Programme information Saturday 16 September to Friday 22 September 2017 WEEK 38 Photo copyright: Press Association THE FULL WORKS CONCERT: CLASSIC FM LIVE! Wednesday 20 th September, 8pm to 10pm Classic FM Live is always a spectacular event, but last night (Tuesday 19 th September) as part of Classic FM s 25 th birthday celebrations the audience at the sold-out Royal Albert Hall was treated to a special evening dedicated to film music. Tonight, Jane Jones gives listeners the opportunity to re-live every note. Hear the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra perform iconic music from the greatest movies of all time, written by the biggest names in film scores including John Williams, Howard Shore and John Barry.
WEEK 38 SATURDAY 16 SEPTEMBER 5pm: SATURDAY NIGHT AT THE MOVIES with ANDREW COLLINS Andrew Collins presents a literary edition of Classic FM s weekly film music show, thanks to an from listener Alli in Stowmarket, who requested music from bigscreen adaptations of popular books. Alli s specific choices, Captain Corelli s Mandolin and Memoirs of a Geisha will feature, along with Dr Zhivago and A Passage to India, both Academy Award winners for composer Maurice Jarre, to mark the recent anniversary of his birth on 13 th September pm: ALEX JAMES S DATE NIGHT Join Alex James as he marks the most important dates in the classical music calendar over the week ahead. In this week in history, Giuseppe Verdi was made an honorary citizen of Turin; Engelbert Humperdinck (that s the composer, not the singer) finished work on his opera Hansel and Gretel, and the German composer Felix Mendelssohn was injured when his carriage overturned in London. Alex also finds out why, in September 1945, Chopin s heart had to be returned to its resting place in Warsaw Cathedral.
SUNDAY 17 SEPTEMBER 3pm: CHARLOTTE GREEN This week, Charlotte is joined by the legendary soprano Dame Kiri te Kanawa. Dame Kiri discusses the highlights of her phenomenal career, including singing at the Royal Wedding of The Prince of Wales and Princess Diana in 1981; performing at the 1991 Rugby World Cup; and, most recently, appearing in Downton Abbey. We ll also hear about the Kiri te Kanawa Foundation, which helps to give opportunities to young, talented singers, and enjoy some of Dame Kiri s favourite music. 7pm: DAVID MELLOR This week, David shines the spotlight on the winners of this year s prestigious Gramophone Awards, which take place in London on 13 th September. With many of the world s greatest classical musicians nominated for a gong, find out who was victorious and hear some of their finest recordings. 9pm: EVERYTHING YOU EVER WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT CLASSICAL MUSIC with CATHERINE BOTT This week, Catherine responds to a Classic FM listener who would like to know about the different dimensions of the singing voice by asking: what makes a great classical singer? From the highest notes of Mozart s Queen of the Night aria to the Russian basses of Mussorgsky, Catherine will explore the fastest coloratura and the slowest spun melodies, along with effects like vibrato and the demands of choral singing. Sing your way to the end of the weekend in the most esteemed company with Catherine Bott and some of the world s finest singers!
MONDAY 18 SEPTEMBER 8pm: THE FULL WORKS CONCERT: MUSICAL ELEGANCE On the 180 th anniversary of the founding of one of the most famous jewelers in the world, Jane Jones presents a concert full of stars who wouldn t look out of place in their very own Tiffany watch or necklace. Among classical music s elegant stars are the soprano Maria Callas, whose voice is as rich as velvet, and the choral world s very own prince charming, Eric Whitacre, who leads his singers in the atmospheric Lux Aurumque. As for well-turned-out figures from history, there s Franz Liszt, who quite literally embraced the phenomenon of the performer as a sex-symbol. Lang Lang a keen observer of style himself aptly plays Liszt s Reminiscences de Don Juan tonight. But the man Liszt learnt his showmanship from was Nicolo Paganini, whose seductive virtuosity and good looks had women fainting at his feet. Channelling Paganini s spirit, Nemanja Radulovic plays his Violin Concerto No.1. The concert opens with a whirlwind of diamonds and pearls, as the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra transports us to the glamorous ballroom scene from Tchaikovsky s Eugene Onegin. Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky Eugene Onegin Entr acte and Waltz Neeme Jarvi conducts the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra Nicolo Paganini Violin Concerto No.1 in D major Violin: Nemanja Radulovic Eiji Oue conducts the Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della RAI Giuseppe Verdi Ave Maria Soprano: Anna Netrebko Claudio Abbado conducts the Mahler Chamber Orchestra Maurice Ravel Piano Concerto in G major Piano: Yuja Wang Lionel Bringuier conducts the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich Jean Sibelius Finlandia Leonard Bernstein conducts the New York Philharmonic Orchestra Vincenzo Bellini Casta Diva Soprano: Maria Callas Tulio Serafin conducts the Orchestra of La Scala, Milan Continued overleaf

TUESDAY 19 SEPTEMBER 8pm: THE FULL WORKS CONCERT: THE SCOTTISH INTERNATIONAL PIANO COMPETITION Tonight, Jane Jones brings Classic FM listeners the nail-biting action from the final of the prestigious Scottish International Piano Competition, held in Glasgow s Royal Concert Hall last week. The Competition, now in it s 31 st year, has gained a reputation as being one of the most prestigious of its kind in Europe, and attracts some of the best young talent from around the world. Tonight, we ll hear from some of the talented finalists to make it to the very last round and with 23 pianists from 15 countries to choose from, you can be sure it s nothing but the cream of the crop. One of the honours of reaching the final is to play a full concerto or concert-piece with Classic FM s Orchestra in Scotland, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, and they appear in sparkling form as they accompany one talented young pianist to victory. Find out who, in this exclusive broadcast on Classic FM. Competition final repertoire not announced at time of writing.
