3 Kalamazoo s Community Theatre SEPTEMBER 2015 Jay Berkow Brings Evita Tour Experience to the Civic R Season Presenter: Music by Andrew Lloyd Webber Lyrics by Tim Rice ehearsals recently started for our opening production of Evita. The man leading the way and directing this musical masterpiece is Jay Berkow. For the past 12 years, Jay has served as the Director of Musical Theatre at WMU but prior to his current position in higher education Jay was a professional actor, touring in national tours of La Cage Aux Folles, A Chorus Line, and Evita. The roles of Eva Peron and the show s everyman Che are two of the most vocally demanding roles in musical theatre, so Jay made the decision to double cast the roles of Eva and Che in the Civic s production. But he plans a team based approach, so that each actor can bring their interpretation to the role, while working together to establish a specific, consistent characterization of the role. This is not only a challenge for the actors playing these roles, but for the whole company. The entire cast will rehearse with both pairs of actors in these leading roles. The big production numbers in Evita represent the pivotal moments in Eva s life, and Jay is looking PERFORMANCE DATES: Friday September 25 7:30pm Saturday September 26 7:30pm Sunday September 27 2:00pm Thursday october 1 7:30pm Friday october 2 7:30pm Saturday october 3 7:30pm Sunday october 4 2:00pm Friday october 9 7:30pm Saturday october 10 7:30pm ASL Interpreted performance Production Sponsors: forward to staging those. The Civic cast includes an incredible ensemble of dancers who will be featured in the number Buenos Aires and the entire company is onstage during the final number in the first act, A New Argentina. Working closely with lighting designer AnnMarie Miller and scenic designer David Kyhn, Jay will be directing this Civic production in a way to keep the story clear, all while creating theatrical magic. A great deal of research on the Peron era in Argentina took place between the time Jay was involved in the show as a performer, and when he started directing the show once the tour closed. His thoughts and ideas about this incredibly enigmatic icon changed following his research. Eva Peron was an illegitimate girl who hated the middle class, she grew up wanting to redistribute the wealth in her country and change the social fabric of Argentina. Peron was a fascist who was in Italy receiving military training from Mussolini, and yet he marries this young socialist girl. Eva was instrumental in CONTINUED ON PAGE 2 EVITA PRODUCTION TEAM: Director/Choreographer: Jay Berkow Musical Director: Brent J. 4 ACADEMY OF THEATRE ARTS SUMMER ACTING CAMP DOWNTOWN KALAMAZOO SALSA COOK-OFF AT POP CITY POPCORN THE CIVIC GARAGE SALE EXTRAVAGANZA DOWNTOWN KALAMAZOO SALSA COOK-OFF AT POP CITY POPCORN CONTINUED FROM COVER PAGE Jay Berkow Brings Evita Tour Experience to the Civic getting Peron the presidency, yet was she aware of what he was doing or was he using her? Since he is so familiar with the show, Jay feels it is his responsibility to make choices and interpret the show so that the story is clear for the audience. He has definite ideas on who Eva Peron was and is working so that the storytelling in the Civic s production is consistent with the truth as we know it. Eva Peron was a girl who was seduced by power, yet her commitment to the people was true. She did care. Jay hopes the audience will take this journey with the Civic company, which will reveal this incredibly complicated young woman. A woman audiences will love at one moment, and despise the next. The Civic company has their fingers crossed there will be no mishaps like one night on Jay s tour. During the final scene, Eva lies dying, lamenting about the choices she has made, and she is surrounded by doctors and attendants. One night the actress playing Eva reached out toward an attendant so far, she fell out of the bed face first onto the stage floor. Luckily, it was her death scene and she had sung her last note, so, the attendants lifted her back into the bed for the show s final moment. Live theatre we love it! FOR TICKETS VISIT or call the Box Office at Know Before You Go e are gearing up for another W fantastic season at the Civic, and this year we are very focused on making sure that your theatre-going experience is the best one it can be. And for us, your experience actually starts when you decide to check out what opportunities are available at the Civic. We hope you will check out all of the great offerings for the 87th season in our newsletter, or on our website, or other social media sources. We want you to know about the show, interesting facts and stories that might make the production meaningful, and anything that you need to be aware of prior to seeing a production here at the Civic. This season we have added a tab on our production pages of our website entitled BEFORE YOU GO. This tab will have information regarding which venue the production is in, the GPS address for your phone mapping for your convenience, any parking issues or downtown events that might prompt you to allow more time in getting to the theatre, and any comments that we think you need to know about the content of the production - such as mature themes, or atmospheric fog or haze, or maybe limited wheelchair seating. Kristen Chesak Executive Director All of this information is designed to help you make an informed decision of your theatre going experience. We are such a diverse community and in serving this beautifully enriching community, we know that not every offering at the Civic will appeal to every community member. But, we also strongly believe that as a consumer of theatre, it is really up to you to decide what fits with you and your family s needs. And if you come across a show that you are not familiar with, but it sounds interesting, and you aren t sure it is for you or your family, please do not hesitate to call the box office and ask us anything you want to know about the show, we will be happy to tell you. We want you to have a great theatre-going experience - one that is entertaining, educating and enriching. I am looking forward to the start of another wonderful season with Evita and Sherlock Holmes and the Mystery of the Crown Jewel. See you at the theatre!
