This beautiful play, which Variety called a rare and memorable theatrical experience, was first presented over 25 years ago and since then has become one of the most popular plays presented by community and regional theatres. Following its original Broadway run, On Golden Pond was filmed with Henry Fonda, Katherine Hepburn and Jane Fonda in the lead roles. In 2005 James Earl Jones and Leslie Uggams starred in a very successful Broadway revival. Lovable curmudgeon, Norman Thayer, Jr., and his spirited wife, Ethel, have spent the last 43 summers at their family s lakeside cottage in Maine. As they settle in for another summer respite they are visited by their estranged daughter Chelsea who, en route to a European vacation, leaves behind her fiancé s troubled young son. Colliding generations soon forge common ground, but when Chelsea returns to discover Norman showering the young boy with the love she never knew, years of bitter memories and resentment rise to the surface. An intimate family drama laced with humor and heart, this heartwarming play explores growing up, growing old and growing closer. Director Robert L. Smith brings more than 50 years of theatrical experience to his staging of On Golden Pond. Featured in the production are Civic veterans Art Nemitz (Norman), an award-winning actor whose experience encompasses more than 40 years; Matt McCormick (Charlie), who was in last season s production of Duck Hunter Shoots Angel; and Evan Shoemaker (Billy), an active sixth grader who was in last year s production of The Nerd. Making their Civic debuts are Allison Crockett (Ethel), a retired teacher who has performed locally at the Barn Theatre and Whole Art Theatre; Kim M. Brown (Bill), who has been heard on voice-overs and as a radio station DJ; Brigette Morrison Sitarski (Chelsea), a St. Louis native who has amassed an impressive list of performance credits; and Marianna Paggione (Operator), who has performed on stage in Paw Paw and Vicksburg. Park St. CASTING Seeking 12 actors to play a variety of roles, as well as a full complement of technical crews. REQUIREMENTS Those auditioning, ages 9 to high school seniors will be asked to read from the script. On Saturday, January 12th we ll be offering another installment of the popular Inside the Civic program. Designed to help volunteers prepare for upcoming productions, this insightful workshop will focus on The Odd Couple, The Foursome, Hollywood Arms, Little Women, Holes and Look Homeward, Angel. Also, I hope you ll join our Artistin-Residence, Cheryl Blaylock as she shares with our community her expertise in puppetry. Park St. CASTING Seeking six men who able to play between years old and two women who are able to play between mid-20s to 40 years old. 3 Welcoming Artist-in-Residence Cheryl Blaylock for the presentation of Avenue Q A must-see Comedy january 18 - february 2 parish theatre musical COLOR PRINTING PROVIDED BY RIVER RUN PRESS CHERYL BLAYLOCK We are very happy to welcome Artist-in-Residence Cheryl Blaylock to the Civic. Cheryl will be coming to Kalamazoo to train the Avenue Q cast members in the art of puppetry. In addition to our staff and the volunteers directly involved with this terrific production, members of the community will have the opportunity to get to know this multi-talented artist through a series of workshops, classes, dinners and post-show talk backs. An award-winning designer and puppeteer, Cheryl s television credits include Eureeka s Castle, Blue s Room, Bear in the Big Blue House and Sesame Street, for which she won an Emmy Award. Her film work includes Dark Crystal and Muppets Take Manhattan. Cheryl s training has included working closely with Jim Henson and Frank Oz. A much sought after artist, Cheryl has presented workshops on puppetry in Scotland, Switzerland and throughout the United States. PUPPETRY for TELEVISION (adult puppetry workshop) When: Saturday, January 26th, 10:00am to 1:00pm Where: Kalamazoo College Television Studio Fee: $30 Maximum Enrollment: 8 students Prerequisite: Acting experience in at least one Civic production. Advanced puppetry techniques will be covered including puppets performed by multiple puppeteers, bunraku, and green screen technology. Scripts from various television productions will be used as well as original material created in the class. Behnd-the-scenes videos from several puppet television productions from The Muppet Show to Blue s Clues will be studied and explained. INTRODUCTION to PUPPETRY (youth puppetry workshop) When: Saturday, February 2nd, 10:00am to 12:15pm Where: Carver Center Studio Fee: $25 (includes materials) Maximum Enrollment: 20 students (age 9 to 18) Prerequisite: Acting experience in at least one CYT or Civic Mainstage/Parish production. Participants are led in a series of theatrical exercises designed to invigorate the body and stimulate the imagination. The exerises lead to a closed-eye process where participants are guided on an imaginative journey. Out of these imaginary images a story is crafted, puppets and/or masks and costumes are built and a presentation (usually 5-10 minutes) is performed at the end of the workshop. A short presentation to parents will be presented at 12:00.
