We have scheduled some fabulous artists to perform for you. Our season opener, Music Among Friends, takes place September 18th. Hear Nora Bumanis on harp with flutist Petar Dundjerski, violinist Dianne New and violist Clayton Leung in some rarely-heard gems of the ensemble literature. Our exciting Emerging Artist this year is Paris-based pianist Sarah Hoyt who will perform October 2nd. We are pleased to partner with The Czech and Slovak Society of Arts and Sciences of Alberta welcoming the brilliant young Czech pianist, Martin Karlíček to our stage October 23rd. On November 13th, we present Music Among Friends: In Remembrance, with pianist Sarah Ho, violinist Laura Veeze, clarinetist Julianne Scott and cellist Raphael Hoekman playing one of the masterpieces of the 20th century, Olivier Messiaen s Quartet for the End of Time. I am delighted to announce that we have secured an ERS Extra Special for you! On Saturday, January 14th, we present the world-renowned St. Lawrence String Quartet. Described by Musical America as the top quartet of the post-emerson generation, this is a concert not to be missed! (Note: This concert is not included in the season ticket.) The first annual Tanya Prochazka Tribute Recital is scheduled for February 26th. We have invited cellist and former Prochazka protégé Caroline Stinson to play this very special concert. On March 19th, we welcome Juno award winning lyric tenor, John Tessier and pianist Shannon Hiebert. The season closes April 30th with one of the most exciting new ensembles on the Canadian music scene today, the XIA Quartet. This is going to be a wonderful season of music. Please join us! St. Lawrence String Quartet Geoff Nuttall, Owen Dalby, violins; Lesley Robertson, viola; Christopher Costanza, cello A sound that has just about everything one wants from a quartet, most notably precision, warmth and an electricity that conveys the excitement of playing The New York Times Established in 1989, the St. Lawrence String Quartet earned international recognition within a few years, winning both the Banff String Quartet Competition and the Young Concert Artists audition in The group has since developed an undisputed reputation as a truly world class chamber ensemble. The St. Lawrence continues to build its reputation for imaginative and spontaneous music-making through their commitment to the great established quartet literature, and by championing new works by such composers as John Adams and Osvaldo Golijov. In recent seasons, SLSQ has been highlighting the music of Franz Josef Haydn. The St. Lawrence String Quartet performs internationally. Last season saw them perform in the UK, Germany, Romania and Switzerland as well as extensive touring in Canada and the USA (including Carnegie Hall). Lesley Robertson and Geoff Nuttall are founding members of the group, and hail from Edmonton, Alberta and London, Ontario, respectively. 4 Main Series MusicAmong 1 F riends Nora Bumanis, harp Petar Dundjerski, flute Clayton Leung, viola Dianne New, violin Sunday, September 18, 2016, 7:30 pm Muttart Hall, Alberta College Conservatory of Music MacDonald Drive, Edmonton AB $35 (adult)/ $25 (senior)/$10 (student) Nora Bumanis has been Principal Harpist of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra since In addition to her busy orchestral schedule, Ms. Bumanis is in much demand as a soloist, recording artist and teacher. She teaches at the University of Alberta and the Alberta College Conservatory. She is President of the Edmonton Recital Society. Born in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, Petar Dundjerski has lived in Canada since He received his Master s degree in Orchestral Conducting from the University of Toronto and did further studies in Aspen, Colorado and the College-Conservatory of Music, University of Cincinnati. Since settling in Edmonton, Petar has performed frequently with the ESO. Violist Clayton Leung s performances have taken him from coast to coast in Canada and into the USA. Born and raised in Vancouver, he graduated from the University of Victoria and did further studies at the Cleveland Institute of Music. He joined the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra in Dianne New is Principal Second Violin of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra. Born and raised in Edmonton, Dianne began her study of violin at age three. She joined the ESO at age 18 and has since devoted her artistic life to the Edmonton musical community. Main Series 2 Sunday, October 23, 2016 at 7:30 pm Muttart Hall, Alberta College Conservatory of Music MacDonald Drive, Edmonton AB $35 (adult)/ $25 (senior)/ $10 (student) Martin Karlíček, piano Martin Karlíček s piano playing has been described as brilliantly controlled, wonderfully colourful and always imaginative. Martin Karlíček performs regularly in the Czech Republic, Germany, Japan, Canada and in the U.S.A where he recently appeared at Carnegie Hall. Aside from establishing a reputation as a dynamic promoter of Czech music, Mr. Karlíček s solo and chamber music repertoire is wide ranging, including contemporary music. Recent projects include a CD of the complete piano works of the young Canadian composer Andrew Yin Svoboda ( ), as well as the première of a new Piano Concerto Déviations by Félix Frédéric Baril. Martin Karlíček has been a consistent prizewinner in competitions including the Smetana International Piano Competition, the South Bohemian International Piano Competition and the IBLA Grand Prize International. A graduate of the Academy of Music in Prague, he also studied at the Utrecht Academy of the Arts in Holland and at McGill University in Montreal where he received his Doctorate in Music and where he now teaches. Invitations have taken her to Carnegie s Weill and Zankel Halls, Lincoln Center s Alice Tully Hall, the Smithsonian in Washington DC, the Cité de la Musique in Paris. Recent performances have included recitals in New York and Brussels and appearances at the Lucerne Festival where she performed Elliott Carter s Triple Duo with Pierre Boulez conducting. An active chamber musician, Ms. Stinson is a member of the Lark Quartet in New York, which will celebrate 30 years of music making this season. A champion of contemporary music, Caroline has commissioned numerous