1 Programme information Saturday 30 June to Friday 6 July 2018 WEEK 27 NEW SERIES THE JOY OF BERNSTEIN with HUMPHREY BURTON Saturday 30 th June, 9pm to 10pm Humphrey Burton presents a brand-new series on Classic FM, celebrating one of the 20 th century s most famous and influential musicians: Leonard Bernstein. As Bernstein s official biographer, Humphrey offers an unparalleled insight into the life and music of the outstanding composer, conductor and pianist in this, his centenary year. 2 WEEK 27 SATURDAY 30 JUNE 5pm to 7pm: SATURDAY NIGHT AT THE MOVIES with ANDREW COLLINS The composer Bernard Herrmann was born on 29 th June 1911, so Andrew Collins marks the anniversary with two hours of his greatest scores. There will be music from films such as Citizen Kane and Taxi Driver; and Andrew will also explore Hermann s influential collaboration with director Alfred Hitchcock, for silver screen classics like Vertigo, North by Northwest and Psycho. 7pm to 9pm: COWAN S CLASSICS with ROB COWAN Rob Cowan presents two hours of hand-picked recordings from his collection. Rob s Artist of the Week is the pianist Evgeny Kissin and the Russian s recordings of works by Chopin, Liszt and Beethoven will be included. The starting point as Rob takes us Beyond the Hall of Fame is the Flower Duet by Leo Delibes. NEW SERIES 9pm to 10pm: THE JOY OF BERNSTEIN with HUMPHREY BURTON Humphrey Burton presents a brand-new series on Classic FM, celebrating one of the 20 th century s most famous and influential musicians: Leonard Bernstein. As Bernstein s official biographer, Humphrey offers an unparalleled insight into the life and music of the outstanding composer, conductor and pianist in this, his centenary year. Bernstein the composer was able to turn his hand to many musical forms from large scale orchestral works, to chamber pieces, to music theatre. Tonight, Humphrey begins the series by selecting works that demonstrate this varied range. Included are favourite songs from musicals and an orchestral waltz reminiscent of Tchaikovsky. Plus, Humphrey will feature a very special recording of Bernstein the pianist peforming Ravel, a recording of Bernstein the conductor from a visit to London in 1946 and one of the maestro s signature works: Beethoven s Symphony No.5. 2

3 SUNDAY 1 JULY 3pm to 5pm: CHARLOTTE HAWKINS Join Charlotte for two hours of Classic FM favourites and new discoveries. Today s Young Classical Star is a pianist who has been described as brilliant by the New York Times and as an artist to be taken seriously by the Chicago Tribune: Elizabeth Joy Roe. This afternoon, Charlotte features an exquisite recording from her 2016 album, Field: Nocturnes. 7pm to 9pm: DAVID MELLOR It s the weekend before American Indepence Day, so tonight David Mellor s musical selection is from the other side of the pond. He features favourite marches by John Philip Sousa, a medley of Leroy Anderson s greatest music, and some outstanding performances from some of the USA s finest artists and orchestras. 9pm to 10pm: EVERYTHING YOU EVER WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT CLASSICAL MUSIC with CATHERINE BOTT The American dancer and choreographer Twyla Tharp turns 77 today, so Catherine Bott marks the occasion with a celebration of women choreographers who have shaped the world of dance. Catherine features Tharp s work with Philip Glass, In the Upper Room, and also includes music by Rogers & Hammerstein, Poulenc and Gluck, associated with Agnes de Mille, Bronislava Nijinska and Pina Bausch respectively. 3

4 MONDAY 2 JULY 8pm to 10pm: THE FULL WORKS CONCERT: GREAT COMPOSERS MONTH WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZART It s Great Composers Month on Classic FM: every weeknight in July, the spotlight will be shone on one of the world s finest composers, showcasing some of their best music and telling the story of their life. The series begins with a composer who needs very little introduction: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Jane Jones presents an evening of joyous, masterful and brilliant music, beginning with the overture to his ever popular opera: Don Giovanni. The Clarinet Concerto in A is a piece that features in the top 10 of the Classic FM Hall of Fame and tonight it s played by the young British clarinetist, Julian Bliss. We ll also hear Piotr Anderszewski at the piano for a performance of Mozart s Piano Concerto No.20, which follows the last symphony the composer ever wrote. 5 TUESDAY 3 JULY 8pm to 10pm: THE FULL WORKS CONCERT: GREAT COMPOSERS MONTH FREDERIC CHOPIN The Polish virtuoso and composer Frederic Chopin is next in the spotlight, as Great Composers Month continue on Classic FM. Hear why many think of him as king of the piano through recordings made by his greatest admirers, including Daniel Barenboim, Maurizio Pollini and Martha Argerich, the soloist in his Piano Concerto No.1. Plus there s Joshua Bell s take on one of the composer s most famous nocturnes, and the iconic duo of Jacqueline du Pre and Daniel Barenboim as they pair together to perform Chopin s Cello Sonata in G minor. 6 WEDNESDAY 4 JULY 8pm to 10pm: THE FULL WORKS CONCERT: GREAT COMPOSERS MONTH GEORGE GERSHWIN Jane Jones invites you to join her for the third evening of Great Composers Month on Classic FM, as she presents two hours of joyous music by George Gershwin marks 120 years since the American composer was born and tonight a vast selection of Gershwin s most popular works are featured. The programme starts with a Broadway favourite, An American in Paris, followed by the great Harolyn Blackwell singing Summertime from his opera Porgy & Bess. Despite being a pianist and writing countless pieces for piano, Gershwin only composed one full-scale concerto for the instrument, which is performed by Jean-Yves Thibaudet under Marin Alsop with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. Arrangements of the composer s work also feature the song Someone to Watch Over Me is played on the trumpet by Alison Balsom; more music from Porgy and Bess is performed by Wayne Marshall and the Aalborg Symphony Orchestra; and, to close the concert, a breezy arrangement of Walking the Dog for clarinet and string quartet. 7 THURSDAY 5 JULY 8pm to 10pm: THE FULL WORKS CONCERT: GREAT COMPOSERS MONTH JOSEPH HAYDN Tonight, Catherine Bott continues Classic FM s Great Composers Month by shining the spotlight on the composer who dominated the Classical period and whose work was prolific, earning him the title The Father of the Symphony : Joseph Haydn. Catherine demonstrates Haydn s masterful ability to turn his hand to writing for either orchestra or solo instruments. The composer s most popular concerto is, perhaps surprisingly, written for the trumpet hear why it s so beloved in a top-drawer recording featuring Maurice Andre. Haydn s joyful Cello Concerto No.1, performed by Corinne Morris, is also on the bill as is Alexandre Tharaud s account of the Keyboard Concerto in D. The centrepiece of tonight s programme is one of the ever popular London Symphonies the Clock. 8 FRIDAY 6 JULY 8pm to 10pm: THE FULL WORKS CONCERT: GREAT COMPOSERS MONTH RALPH VAUGHAN WILLIAMS It s Great Composers Month on Classic FM and tonight Catherine Bott champions one of the most successful British composers of the 20th century Ralph Vaughan Williams. He could master moods from stormy and impassioned to tranquil and mysterious, which is evident through the music on offer tonight as Catherine features a varied selection of Vaughan Williams most popular works. And it s an all British affair tonight, as some of our nation s greatest orchestras including the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra and City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra play Vaughan Williams greatest works. These include the overture the composer penned as part of the incidental music for a production of Aristophanes The Wasps, as well as the most frequently performed of his nine symphonies No.5. There s also a chance to hear Nigel Kennedy perform The Lark Ascending, a former number one in the Classic FM Hall of Fame.
