And yes, you re going to need a bigger boat. 7pm to 9pm: COWAN s CLASSICS with ROB COWAN Rob Cowan presents two hours of classical discoveries, including the Sure Shot: Rob s recommended new release, which he s tipping for great things. His Artist of the Week is the mezzo-soprano Teresa Berganza and one of Elgar s most popular works, the Cello Concerto, is the starting point as Rob takes us Beyond the Hall of Fame. 9pm to 10pm: LEONARD BERNSTEIN S JOY OF MUSIC with HUMPHREY BURTON Humphrey Burton continues Classic FM s brand new series, celebrating one of the 20 th century s most famous and influential musicians: Leonard Bernstein. Tonight, Humphrey features a very rare recording of Bernstein s miniature song cycle, La Bonne Cuisine a fun take on a more serious song cycle by Gabriel Faure. Bernstein wrote his own witty translations of four French recipes originally published by Émile Dumont in 1890: Plum Pudding, Ox-tails, Tavouk Guenksis (a Turkish dish) and Rabbit at Top Speed, and tonight we hear them performed by American soprano Roberta Alexander. Later in the programme, Humphrey features a ballad originally composed by Bernstein for his newborn daughter Jamie, which he later incorporated into his Broadway musical Wonderful Town. 2

3 SUNDAY 15 JULY 3pm to 5pm: CHARLOTTE HAWKINS When Fabio Martino began playing his grandmother s piano at the age of 5, he probably didn t realise that it would lead to winning more than 20 first prizes in competitions around the world. Since that first foray into playing the instrument, Martino has wowed audiences with his talent and his charm and this afternoon, Charlotte showcases the life and music of the young Brazilian pianist: her Young Classical Star this week. 9pm to 10pm: EVERYTHING YOU EVER WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT CLASSICAL MUSIC with CATHERINE BOTT 2018 marks the centenary of the death of the composer, teacher and historian of music, Hubert Parry. Catherine Bott devotes tonight s programme to exploring his life and music, demonstrating there s more to Parry than Jerusalem and showcasing a recently released recording of his string quartets. 3

4 MONDAY 16 JULY 8pm to 10pm: THE FULL WORKS CONCERT: GREAT COMPOSERS MONTH FEMALE COMPOSERS It s Great Composers Month on Classic FM and, to mark the halfway point in our celebrations, Jane Jones profiles some of the greatest female composers, spanning nine centuries from Hildegard von Bingen in the 1100s to 21 st century composers such as Rachel Portman and Anne Dudley. There s music by Fanny Mendelssohn we ll hear one of the first pieces to be published under her own name, just a year before her death alongside Clara Schumann, Rebecca Clarke, Florence Price and Louise Farrenc. Handel s Coronation Anthem Zadok the Priest opens our concert, followed by the composer s Water Music Suite No.1 premiered on a barge on the River Thames on this day in We ll also enjoy ballet music from Handel s first opera which he composed at the age of just 19 years old. 8 WEDNESDAY 18 JULY 8pm to 10pm: THE FULL WORKS CONCERT: GREAT COMPOSERS MONTH LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN It s Great Composers Month on Classic FM: every weeknight in July, we celebrate one of the world s finest classical composers, showcasing some of their best music and telling the story of their life. Tonight, Jane Jones shines the spotlight on a true revolutionary: Ludwig van Beethoven. Tonight's concert begins with a work that includes the most famous opening notes in all classical music: Beethoven s Symphony No.5. Later in the evening, Maxim Vengerov performs the Romance No.2 alongside the London Symphony Orchestra under Mstislav Rostropovich and to close the programme, Alfred Brendel treats us to a flawless performance of Beethoven s mighty Emperor Concerto. 9 THURSDAY 19 JULY 8pm to 10pm: THE FULL WORKS CONCERT: GREAT COMPOSERS MONTH FRANZ SCHUBERT Tonight, it s Schubert s turn in the spotlight for Classic FM s Great Composers Month, as Rob Cowan presents some of the best-known works he composed during the 19th century. Rob bookends tonight s concert with two famous symphonies. The first, Schubert s joyous Symphony No.5 written when he was just a teenager and the second, the composer s innovative final symphony, No.9. In between these mighty works, Myung Whun Chung plays the lyrical Impromptu in G-flat major, and the great tenor Luciano Pavarotti performs one of Schubert s most-loved works: his setting of the Ave Maria. 10 FRIDAY 20 JULY 8pm to 10pm: THE FULL WORKS CONCERT: GREAT COMPOSERS MONTH CAMILLE SAINT-SAENS Tonight, it s the turn of French composer Camille Saint-Saens to take centre stage, as Rob Cowan presents another Great Composers Full Works Concert on Classic FM. We begin with Saint-Saens haunting Danse Macabre, followed by his virtuosic Introduction & Rondo Capriccioso. Further highlights include Saint-Saens epic Organ Symphony, and the famous dance from his opera Samson & Delilah.
