2 WEEK 24 SATURDAY 9 JUNE 5pm to 7pm: SATURDAY NIGHT AT THE MOVIES with ANDREW COLLINS Andrew Collins presents another composer spotlight show, this time starting by spending an hour surveying Henry Mancini s film scores, from The Pink Panther to Breakfast at Tiffany s. Later in the programme, Andrew turns to rock-star-turned-composer Clint Mansell, whose movie music includes Requiem for a Dream, Black Swan and Loving Vincent. 7pm to 9pm: COWAN S CLASSICS with ROB COWAN Rob Cowan presents a journey of musical discovery and this week, John Williams best-loved film score for E.T. is the starting point as he takes us Beyond the Hall of Fame. Meanwhile, Rob s Artist of the Week is the pianist, conductor and composer André Previn. 9pm to 10pm: DAVID MELLOR S LIGHT MUSIC MASTERS Tonight, David spends two hours in the company of the greatest Italian Light Music Masters. There will be music from the versatile Ennio Morricone, who celebrates his 90 th birthday later this year, plus old favourites and lesser-known discoveries by another film composer: Nino Rota. 2

3 SUNDAY 10 MAY 3pm to 5pm: CHARLOTTE HAWKINS Charlotte plays the perfect selection of Classic FM favourites and new discoveries, with a particular focus on young artists. Today s Young Classical Star has been acclaimed by critics worldwide for his exceptional talent and magnificent tone: the 22-year-old American violinist Chad Hoopes. He s been described by the Washington Post as having jaw-dropping virtuosity but also a gift for dramatic pacing and a distinctive, convincing sense of poetry and Charlotte will feature some of his finest recordings this afternoon. 7pm to 9pm: DAVID MELLOR As the summer holidays draw nearer, David presents two hours of perfect summer music. There will be pastoral music from English composer Frederick Delius; Ravel s Introduction & Allegro, which he wrote at breakneck speed so he could embark on a boating holiday with his friends; and Hugo Alfven s best known work: the Midsummer Vigil. 9pm to 10pm: EVERYTHING YOU EVER WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT CLASSICAL MUSIC with CATHERINE BOTT The international superstar Judy Garland was born on this day in 1922, so Catherine marks the anniversary by celebrating the most versatile of performers who have excelled in singing and acting. As a critic for The Guardian wrote about Bryn Terfel s performance in Sweeney Todd, if an opera singer can perform musical theatre, go for it, but if a musical theatre actor can t sing and can t act, I think they d be better off staying away from those who can. Catherine explores just what it takes to be able to make the leap from, say, musical to opera, or opera to another genre altogether, featuring hand-picked recordings by the likes of Renee Fleming, Julie Andrews and Mario Lanza. 3

4 MONDAY 11 JUNE 8pm to 10pm: THE FULL WORKS CONCERT LIVE FROM CARNEGIE HALL, NEW YORK Over the next three nights, Jane Jones presents a selection of concerts featuring some of the finest musicians, conductors, orchestras and repertoire, recorded live at Carnegie Hall in New York. Tonight s concert opens with one of the most famous melodies in all American music, followed by the legendary Daniel Barenboim performing Mozart s Coronation Piano Concerto. We ll also hear a selection of favourite dances from around the world, with Gustavo Dudamel conducting the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela, including the thrilling Mambo from Leonard Bernstein s West Side Story. 5 TUESDAY 11 JUNE 8pm to 10pm: THE FULL WORKS CONCERT LIVE FROM CARNEGIE HALL, NEW YORK Jane Jones takes another trip over the Atlantic Ocean to New York, as she presents a second evening of live concert recordings from Carnegie Hall. Tonight s concert features two monumental pieces: the first, a fine interpretation of Chopin s Piano Concerto No.1, which he composed at the age of just 20, featuring the flourishing 27-year-old Russian pianist Daniil Trifonov; and the second, Sir Simon Rattle conducting the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra in a complete performance of Brahms s evergreen Symphony No.2. 6 WEDNESDAY 13 JUNE 8pm to 10pm: THE FULL WORKS CONCERT LIVE FROM CARNEGIE HALL, NEW YORK Jane Jones presents a third evening of live concert recordings from Carnegie Hall, New York. We open with a Classic FM favourite: Gershwin s Rhapsody in Blue. Later, we ll hear a beautiful Bach s violin concerto featuring the soloist Viktoria Mullova, after which the Latvian conductor Mariss Jansons leads the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra in Beethoven s mighty Symphony No.3 ( Eroica ). To round off tonight s concert, we ll hear American violinist Joshua Bell alongside pianist Jeremy Denk with a performance of Richard Strauss s Violin Sonata in E-flat major. 7 THURSDAY 14 JUNE 8pm to 10pm: THE FULL WORKS CONCERT THE WORLD CUP 2018 Earlier today, the 21 st FIFA World Cup kicked off in Russia and tonight, Catherine Bott celebrates by featuring classical music with a football-themed twist! In 1998, France hosted and ultimately won the FIFA World Cup. Rather fittingly, as we ll hear tonight, a piece by the French composer Gabriel Faure also acted as the soundtrack to the media coverage. Further highlights include music from this year s host country, Russia; Elmer Bernstein s The Great Escape, which has become an English supporters favourite; and a musical nod to the 2014 winners, Spain. To close tonight s concert, we ll hear Around The World, sung by The Three Tenors and recorded live in concert during the 1994 FIFA World Cup. 8 FRIDAY 15 JUNE 8pm to 10pm: THE FULL WORKS CONCERT GRIEG 175 On this day in 1843, the Norwegian composer was born in Bergen. To mark the 175 th anniversary of his birth, Catherine Bott presents an evening of Grieg s finest masterpieces. The composer s fiesty March of the Trolls opens tonight s concert, followed by one of his most famous works: the Peer Gynt Suite No.1. We ll also hear a fantastic recording of Grieg s one and only Piano Concerto by Lars Vogt alongside Simon Rattle and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra.
