1 Programme information Saturday 16 December to Friday 22 December 2017 WEEK 51 Photo credit: Arnaud Stephenson THE FULL WORKS CONCERT: THE SIXTEEN AT CHRISTMAS Wednesday 20 December, 8pm to 10pm One of the world s foremost chamber choirs, The Sixteen (above), treat Classic FM listeners to another exclusive concert, recorded at St Luke s Church in Battersea. The Voices of Classic FM perform a programme packed with a beautifully festive collection of music, composed from the 16 th century right up to the present day. We ll also hear one of Classic FM s 25 th Birthday Commissions, written specially for The Sixteen by promising young composer Marco Galvani. His work On Christmas Morn was composed to celebrate Classic FM s 25 th birthday earlier this year. Classic FM is available across the UK on FM, DAB digital radio and TV, at ClassicFM.com and on the Classic FM app. 1
2 WEEK 51 SATURDAY 16 DECEMBER 5pm: SATURDAY NIGHT AT THE MOVIES with ANDREW COLLINS To mark Steven Spielberg s birthday this coming Monday, Andrew Collins presents two hours of music from his finest movies. Focusing on Spielberg s long collaboration with composer John Williams, which spans over four decades, Andrew will include firm favourites such as E.T. and Jurassic Park, along with some lesser-played gems like Close Encounters of the Third Kind,1941 and more recently, Lincoln and The BFG. 7pm: ALEX JAMES S DATE NIGHT Tonight, Alex James marks the premiere of Dvorak s famous Symphony No.9 ( From the New World ). He ll discover how the folk melodies of the Appalachian mountains are used to popular effect and what audiences thought at the work s first outing in New York. There are birthdays for two outstanding British early-music specialists conductor Trevor Pinnock and trumpeter Crispian Steele-Perkins and Alex gets the chance to play some fantastic Christmas music as both Tchaikovsky s Nutcracker and John Tavener s The Lamb were premiered in this week in history. Plus, another piece forever associated with Christmas, Prokofiev s Lieutenant Kije Suite, is heard for the first time, but not in the concert hall. 2
3 SUNDAY 17 DECEMBER 7pm: DAVID MELLOR The tree is up, the decorations are in place, and David Mellor is here to provide the final touches for that festive feeling, with a Christmas Light Music special. David has plenty of festive treats in store, including Leroy Anderson s Sleigh Ride and other favourites performed by the legendary Boston Pops Orchestra. Plus he ll be uncovering the Christmas talents of Wales s favourite bass-baritone, Sir Bryn Terfel. 9pm: EVERYTHING YOU EVER WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT CLASSICAL MUSIC with CATHERINE BOTT Last night, the winner of this year s Strictly Come Dancing was revealed in Blackpool. So tonight, Catherine Bott presents a Strictly Partying special, exploring different styles of dance music. She promises to include the tango, samba, jive, foxtrot, waltz, polka and let s not forget the conga! Punch not provided, but a good time is guaranteed. 3
4 MONDAY 18 DECEMBER 8pm: THE FULL WORKS CONCERT: A CLASSIC EXCLUSIVE THE LORD S TAVERNERS CHRISTMAS CONCERT Earlier this month, the Lord s Taveners 2017 Christmas Carol Concert with the Stars was recorded for exclusive broadcast on Classic FM. Tonight, hear Nicholas Cleobury conduct the St Marylebone Parish Church and Intermusica choirs in an evening of festive carols for all the family, beginning in traditional fashion with Once in Royal David s City. In addition to seasonal carols and plenty of Christmas cheer, there are readings from special guests, including Patricia Hodge, Sir Richard Stilgoe and Lord Digby Jones. Jane Jones presents this exclusive concert, raising money to give disadvantaged and disabled young people a sporting chance. Programme includes: Once in Royal David s City, Adam Lay y Bounden, It Came Upon a Midnight Clear, A Tender Shoot, In the Bleak Midwinter, Rocking Carol, The Holly and the Ivy, O Come all ye Faithful, Hark the Herald Angels Sing. 5 TUESDAY 19 DECEMBER 8pm: THE FULL WORKS CONCERT: A HALLE CHRISTMAS Tonight s Full Works Concert brings the city of Manchester s biggest musical family together, as the Halle Orchestra are joined not just by the Halle Choir, but their superb Youth Choir and Children s Choir, too. From sumptuous orchestral arrangements of well-loved classical works under the Halle s Music Director Sir Mark Elder, to joyful carols performed by the massed choirs, there s much to enjoy in this showcase of some of the city s finest musicians. 8 THURSDAY 21 DECEMBER 8pm: THE FULL WORKS CONCERT: CHRISTMAS IN BOSTON Catherine Bott presents a toe-tapping Christmas fiesta courtesy of one of the most energetic orchestras in the world: the Boston Pops Orchestra. Recordedlive in Boston s Symphony Hall, tonight s concert features lush arrangements, bold brass, and joyful sing-alongs, led by the Tanglewood Festival Chorus. There are festive favourites such as Hark! The Herald Angels Sing and Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer as you ve never heard them before, and seasonal classics like Leroy Anderson s Sleigh Ride that will serve as the perfect accompaniment to presentwrapping and tree-decorating. In a showcase of the variety of Boston s musical talent, Catherine features the Orchestra s performance of the suite from Tchaikovsky s Sleeping Beauty, and some very regal firework music from Boston Baroque. 9 FRIDAY 22 DECEMBER 8pm: THE FULL WORKS CONCERT: A VIENNESE CHRISTMAS Tonight, Catherine Bott takes listeners to the Christmas markets and snow-capped mountains of Austria, with a Viennese Christmas special. There s no better trio than Placido Domingo, Luciano Pavarotti and Jose Carreras to lead favourites such as O Tannenbaum and Let it Snow, with sterling accompaniment from the Vienna Symphony Orchestra in live concert recordings. The famous Vienna Boys Choir provide a more traditional approach to proceedings with some best-loved traditional carols, and there s the perfect party music to waltz away to, courtesy of Johann Strauss Junior. We ll also enjoy sleigh bells galore from Mozart, alongside Hely-Hutchinson s playful Carol Symphony on this, the last Friday before Christmas. (arr.
