3 by Gerald Martin Wednesday, May 27 7:00 pm Americas Society and Alfred A. Knopf are pleased to present a program celebrating Gerald Martin's superbly narrated biography of the world-famous Colombian author, Gabriel García Márquez: A Life. An acknowledged authority on Latin American literature, Martin is Andrew W. Mellon Professor Emeritus of Modern Languages at the University of Pittsburgh and Senior Research Professor in Caribbean Studies at London Metropolitan University. Considered by García Márquez to be his "official" biographer, Martin met and conducted interviews with the novelist at regular intervals throughout his 17- year research period for the book, a unique literary achievement that will certainly delight readers for years to come. In this much-anticipated event, he will discuss and read from the biography, which recounts the tension in García Márquez's life between celebrity and literary quality as well as between politics and writing. Please culture@americas-society.org or call (212) ext. 1. Americas Society gratefully acknowledges the following donors for their generous support of the Literature program: Honorary Benefactor Amalia Lacroze de Fortabat; the Reed Foundation; the National Endowment for the Arts; the Québec Government Office in New York; the Association internationale des études québécoises. 6 Members-only reception to follow. Dias & Riedweg... and it becomes something else Curated by Gabriela Rangel On view: May 12, August 1, 2009 Gallery Hours: Wednesday - Saturday, 12:00 pm - 6:00 pm Americas Society is proud to announce Dias & Riedweg...and it becomes something else, the first U.S. exhibition by Mauricio Dias and Walter Riedweg, a duo of internationally recognized Swiss and Brazilian artists based in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Curated by Gabriela Rangel, the exhibition features five video and installation projects that examine the dichotomy between the private and the public spheres in different contexts. According to Rangel, "Dias & Riedwig's nomadic practice tackles social political issues through a poetic fusion of video, ethnography, and performance art, opening up new lines of thought about human interaction and identity across borders. This exhibition is an exceptional opportunity to consider seminal works that are central to contemporary art and have only previously been accessible to the circuit of art biennials." Dias & Riedweg have collaborated for 16 years on multidisciplinary projects in Brazil, Europe, the United States, and the Middle East in which they have tested the critical potential of the moving image, using video to delve into the relationship between ethics and aesthetics and art and politics. Directly involving both the subject and the viewer in their pieces, they sidestep traditional ethnographic documentation to examine spaces of subjectivity in a globalized, technologically-mediated world. Dias & Riedweg have garnered international recognition for their projects at prestigious venues such as the Documenta 12 (Cassel, Germany, 2007), the Venice Biennale (2007), InSITE (San Diego-Tijuana, 2000), and the São Paulo Biennale (1998). Panel discussion Optical Drama and Residual Modernities Tuesday, May 19 6:30 pm
7 The Speakers: Artists Mauricio Dias and Walter Riedweg, Beatriz Jaguaribe (Associate Professor, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro), John Hanhardt (Consulting Senior Curator for Film and Media Arts, Smithsonian American Art Museum) and Curator Gabriela Rangel. Moderated by Heike Arzápalo (independent critic and filmmaker) The speakers will discuss the role of the moving image in de-constructing discourses of modernity. This event is part of the exhibition Dias & Riedweg...and it becomes something else, on view at Americas Society from May 12 to August 1, Please reserve by to or call (212) ext. 3. Americas Society gratefully acknowledges the following donors for their generous support of the exhibition Dias & Riedweg...and it becomes something else, and accompanying public programs: Rockefeller Brothers Fund; Pro Helvetia Swiss Arts Council; Consulate General of Brazil in New York; and Consulate General of Switzerland in New York. These programs are also made possible in part with public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs.
