1 Programme information Saturday 13 January to Friday 19 January 2018 WEEK 03 Copyright: Gerardo Mora / Getty Images 2017 THE FULL WORKS CONCERT: GREAT COMPOSERS MONTH JOHN WILLIAMS Friday 19 January, 8pm to 10pm Tonight, Catherine Bott celebrates one of the world s most successful and best loved composers of film music: John Williams (above). Over two hours, Catherine will play some of the greatest movie scores ever written, opening with perhaps Williams most iconic: Star Wars. We ll then hear his other hit themes, including Harry Potter and the Philosopher s Stone and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, before violinist Gil Shaham performs the achingly beautiful theme to Schindler s List. 2 WEEK 03 SATURDAY 13 JANUARY 5pm to 7pm: SATURDAY NIGHT AT THE MOVIES with ANDREW COLLINS To mark the release of The Post the new Steven Spielberg film telling the real-life story of the Washington Post s 1971 legal battle to publish damning classified information Andrew Collins presents a show based on films in which truth is stranger than fiction. Featuring Howard Shore s music from Spotlight, Hans Zimmer s score for Frost/Nixon, and Thomas Newman s music for Erin Brokovich, Andrew will also play selections from John Williams score for The Post, the composer s 29 th collaboration with the director, in a creative partnership that began in the 1970s. 7pm to 9pm: COWAN S CLASSICS with ROB COWAN Join Rob Cowan for the second of his new Saturday evening shows: Cowan s Classics. First introduced on Classic FM 25 years ago, the programme includes Rob s Sure Shot, where he s championing a new recording by Philip Glass which he describes as like Stravinsky s Rite of Spring, with an extra spring in its step. In Beyond the Hall of Fame, Rob plays Elgar s much-loved Enigma Variations, pairing it with another fascinating Elgar discovery which is much less well-known. Rob s Artist of the Week is the Dutch conductor Bernard Haitink, and he s selected some fine recordings, including a Debussy nocturne performed by the Concertgebouw Orchestra. 9pm to 10pm: THE SOUND OF MUSIC with HOWARD GOODALL joined by ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER In the second episode of their six-part series, award-winning broadcaster and former Classic FM Composer in Residence Howard Goodall speaks to Andrew Lloyd Webber about the history of musical theatre. Tonight, the two composers chat about the differences between Broadway and the West End, with music from current hits Hamilton and Everybody s Talking About Jamie. They ll look back at the early British musicals that may have influenced a young Andrew Lloyd Webber or may have shown him what he didn t want to write! before turning to Lloyd Webber s early successes with lyricist Tim Rice: Joseph and his Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat and Jesus Christ Superstar. 2

3 SUNDAY 14 JANUARY 3pm to 5pm: CHARLOTTE HAWKINS Charlotte Hawkins presents her new Sunday afternoon show on Classic FM. Today, she ll be offering a selection of Classic FM favourites and new discoveries, with a particular focus on young artists as demonstrated in her Artist of the Week: the extraordinary 24-year-old Italian pianist Beatrice Rana. 7pm to 9pm: DAVID MELLOR Tonight, David Mellor celebrates the centenary of Sir Charles Hubert Hastings Parry and the advent of the British musical renaissance. Highlights include Parry s best-loved choral works Jerusalem and I Was Glad, along with the fantastic orchestral writing of his Symphony No.5. Plus, David showcases some of the very best music by two of Parry s star pupils: Gustav Holst and Ralph Vaughan Williams. 9pm to 10pm: EVERYTHING YOU EVER WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT CLASSICAL MUSIC with CATHERINE BOTT Catherine Bott welcomes suggestions from Classic FM s audience for subjects for her to explore. This week, she s been inspired by an from David in Cheshire, who loves Classic FM but describes himself as a complete novice in the world of classical music. David s first choice, as he explains, is jazz, and so Catherine selects music that aims to provide a bridge between jazz and classical genres from Bobby McFerrin performing Bach to Duke Ellington writing big orchestral works, with performances by Jacques Loussier thrown in for good measure too! 3

