A ny way you spell it, this Tony Award-winning musical comedy is one of the brightest and funniest shows to play on Broadway in the last several years. Where else could six young people struggling with puberty stand out and fit in at the same time? This momentous spelling championship pits the quirkiest collection of heroes against one another in the most unlikely of hit musicals. Overseen by grown-ups who barely managed to escape childhood themselves, these six charming contestants learn that winning isn t everything and that losing doesn t necessarily make you a loser. Oh, and you ll want to brush up on your spelling; because at each performance, four volunteers are selected from the audience to participate in this tuneful, offbeat and heartwarming show. The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is being directed by Kathy Mulay (Deathtrap, A Little Night Music, Into the Woods) with musical direction by Aaron J. Cassette (Little Women, the Musical, 42nd Street, Sweeney Todd). Melissa Sparks (Mame, The Taming of the Shrew, West Side Story) is serving as Assistant Choreographer. The talented cast features Civic veterans Kaitie Badalamenti (The Will Rogers Follies, Joseph ), Janine Black (Little Women, the Musical, I Love You, You re Perfect, Now Change, Ruthless! the Musical, Chicago), Elizabeth Fritsch (The Wizard of Oz), Ken Holda (Little Shop of Horrors, My Favorite Year, Oklahoma!), Greg Laux (Twelfth Night, Disney s Beauty and the Beast, The Full Monty), Matthew C. Shabala (Damn Yankees, Joseph, Footloose, Tony n Tina s Wedding), Mary Teutsch (Fiddler on the Roof, The Full Monty, The Baker s Wife) and Robert Weiner (The Full Monty, Ragtime, Lost in Yonkers). Justin Dumois is making his Civic debut in this production. Roger W. Burleigh (A Chorus Line, Cats, The Boys Next Door) is stage managing The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, with Kathryn M. Jones (The Full Monty, The Miracle Worker) and Maria Jordan (The Baker s Wife, The Mouse That Roared) serving as Assistant Stage Managers. (This production will be most enjoyed by the more mature members of the family.) Did You Know? The original Broadway production of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee played 1,136 performances and won two Tony Awards. About a half hour before the show begins, audience members in the lobby are given the chance to sign up to participate in the show as guest spellers. On the evening she appeared as a guest speller, Julie Andrews misspelled supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. This is the time of year when we take a few extra moments to reflect on what is truly important to us and give thanks for all of the wonderful joys that make our lives complete. It s also a time when we bestow our friends, family and neighbors with tokens of appreciation and affection. If, like me, you haven t quite finished shopping for everyone on your gift giving list, I would encourage you to consider a gift from the Civic. There are lots of ways to share your award-winning theatre with family, friends and neighbors. An ACT II Subscription is truly the gift that keeps on giving. We could not provide all of these wonderful opportunities to our community without the support of our community. We are thankful for the time and talent of our volunteers, the generosity of our donors, sponsors and patrons, and the ability and opportunities that we have to present great theatre to our community. Thank you for making your community theatre a vital and enjoyable place for all. This is also the time of year that we make plans and resolutions for the upcoming New Year. I hope your plans for 2010 include spending some time at the Civic. We have some terrific shows lined up and they ll be made all the better if you re here to enjoy them. If you have previously volunteered, taken a class, camp or auditioned we are happy to provide you with a completed audition form when you arrive. Simply call or and let us know that you are planning to audition and we'll have your audition form ready for you. Students must have turned 9 on or before the day they audition. REQUIREMENTS Youth auditioning for acting roles will be asked to read from the script. Youth interested in crew positions will be asked to listen to designer presentations, speak to designers/ technicians and indicate interest for specific crews. All youth auditioning will indicate preference for Acting Only, Tech Only or Either/Or. NEED TO KNOW A FREE Inside the Civic Youth Workshop is available on Saturday, January 9, 2010 from 1:00pm to 4:00pm to help students prepare for auditions.