works for solo cello as well as new chamber works through her work with the Lark Quartet and with Open End (a new music and improvisation group she founded with her husband, composer Andrew Waggoner). She has worked closely with composers Pierre Boulez, T. Patrick Carrabré, John Corigliano, Christos Hatzis, Kelly-Marie Murphy and Joan Tower. In 2011, at the composer s recommendation, she performed Esa-Pekka Salonen s YTA III for solo cello at Scandinavia House in New York. *This recital is sponsored by Connie and Gabe Shelley. John Tessier, tenor Shannon Hiebert, piano Juno Award winning John Tessier has garnered international attention and praise for the beauty and honesty of his voice, for a refined style and artistic versatility, and for his handsome, youthful presence in the lyric tenor repertoire. He has worked with many of the most notable musicians of our day, including Placido Domingo, Lorin Maazel, Charles Dutoit, Valery Gergiev; with Thomas Hampson, Kiri Te Kanawa, and Deborah Voigt. Appearances of the recent past include performances at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, The Sydney Opera House, the Wiener Staatsoper, Carnegie Hall, the New York Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra, and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. His discography includes recordings on the Naxos, Telarc, BIS and Dorian labels. Equally comfortable in the genres of opera, oratorio and recital, Mr. Tessier is also in high demand for coaching, master classes and private consultations. Pianist Shannon Hiebert focused her studies on collaborative piano at The Banff Centre for the Arts with Martin Isepp followed by graduate studies in accompanying and chamber music at the University of Michigan with renowned accompanist and vocal coach, Martin Katz. Much in demand as a collaborative artist, she has worked with such celebrated singers as Tracy Dahl and Measha Brueggergosman.
6 Main Series 5 XIA Quartet Sunday, April 30, 2017 at 2 pm (*Note special time) Avenue, Edmonton AB $35 (adult)/ $25 (senior)/ $10 (student) Hailed as an important new ensemble, the XIA Quartet was formed in 2014 when Edmonton Symphony Orchestra Concertmaster, Robert Uchida joined with three musicians from the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. The XIA Quartet has performed extensively in Ontario and Alberta. Robert Uchida has been heard throughout North America and Europe to great critical acclaim. Robert was Artistic Director of the Acadia Summer Strings Festival from and has held teaching positions at Acadia University, the Manhattan School of Music and the National Arts Centre of Canada s Young Artist Program. Violinist Shane Kim joined the Toronto Symphony Orchestra in Prior positions include seven seasons with the Minnesota Orchestra. Mr. Kim graduated from the University of Toronto followed by studies at Yale with Peter Oundjian and the Tokyo String Quartet. Violist Theresa Rudolph has been a member of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra since Ms. Rudolph has performed throughout North America and has been featured several times on CBC Radio, collaborating with artists such as Miriam Fried, Steven Isserlis, Scott St. John and Jamie Parker. Joseph Johnson is known widely as a soloist, chamber musician and educator. Principal Cellist of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra since 2009, Mr. Johnson previously held the same position in Milwaukee. EmergingArtist Series Sunday, October 2, 2016 at 2 pm Avenue, Edmonton AB Admission by donation Sarah Hoyt, piano Pianist Sarah Hoyt has performed across Europe and Canada as a solo and collaborative pianist. Originally from Edmonton, Sarah graduated with degrees in piano performance from the École Normale de Musique de Paris Alfred Cortot and the Université de Montréal. Her teachers have included Jeanine Bonjean (Alfred Cortot s assistant), Michael Wladkowski, Devy Erlih and Marc Durand. She has participated in residencies at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris, The Banff Centre and spent many summers at the Banff International Keyboard Festival. Sarah is passionate about both French and Canadian music and is committed to presenting Canadian composers to European audiences. Her eclectic background in the arts has led to numerous interdisciplinary projects that combine music, philosophy and art. In September 2015, she was chosen to perform Canadian artist Patrick Bernatchez s Piano Orbital as part of the annual Museum Night in the Grote Kerk in The Hague. Sarah s recording of this piece was included in exhibitions at the Musée d art contemporain de Montréal and Toronto s The Power Plant this past year. Her own conceptual video piece, Piano Four Hands has also been shown in galleries in Paris including the Gallerie Christiane Peugeot. *This recital is sponsored by The Edmonton Book Store.

Sunday, November 13, 2016 at 7:30 pm Avenue, Edmonton AB Admission by donation Laura Veeze has reached audiences on three continents as a soloist, recitalist and chamber musician. She has held principal second violin positions with the Radio Chamber Philharmonic in the Netherlands and with Symphony Nova Scotia in Canada. Currently, she is a member of the first violin section of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra. A native of Calgary, Julianne Scott is Principal Clarinet of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra. Ms. Scott has degrees from the University of Toronto and the University of Southern California. She has spent numerous summers participating in major festivals including the Aspen Festival and the Spoleto Festival. Rafael Hoekman was recently named Principal Cello of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra. He has performed as soloist with the Quebec Symphony, the Newfoundland Symphony and the Calgary Philharmonic. A founding member of the Tokai String Quartet, Rafael Hoekman was a prizewinner at the 2007 Banff International String Quartet Competition. Pianist Sarah Ho performs frequently in this country, the USA and Europe as a soloist and ensemble player. Frequently heard on CBC, Sarah has performed with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, the Kitchener-Waterloo Chamber Orchestra and the National Arts Centre Orchestra.
