees but support and participation by our fellow members. We can only do it together to make it work. I again thank my fellow members for this honor to serve. And may I wish the See Dai Doo family continued good health, long life and prosperity in this the year of the Ram.\ Wes Fong The most popular documentary in 2012 in China. Beautiful, Tasty, Unforgettable! With the highest level of HD filming, Chinese cuisine has never been introduced better. 1 The Gift from Nature 2 The story of Staple Food DATE: APRIL 3, Inspiration for Transformation PLACE: SDDS GREAT HALL 4 The Flavour of Time TIME: 7:00 pm 5 The Secret of Kitchen 6 The Equilibrium of Tastes 7 Our Fields A Bite of China ( pinyin: she jian shang de zhongguo) is a 2012 Chinese documentary television series on the history of food, eating, and cooking in China directed by Chen Xiaoqing and narrated by Li Lihong. It first appeared at the China Central Television in May 14th, 2012, and quickly gained much popularity. Having started filming in March 2011, this seven-episode documentary series introduces the history and story behind foods of various kinds in more than 60 locations all around China. The documentary has also been actively encouraged as a means of introducing Chinese food culture to those unfamiliar with local cuisine. It has also been praised for its innovative approach towards discussing Chinese food which typically revolves around the different styles of food rather than what goes into the making of specific dishes and the people involved in making them, having added a human touch to Chinese food.

You won t want to miss this. Christmas Caroling Betsy Y. Lum, Chair See Dai Doo Society members enjoyed its last community project of the Year 2014 on December 12, 5:30 p.m., at the Rehab Hospital of the Pacific. Thirty-Eight SDDS members and their families brought joyful holiday greetings to the patients and staff. We were greeted by Jean Nakanishi, Executive Director, Rehab Hospital Foundation. President Robert Ching presented her a donation on behalf of the Society. She thanked the members for their generous donation and for the many years that we have been coming to bring joys and cheers to the patients and staff during the holiday season. We strolled through the three floors of the beautifully renovated hospital caroling. Members of Harry Wong s Guang Zhong Music Ensemble, under choir director Betty Jong, led our members singing a medley of Christmas carols to the delight of the patients and staff. Some of the patients on wheelchairs cheerfully joined us in singing. After caroling we returned to SDDS hall for fellowship and a delicious Korean bento dinner and dessert. Our special appreciation to the Guang Zhong Chinese Music Ensemble for the many years that they have accompanied us in caroling at the Rehab Hospital; to Emilia Collins for the beautiful varied colored tinsel leis that she brought for the patients; to Charlene Chang for the SDDS leis to all the carolers; to Theresa Chun, Bill Lum, Charlene Chang for the ono desserts; \\dr/ \riley Yuen photographer, and to all our members and families for taking time to continue SDDS holiday community project. Xie-xie and mahalo to all and a happy, healthful, cheerful Year of the Ram 2015.

WELCOME TO OUR NEWEST AND YOUNGEST SDDS MEMBER Bethany L. Lai, 8 years, received her SDDS membership card at the January Director s meeting (January 7, 2015). With her are SDDS Vice President Leonard Kam, Bethany s grandfather, Kenneth K. S. Lai, Bethany s father Keith K. Lai, Bethany, and SDDS Membership Chair Milton Yee. CHRISTMAS PARTY, 2014 BY NORMA ACOPAN, CHAIRPERSON This year the Christmas Party was held on December 7, 2014 at See Dai Doo Society great hall. John Young supervised his team and with the help from my family, they set up the tables and chairs, decorated the stage and Christmas tree, and arranged the games and prizes for the next day s event. The table decorated with lawa I ferns, wood-roses, pine cones and added greeneries were done by Blossom Wong and her family. The festive ribbon bag-holders that contained a red napkin, red fork and spoon were made by me and Charlene Chang. Margaret Lyau donated some of the game prizes and candies for the children. The program started at 5:00pm with the invocation by President Robert Ching. After the blessing Deanne Ah Mook Sang, announced the start of the dinner line, first the children accompanied with their family then the rest of the guests. The menu consist of BBQ chicken, BBQ beef, ham, noodles and rice, enough to go around that some of the guest were able to fill their plates the second time. The guest enjoyed the soft serve ice cream and cakes with choices of chocolate, white and haupia. When it was time for Santa Clause to arrive, Deanne led the children in singing Jingle Bells to announce Santa s appearance. The children s eyes twinkled with excitement as they saw Santa walking-in carrying his big red bag full of presents. Santa greeted the adults with a hug or a hand shake as he made his way to the children patiently seated on the floor in front of the stage. One by one as each child s name was called parents would rush up to position themselves to get a good snap shot of their child sitting on Santa s lap with their present. Santa emptied his magical bag of all the presents then invited the guests to gather around him for a family photo. The sad moment was seeing Santa leave but we all waved good-by to the Jolly O Santa as he walked to the back of the hall and away he went. HO, HO, HO Hailey Balantac The moment came back to reality when President Robert Ching randomly called 20 children names and presented to them a lisee. Vice President Wesley Fong pulled an adult lucky number for his gift card. It was a lucky draw for Roseland Siu, as the winner. Lucky numbers kept rolling in for 6 more door prizes to be given away, but that s not all, we had Hawaiian Flower printed bags containing goodies to be passed out to the adults so everyone went home a winner. I would like to thank all my volunteers. They did a wonderful job in making this Christmas party a success. See you at the 2015 Christmas Party. Norma Acopan, Chairperson

We Need Your Help For the past several years at least, we have not had a dedicated Welfare Committee Chairman monitor and recognize the members that have passed on or have been hospitalized. As a result, the Society has at times missed capturing some information about our valued members and failed to acknowledge and offer a token of our appreciation to this member. But now, with the volunteer effort of senior member John H.L. Young, we hope to get back on track to honor our members that have passed on or have been hospitalized. However, John Young cannot do it alone and therefore has asked all members to report any members passing or hospitalization which may or may not appear in the news. Please forward this information by to the Society sdd@hawaiiantel.biz or call and leave a message for us to follow up. Working together, we can keep up-todate on our members status and give a timely acknowledgement in times of concern.
