1 Programme information Saturday 6 January to Friday 12 January 2018 WEEK 02 CLASSIC FM LAUNCHES NEW WEEKEND PROGRAMMES HOSTED BY CHARLOTTE HAWKINS AND ROB COWAN, PLUS HOWARD GOODALL IN CONVERSATION WITH ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER Saturday 6 th and Sunday 7 th January 2018 The UK s most popular classical music station will kick start 2018 with new weekend programmes hosted by new presenters Charlotte Hawkins, Rob Cowan and Howard Goodall, who will be joined by Andrew Lloyd Webber for a special six-part series celebrating the history of musical theatre. 2 WEEK 02 SATURDAY 6 JANUARY 5pm to 7pm: SATURDAY NIGHT AT THE MOVIES with ANDREW COLLINS Tonight, Andrew Collins takes a look at the year ahead in the world of cinema, from the big releases, awards contenders, and most exciting film scores in store. Starting with films that are released over the coming weeks, such as Michael Giacchino s music for Coco (released 18 th January), Dario Marianelli s score for Churchill biopic Darkest Hour (released 12 th January), and Carter Burwell s music for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (released 12 th January), Andrew will then cast an eye and ear over predicted blockbusters including Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, out in June, giving the perfect opportunity to play John Williams enduring theme for the original Jurassic Park. 7pm to 9pm: COWAN S CLASSICS with ROB COWAN Rob Cowan makes a welcome return to Classic FM this evening to begin his new Saturday evening show: Cowan s Classics. First introduced on Classic FM 25 years ago, the programme will include Rob s Sure Shot, where he champions a new recording which he s tipping for success. In Beyond the Hall of Fame, he will kick off by playing last year s Number 1 The Lark Ascending by Ralph Vaughan Williams and pairing it with a rarely-heard yet similar work for listeners to discover: a piece by Max Reger, that fits the bill perfectly. There will also be music from Rob s Artist of the Week: the legendary American soprano Jessye Norman. 9pm to 10pm: THE SOUND OF MUSIC with HOWARD GOODALL joined by ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER The award-winning composer, broadcaster and former Classic FM Composer in Residence, Howard Goodall, is in conversation with Britain s most successful musical theatre composer, Andrew Lloyd Webber, for a brand new six-part Saturday night series, celebrating the history of musical theatre: The Sound of Music. Tonight s programme centres on Andrew s musical influences and memories from his childhood, such as the first LP he recounts his father, the composer and organist William Lloyd Webber, playing to him and his younger brother, Julian. Andrew and Howard discuss the impact of growing up in a musical household, and the importance of music education in nurturing a lifelong passion for music and musicals, as Andrew explains why he was drawn to the theatre from a young age. Featuring music by Tchaikovsky and Prokofiev, along with compositions by Andrew and William Lloyd Webber, and cello recordings by Julian, The Sound of Music promises an evening of beautiful melodies and insightful conversation between two of the most successful composers working today. 2

3 SUNDAY 7 JANUARY 3pm to 5pm: CHARLOTTE HAWKINS Charlotte Hawkins presents her very first show on Classic FM, as she joins the Classic FM family today. Known to millions on Good Morning Britain, Charlotte will be on-air every Sunday afternoon. This afternoon she ll be offering a selection of Classic FM favourites and new discoveries, with a particular focus on young artists. Her first Star of the Future is the 18-year old cellist who has already begun to take the classical world by storm: Sheku Kanneh-Mason. 7pm to 9pm: DAVID MELLOR David Mellor takes the opportunity to explore a brand-new 100 CD box set compiled by Decca, to mark both the 20 th anniversary of the passing of Sir Georg Solti and the 125 th anniversary of the founding of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He ll be paying tribute to the great conductor s recorded legacy with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra through monumental performances of Beethoven and Mahler, and an epic recording of Haydn s masterpiece, The Creation. 9pm to 10pm: EVERYTHING YOU EVER WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT CLASSICAL MUSIC with CATHERINE BOTT What are your New Year s Resolutions? Are any of them musical for example, are you looking to attend more live classical concerts, or to devote more time exploring the works of a particular composer? Catherine Bott has been asking listeners to submit their musical endeavours for 2018 and tonight, she selects these, as well as offering up a few of her own, including going to see more ballets and learning more about the composer Mario Castelnuovo- Tedesco. Join her for a show that aims to inspire you on a path of musical discovery over the next twelve months! 3

