2 ARSENIC AND OLD LACE (JAN) INTO THE WOODS (JAN-FEB) THE MIRACLE WORKER (FEB) GOOD PEOPLE (MAR) free PerformaNCe theatre Kalamazoo New PlaYfeSt staged readings As a member of Theatre Kalamazoo, the Civic is very pleased to be participating in the fifth annual New Play Festival, which will be held in the Epic Center Theatre January 30th and 31st. We will be presenting the original work: Where the Bee Sucks by Jane huffman January 31, 2015 THE EPIC THEATRE AT 7:30PM At its core, the play examines the ways in which fear for a loved one begets manipulation and selfishness, even in the name of love. For more detailed information visit: Ushering in the New Year H appy New Year! I hope your holidays were filled with friends and family, good food and great theatre. The start of a New Year is a great time for reflection on all the things we are grateful for in our lives, and maybe a time to make a few resolutions about things we want to do differently in the New Year. Here at the Civic, we hope you have resolved to take the time to enjoy the good company of friends, the pursuit of happy leisure and to support the rich array of local arts and artists in our community. As a community we are truly rich in cultural pursuits, and as a community leader for 85 years, we are proud of the contribution we continue to make to the quality of life here in Kalamazoo. Did you know that there are therapeutic benefits to live theatre and those benefits are as old as history itself? Since the time of the Greeks (and even before), there has been presentational story telling complete with characters and emotions, the result of which is a cathartic experience for audience members. Audiences go on different journeys with the characters in a play and experience a wide range of emotion that has actually been proven Kristen Chesak Managing Director to reduce stress by releasing emotions. The Greeks found this form of catharsis essential to a healthy society, and 3,000 years later we are still maintaining this practice of storytelling in the form of live theatre, contributing to a healthy community. We have had a wonderful start to our 86th season, filled with fun musicals, and a great CYT show, and there is more on the way in We have some fabulous opportunities for you in the New Year to see and do theatre! I hope you are planning on seeing Lend Me a Tenor in the Auditorium. This comedy is sure to keep you laughing all evening. We also have The Who s Tommy opening in the Parish Theatre at the end of the month. This rock opera is filled with fantastic songs, and is sure to get your blood pumping on a cold Michigan evening. Our Winter Classes are also right around the corner, complete with a Master Class with David Alpert, a NYC based Director and WMU alumni. The tap class is back for another round, and we are also offering stage combat for adults. These great offerings, plus a monologue class for seniors and a plethora of youth classes are just waiting for you to investigate at From all of us here at the Civic, we wish you much love, luck and good health in 2015! We ll see you at the theatre! But when the star arrives desperately late with his ego and his jealous wife in tow, things don't go exactly according to plan. A double dose of tranquilizers, an over-sexed soprano, and a mistaken suicide note add up to complete chaos! What transpires is a furiously paced comedy with more than a touch of the Marx brothers; complete with slamming doors and laugh-out-loud humor.
