This 11-piece ensemble plays a wide variety of what is commonly called "Americana." For 13 years, the group has acted as the house Rock and Roll band for The Folk Project's annual Valentine's Day show. The band consists of Mark Schaffer, Jeff Rantzer, Andy Koenig, Darrell Courtley, Kris Lamb, Frank Sole, Dave Kleiner, Liz Pagan, Dave Sherman, Bob Dowling, and Greg Sundel. The band is excited to make its headline debut for The Folk Project at the home of The Minstrel Acoustic Concert Series. The concert program will feature many original compositions that will make this show truly unique. Tickets on sale for just $15 at concerts.folkproject.org or at the door. Eric Schwartz in Special Concert Sat., Sep. 23, 7:30pm Morristown Unitarian Fellowship The Folk Project will be departing from its usual fare of entertainment with this upcoming Special Concert featuring Eric Schwartz. Eric is a satirical songwriter and powerful performer, featuring great vocal and instrumental chops, both on guitar and piano. He is a brilliant wordsmith, making great use of puns, similes, unlikely rhymes, and double entendre, with hilarious results. His experience in professional comedy clubs makes him wonderfully spontaneous and improvisational, resulting in a show that is never the same twice. Those of you who enjoy the Daily Show s Jon Stewart will find yourselves instant Eric Schwartz Fans And, like Jon Stewart, Eric s language will turn blue from time to time. And his subject matter includes sexual references and left-leaning political material. So we scheduled this concert on a Saturday to make sure that no one expecting our usual apolitical and family-friendly fare at the Minstrel will be blindsided by this more adult-oriented show. Also, note that this will be Eric s (continued on page 7) QUICK GUIDE TO THE INSIDE September Evening o' Music... 2 Jersey City's First Major Folk Festival... 2 Brooklyn Americana Music Festival... 2 Members Gigs (& Friends)... 7 Board Meeting: The Summary...10 Good o the Order...11 MUF Fundraiser Auction...13 NOTE: web links in the enewsletter are now clickable

But she is no one-hit wonder. Her canon is chock full of songs of equal quality, which she delivers with passion, wit, and humor, interspersed with fascinating anecdotes about the songs and their inspiration. Her musical chops, both vocal and piano, are more than worthy of the songs themselves. Hailing from upstate South Carolina, Jacob Johnson specializes in a style of guitar playing he calls neoacoustic folk/funk, characterized by virtuoso chops played at blinding speed enhanced by electronic looping. His off-the-cuff sense of humor and tongue-in-cheek sensibility provide an endearing counterbalance to his technical brilliance. Fri., Sep. 8: Open Stage (call 973/ or visit for a performance slot) Fri., Sep. 15: The Loving Hearts Club Boogie Band (tickets $15 advance & door this show only) The Loving Hearts Club Boogie Band is excited to make its debut concert performance. The ten-piece band has performed for the Folk Project s Valentine s show for the last 13 years, backing up a multitude of singers. Tickets at concerts.folkproject.org. or at the door. Fri., Sep. 22: Pete s Posse with Pete McDonough Pete Sutherland is a fiddler, guitarist, pianist, songwriter, bandleader, and all-around revered elder of the New England folk community. He has gathered round him two brilliant young multi-instrumentalists to form Pete s Posse: twin fiddles in tight, wild harmony over high-powered guitar and pounding footwork with mandolin, banjo, jawharp and keyboards combined with their voices. Pete McDonough is a fingerstyle guitarist who has been performing, studying, and writing about acoustic blues for more than 40 years. His performances present a journey through Piedmont, Delta, and other acoustic blues styles associated with such greats as Rev. Gary Davis, Bo Carter, Mississippi John Hurt, and others. Sat., Sep. 23: A Folk Project Special Concert Eric Schwartz (special Saturday concert) Tickets $20, available in advance at concerts.folkproject.org or at the door Who is Eric Schwartz? Think Jon Stewart with a guitar. His humor is wickedly biting, and to the point. On top of this, he is also a superb songwriter and instrumentalist, not only on guitar, but piano as well. Well known as the bad boy of the Folk World, Schwartz is possibly the only artist in the history of the world to get raves from both Gloria Steinem and Hustler Magazine. PLEASE NOTE: This concert is rated R for language and sexual content Fri., Sep. 29: Vance Gilbert with Liz Queler & Seth Farber Those who experienced Vance Gilbert s bravura performance at the Folk Project