4 MONDAY 8 JANUARY MONTH VAUGHAN WILLIAMS It s Great Composers Month on Classic FM and tonight, Jane Jones champions one of the most successful British composers of the 20 th century: Ralph Vaughan Williams. A composer who could master moods from stormy and impassioned to tranquil and mysterious, Jane features a selection of his works which have won the hearts of millions across the last century. Some of the UK s greatest orchestras, including the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Philharmonia, and City of Birmingham Symphony, play Vaughan Williams greatest pieces including the Fantasia on a theme by Thomas Tallis and the Five Variants of Dives and Lazarus. The outstanding Welsh bass-baritone Bryn Terfel sings the exquisite Silent Noon; there s a chance to hear some of the composer s successful film music; and a reminder of the strong value the great man placed in the church and its role in everyday life. 6 TUESDAY 9 JANUARY MONTH CHOPIN The Polish virtuoso and composer Frederic Chopin is next in the spotlight for Great Composers Month on Classic FM. We ll hear why he s the undisputed king of the piano through recordings of his greatest admirers, including Vladimir Ashkenazy and Jean Yves-Thibaudet, the soloist in his Piano Concerto No.1. Plus there s Joshua Bell s take on one of the composer s nocturnes, and the iconic duo of Jacqueline du Pre and Daniel Barenboim as they pair together to perform Chopin s Cello Sonata. 7 WEDNESDAY 10 JANUARY MONTH HAYDN Tonight, Classic FM celebrates the composer who dominated the Classical period with his extraordinarily popular music: Joseph Haydn. In a selection of fresh and iconic recordings, Jane Jones demonstrates how this great composer could turn his hand to masterfully write for both orchestra and solo instrument. Alexandre Tharaud plays a joyful rendition of Haydn s Keyboard Concerto in D, accompanied by Les Violons du Roy, and Leonard Bernstein directs a talented line-up of soloists in the composer s Sinfonia Concertante. A masterful symphony writer, our concert opens with his Symphony No.101 ( Clock ), followed by the joyful Cello Concerto No.1 performed by cellist Steven Isserlis. 8 THURSDAY 11 JANUARY MONTH GRIEG It s the turn of Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg to take centre stage this Great Composers Month on Classic FM, and Catherine Bott has an evening of his greatest works lined up to enjoy, presented in their entirety. From the powerful writing of the Norwegian Dances, performed by the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra under Neeme Jarvi, to the hauntingly delicate choral treatment of the Ave Maris Stella, it s clear to hear why Grieg is regarded as one of the leading composers of the Romantic era. The programme features one of the greatest concertos for piano ever written, featuring Lars Vogt and Classic FM s Orchestra in the Midlands, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra under Sir Simon Rattle, and Grieg s distinctive Peer Gynt Suite No.1 performed by Leonard Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. 9 FRIDAY 12 JANUARY MONTH BRUCH Catherine Bott presents two hours of music by the German composer Max Bruch in a celebration of his finest works, this Great Composers Month. Nicola Benedetti kicks off proceedings with a piece that s become a staple in any violinist s repertoire: Bruch s Violin Concerto No.1. Both soloist and orchestra show remarkable musicianship in this recording from There s also Bruch s Symphony No.1 performed by the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra under Kurt Masur, and the composer s stunning Kol Nidrei performed beautifully by the cellist Mischa Maisky.