4 MONDAY 15 JANUARY MONTH DVOŘÁK It s Great Composers Month on Classic FM and tonight, Jane Jones champions one of the most successful Czech composers ever to have lived: Antonín Dvořák. A man as passionate about his homeland as his music, the concert begins with a Slavonic Dance full of national character. The composer s beautiful Violin Concerto is performed by Anne-Sophie Mutter, and there s further space for reflection with Renee Fleming s recording of Song to the Moon. The centrepiece of tonight s concert sees Marin Alsop leading the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra in the symphony that cemented Dvořák s place amongst the great composers: his Symphony No.9, From the New World. 5 TUESDAY 16 JANUARY MONTH RACHMANINOV Russian heavyweight Sergei Rachmaninov is the next composer to take centre-stage on Classic FM, as Jane Jones demonstrates that there are many sides to his varied and brilliant compositional output. Rachmaninov s Piano Concerto No.3 demands a lot of technical mastery from its soloist, and Mac-Andre Hamelin takes the challenge, accompanied by the London Philharmonic Orchestra under Vladimir Jurowski. There s more powerful playing from Classic FM s Orchestra in the North West of England as the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic performs Rachmaninov s Symphony No.2 under their Chief Conductor Vasily Petrenko, and we hear the delicate treatment of the composer s Vocalise performed by the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. 6 WEDNESDAY 17 JANUARY MONTH MOZART Tonight s musician in Great Composers Month needs very little introduction, as perhaps the most well-known composer ever to have lived: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Jane Jones presents everything that s joyous, masterful and brilliant about the legendary man s works, beginning with his Clarinet Concerto, performed by soloist Emma Johnson and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. The Freiburg Baroque Orchestra under Rene Jacobs play Mozart s last and most celebrated symphony which was lightyears ahead in its compositional style and there s a brand-new release to uncover as Piotr Anderszewski leads the Chamber Orchestra of Europe in Mozart s final piano concerto, No.27. Clarinet Concerto in A major K.622 Emma Johnson leads the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra Symphony No.41 in C major K.551 ( Jupiter ) Rene Jacobs conducts the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra Ave Verum Corpus K.618 Harry Christophers conducts the Handel and Haydn Society Piano Concerto No.27 KV 595 Piotr Anderszewski leads the Chamber Orchestra of Europe from the piano Adagio in E major K.261 Violin: Nicola Benedetti James MacMillan conducts the Academy of St Martin in the Fields 6

7 THURSDAY 18 JANUARY MONTH MENDELSSOHN Queen Victoria described Felix Mendelssohn as the greatest musical genius since Mozart and tonight, Catherine Bott demonstrates why this bold claim is entirely justified. His stunning Violin Concerto is performed by Maxim Vengerov, and Andrew Manze directs the NDR Radiophilharmonie in a sparkiling new recording of the Romantic composer s Symphony No.3 ( Scottish ). Pianist and conductor Daniel Barenboim performs Mendelssohn s Songs Without Words, and calm seas abound in the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra s performance of his work which takes its name from a Goethe poem. 8 FRIDAY 19 JANUARY MONTH JOHN WILLIAMS Great Composers Month on Classic FM is not just about composers who wore powdered wigs and rode in horse-drawn carriages. Tonight, Catherine Bott celebrates the scores of an incredibly successful composer who continues to produce awardwinning iconic music today: John Williams. Over two hours, she ll play some of his very best-loved film scores, opening with perhaps the most iconic theme ever to have been written: Star Wars. We ll then hear Williams other hit themes, including Harry Potter and the Philosopher s Stone led by the man himself and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, performed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, before violinist Gil Shaham performs his achingly beautiful theme to Schindler s List. It s not just film themes that John Williams has gained international recognition for: Catherine features Heartwood performed by Yo-Yo Ma, and American Journey a sixpart orchestral piece commissioned by President Bill Clinton for America s 2000 millennium celebrations.