WEDNESDAY 20 SEPTEMBER 8pm: THE FULL WORKS CONCERT: CLASSIC FM LIVE! Classic FM Live is always a special event in the classical calendar, but last night in the month of Classic FM s 25 th birthday the audience at the sold-out Royal Albert Hall was treated to an extra-special evening dedicated to film music. Tonight, Jane Jones gives listeners across the UK the opportunity to re-live every note of the movie musicspectacular. Hear the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra perform iconic music from the greatest movies of all time, written by the biggest names in film scores including John Williams, Howard Shore and John Barry. The Orchestra is joined by star pianist Ji Liu for Richard Addinsell s Warsaw Concerto, and, in a poignant moment, special guest Rami Basisah, who performs the theme to Schindler s List. The young violinist takes to the stage at the Hall as part of an incredible journey which started as he fled persecution in Syria in The programme includes: John Williams Superman Main Theme Howard Shore Lord of the Rings The Fellowship of the Ring Samuel Barber Adagio for Strings John Barry Out of Africa Main Title Dances with Wolves Main Title Richard Addinsell Dangerous Moonlight Warsaw Concerto Piano: Ji Liu John Williams Schindler s List Theme Violin: Rami Basisah Max Steiner Gone with the Wind Tara s Theme Violin: Rami Basisah Klaus Badelt Pirates of the Caribbean Theme John Williams 85th Birthday Celebration Medley Pete Harrison conducts the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra
THURSDAY 21 SEPTEMBER 8pm: THE FULL WORKS CONCERT: TRENDING NEAR YOU You might not have heard of SEO but it s big business in the advertising world. It allows companies to track exactly what people search in Google, so they can tailor their products. Tonight, Catherine Bott delves into the world of analytics herself, as she explores which composers come out on top in the race for most Googled. Sometimes, national events, adverts, or TV shows can lead to a leap in people heading to Google and searching for composers, and one particular name can certainly credit the USA s TV show Mozart in the Jungle for his spike in 2014, making him the most-googled composer of the decade. Mozart s not far ahead of Beethoven, however, who takes the crown when paired with the word Symphony. Tonight, we ll hear his mighty Symphony No.5, performed by Concentus Musicus Vienna under Nikolaus Harnoncourt. There s also a nod to one of Google s most beautiful Google Doodles, and the instrument which wins the title of most searched instrument by a very long way indeed: the guitar. Ludwig van Beethoven Symphony No.5 in C minor Nikolaus Harnoncourt conducts Concentus Musicus Wien Joaquin Rodrigo Concierto de Aranjuez Guitar: John Williams Eugene Ormandy conducts members of the Philadelphia Orchestra Claude Debussy Suite Bergamasque Piano: Jean-Yves Thibaudet Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Flute & Harp Concerto in C major Flute: James Galway Harp: Catrin Finch Sinfonia Varsovia
FRIDAY 22 SEPTEMBER 8pm: THE FULL WORKS CONCERT: BERNSTEIN 100 Today, a two-year, worldwide celebration of the life and career of the 20 th century cultural giant Leonard Bernstein kicks off at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington DC. With more than 1,000 events set to take place on six continents, there s certainly a lot to look forward to and tonight, Catherine Bott gives us a flavour of the extraordinary output of the great man. We ll hear Bernstein as composer, performer, and conductor in a range of pieces which show off his versatility and endless style the centrepiece of which is Brahms s mighty Symphony No.1, performed by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. It wouldn t be a true Bernstein celebration without his cherished orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, and we hear a remarkable pairing as Bernstein conducts Beethoven s Piano Concerto No.4 with soloist Glenn Gould, in a specially remastered recording. Leonard Bernstein Candide Overture Leonard Bernstein conducts the New York Philharmonic Orchestra Ludwig van Beethoven Piano Concerto No.4 in G major Piano: Glenn Gould Leonard Bernstein conducts the New York Philharmonic Orchestra Leonard Bernstein America Violin: Joshua Bell David Zinman conducts the Philharmonia Orchestra Johannes Brahms Symphony No.1 in C minor Leonard Bernstein conducts the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra George Gershwin Prelude No.2 for Piano Piano: Leonard Bernstein
