2 Louis de Caix d Hervelois (circa ) Although Louis de Caix d Hervelois was one o the greatest French viol virtuosi o his day, very little is known o his origins or his ersonal lie It is widely acceted that he studied with the great arin arais He is known chiely or eight ublished collections o ieces: ive or (one and two) viols and three or lute (à un dessus: or uer wind instruent ) with igured bass O these, the ive collections Pièces de viole (ublished over a eriod o soe thirty years) are his ost iortant legacy Caix did not hold a court aointent unlike other ebers o the Lyon branch o the Caix aily to which he ay have been related He reained an indeendent usician and cooser who earned his living through the atronage o nobles and his own coosition, erorance and teaching Le Blanc (1740) situated hi next to arin arais ( ) and the elder Forqueray (Antoine Forqueray ) in order o ranking in l eire de la viole Recent research establishes his birth circa 180 in Aiens (northern France) and his death, 1759, in Paris at his aartent in the Rue du our (oosite the ortals o l église de Saint-Eustache), where he had been living or ore than thirty years Here, his hoe was in the sae building as that o his great riend, the roliic cooser and lautist (also a usette layer o note) oseh Bodin de Boisortier ( ) He too was an indeendent usician and the irst French cooser to eloy the Italian concerto or Caix aears to have reained an adet o the artists quarter o Paris between the Rue Saint-Honoré and l église des Halles or all his years in the caital This district was a hive o artistic creativity in which dancers, usicians, artists and dealers (in both art and usic anuscrits) lived and worked The two riends obviously inluenced each other s work The virtuoso string layer would edit the anuscrits written by the virtuoso wind layer and vice versa Caix' graceul elodic usic lies well within the French tradition o character ieces o this eriod In his irst two books, he still relects arais inluence and At this tie usette ilied the usette de cour (or Baroque usette), a eber o the bagie aily o instruents Subsequently the chanter was used alone with a double reed inserted directly (hautbois de Poitou) Around 1830 it started to be known as the oboe usette, subsequently iccolo oboe, even iccoloboe Today it is known, or the ost art, as the usette It is a conusing word; a dance, well-liked at the Courts o both Louis XIV and XV, bore the sae nae This usette was a gentle Gavotte, astoral in nature, which iitated a bagie above a drone Fro ballet, it also rolierated in keyboard usic

3 redilection or grandeur, a ashion inherited ro the revious century He really ound his true style when relecting the new taste or what is known as la etite anière With the accession o the young Louis XV, a new elegance ounded uon leeting leasures and sohistication saw its day in all things artistic: ro usic to ashion and art; ro interior decoration and urniture to deeanour, everything becae ore intiate usic ollowed suit with shorter oveents irroring the huan sirit in descritive sketches Fashion was ornate, theatrical, detailed and troe l oeil was at its zenith Caix was in his eleent His genius or ainting the iniature (even the ironical caricature) in usic blossoed Nature in all its beauty and atters astoral were celebrated and extolled ennier Paull 1997 La Gracieuse Hautbois et basse continue TG 001 This suite is selected reely ro Louis de Caix d Hervelois ive books o Pieces de viole (collections o viol usic with igured bass), or the ost art ro the second and ith Caix d Hervelois lived or any years at the sae address as his close riend oseh Bodin de Boisortier ( ), the celebrated lautist and ruitul cooser Each wrote or the other s instruents and noted on their scores that yet ore could be eloyed or their interretation, as was the custo Undoubtedly, aart ro the letters and verses they enned to each other (which still exist), the close riends layed uch chaber usic It is known that Boisortier s work or viol (dedicated to arin arais) was edited by Caix d Hervelois Thus the riends colicity is an established act According to the ractice o the tie, the erorer was ree to adat the Pièces de viole to suit other suitable instruents and their inherent ossibilities Fro the wealth o aterial available, I have selected a variety o oveents ideally suited to the ebers o the Bande de hautbois (an instruental enseble, including bassoons, that originated at the Court o Louis VIX) y choice to

4 reeat one o these oveents, with diering ornaentation, is entirely within the stylistic tradition The titles o the oveents are original I have sily chosen one to deict the suite in ortraiture, rather in the anner o ean- Antoine Watteau ( ) who seciically created the ête galante style in Art The title La Gracieuse eans The Graceul Lady, any o who he and other artists o the eriod ortrayed so agniicently La Déclaration d aour, by ean-françois de Troy ( ), another such artist well-known or his ortraits, is the ainting reresented on the cover o y recording o this work The double dot was not yet in existence The (single) dotted note was custoarily held longer than today: soewhat siilarly to the anner o the resent double dot - although less recisely atheatical and ore oen to ersonal interretation The ollowing seiquavers (sixteenth notes) or deiseiquavers (thirty-second notes) were layed as an u beat to the next note o iortance I ind our resent notations (with the igure 3 to indicate a trilet), thereore, to be incorrect and too recise I have chosen to adot the style o the tie to give the eeling o a held note ro which one oves orward rather than notate it in the recise anner o today (naturally, this also alies to other roortions o these note values) For today s interretation o a single dot, the word inégal (uneven) was oten inserted as a directive The oosite, égal, ilied laying the notes evenly (as written) To quote ichel de l'ailard (circa ) in his book Princies très aciles our bien arendre la usique (a ost successul work ublished in ourteen editions between 197 to 1747), One learns better by exale than by any written dissertation I trust, thereore, that the nuances o inégalité and ornaentation will be ore easily ollowed on y recording than by lengthy technical exlanation on this age Naturally, erorers are totally at liberty to create their own irovisations Our interretation is written out or those who are not secialists in this doain Those who are will be able to irovise their own versions ro the bass line and igures The realisation by Christine Sartoretti was based uon the cooser s original igured bass In 2010 I re-edited y original versions or
