1 Kalamazoo s Community Theatre JANUArY 2016 A real hardbody Takes Center Stage B Season Presenter: Book by Doug Wright Lyrics by Amanda Green Music by Trey Anastasio and Amanda Green ased on a true story, the musical Hands on a Hardbody, follows 10 down-on-their-luck Texans, each desperate for a new lease on life. Armed with nothing but hope, humor and ambition, they are all determined to endure four sleepless days and nights in a grueling endurance competition in the Texas heat for a chance to win a brand-new Nissan Hardbody truck. In this hilarious, hard fought contest, all they have to do is keep at least one hand on the truck, and they will drive away with their American Dream! And audiences will find a real, Nissan Frontier truck, center stage as the star of the show in the Parish Theatre this month! Civic Technical Director, Phillip A. miller, and Properties Master, Stacy Bartell took an adventure filled trip to Tuscaloosa, Alabama last summer to pick up the truck literally. Armed with a forklift and a Ryder truck, they drove our hardbody home to Kalamazoo. Since its arrival, the Civic s designers and technical staff have been busy getting it ready PErFOrMANCE DATES: Friday January 29 7:30pm Saturday January 30 7:30pm Sunday January 31 2:00pm Thursday February 4 7:30pm Friday February 5 7:30pm Saturday February 6 7:30pm Sunday February 7 2:00pm Friday February 12 7:30pm Saturday February 13 7:30pm ASL Interpreted performance Production Sponsors: for its debut on January 29th. The truck is from the 1998 model year, so obtaining parts has presented a challenge, but the Civic team has tackled each task and made the truck a shiny, red hardbody - worthy of its title role! The front end of the truck actually had to be reconfigured as well as the frame being re-enforced. Casters were added to make the truck easy to move, so when the truck literally becomes a dance partner, the actors can push, spin, and tow it. The next challenge the tech staff faced, was that they knew they could get the truck into the theatre space through the scene shop but how was the cast going to be able to rehearse with it? 2 LEND ME A TENOR (JAN) THE WHO S TOMMY (JAN-FEB) THE HOBBIT (FEB) CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF (MAR) STEPPING OUT (MA CONTINUED FrOM COVEr PAGE A real hardbody Takes Center Stage Since the truck couldn t be hauled upstairs to the Muzzi Rehearsal Studio at Carver Center, the Civic crew fashioned a rehearsal truck made out of leftover 2x4 s, casters, and the casket cart from our recent production of Evita! This gives the cast a sense of the size of the truck as well as giving them a way to rehearse keeping their hands on the hardbody! The show is an event-based experience and contestants are cut throughout the show, leading to a lone winner. Staying true to the documentary, these are stories from REAL people who experienced this competition. Set in a parking lot in Texas, the stories were put together and music added, including numbers that play with blues, folk and R&B. Director Sandra Bremer says, Amanda green and Trey Anastasio s score is inspired by the doggedly individualistic, real-life people and musical idioms from country ballads to southern rock, Americana, swampy funk, gospel and delta blues. To me something for everyone!! So shake off your January blues and come feel the Texas heat in the Parish Theatre. Will your favorite character beat the odds and drive away with a brand new truck? But that doesn't mean that all of his family has left Jersey. In fact, he spends every Sunday with both sets of grandparents. These weekly visits are governed by the three F's -- family, faith and food. Naturally, the news doesn't sit too well when Nicky tells his doting grandparents that he has been offered the job of a lifetime, a job that will take him to Seattle. How could he leave his family's love and 15 pound lasagnas? they wonder. Thus begins a series of schemes designed to keep Nicky from leaving home (including introducing him to a potential girlfriend). You didn t have to be raised on ravioli or rigatoni to enjoy the universal themes found in this funny, heartwarming play. So, call your grandparents, order your tickets, and share a wonderful experience in the theatre.