Spring Getaway will be thrilled to know he ll be back at the Minstrel. And those who missed it will get a chance to see why. Vance brings an intricate guitar style, a brilliant way with words, and a sophisticated vocal technique to the stage. His personal charisma and wicked wit sing pure entertainer at the top of those powerful lungs. Vance is a great showman, an amazing singer, and a real swell guy. Partners in marriage and music, Liz Queler & Seth Farber are both three-time Grammy nominees. With individual credits including appearances at Newport Folk Festival and Carnegie Hall (Liz), and the conducting podium of numerous Broadway shows (Seth), their family band presents a truly unique sound and soul. Heavy on harmonies, their music is infused with a rock sensibility, 14 More on dancing at the Country Dance and Song Society UPCOMING: 10/6 Closed for the Folk Project Fall Getaway; 10/13 Rosie & the Riveters with Betsy Rose and the Chicago Fire; 10/20 Cindy Mangsen & Steve Gillette with Paul Kaplan; 10/27 Folk Project Halloween Show; 11/3 Split Bill Terry Kitchen & Mara Levine and Celestial Harmonies; 11/10 Open Stage; 11/17 Joe Jencks with Katherine Rondeau & the Show; 11/24 The Lords of Liechtenstein with Bill Buttner To volunteer, volunteers@folkproject.org 3

Each fall, MUF conducts an auction event its largest fundraiser of the year and the FP tries to help make that event a success. We are asking you, as an FP member, to please assist in this year's efforts by offering MUF an auction donation of some sort, preferably a service you are willing to perform. Here's how the auction works: People donate all sorts of goods and service offerings, which are then put on display and sold to the highest bidders. The auction process has both a live segment (items offered by an auctioneer for vocalized bids) and a silent segment (items displayed with sign-sheets for written bids accumulated over several days). The whole process will open with a gala evening costume party on November 4, during which attendees can examine the offerings, place initial silent bids, and socialize. The party culminates in a great sit-down dinner accompanied by live music, the live auction segment, and prize awards for best costumes. (Last year the music was a donated performance by FP's Circle 'Round the Sun Jay Wilensky, Marie Trontell, & friends who did a smashing job, making MUF very happy and the FP very proud.) You can contribute this year to the MUF November auction in any of several ways: 1) donate a good or service item for MUF to sell; 2) bid on something donated by others for sale; 3) make a simple cash donation. More details about times, methods, etc., will be forthcoming in the October newsletter, but please start now to think creatively and plan for your donation, as the deadline for actually submitting goods or final service proposals will be in early October, closer than it now feels. Examples of desirable auction goods: musical instruments you no longer use, artwork, jewelry, antiques, collectibles, ticket(s) to an event, homebaked bread. For this 2017 auction, however, MUF particularly wants to emphasize donated service items which build community while raising money: Our members and friends offer events and services for and with each other. Examples: guitar lesson(s) by a master player or singing lesson(s) by a pro; lessons in anything in which you have technical skill or expertise, e.g., computer use, knitting, bridge, cooking; a ride on your boat; a home-cooked special meal; a weekend in your vacation home; a dinner or games party in your home; an organized hike or excursion; redecorating a room; professional services of any sort, e.g., accounting, plumbing, sewing; labor of any sort, e.g., gardening or mowing, cleaning, painting, carwash, transportation, handyman repair. Your service offering can, and should, specify your parameters and limits in number of hours, task details, location, dates or times available, etc. Watch for the October newsletter. Meanwhile, please formulate a generous plan for sharing your time and accomplishments. Urgent questions: contact Sandy Jackson at 973/ Use Your Refrigerator Magnets New readers of the FP newsletter may not realize that its layout is designed to be used with refrigerator magnets. How's that, you say? Magnets? Yes. Open up your paper copy of the newsletter to its exact middle, where the staples are, and you will be looking at the Calendar section, left page and right. Next, put it up on your refrigerator opened that way using your magnets so you can see the Calendar every day. You will now be shown every day all the important folk activities for the month ahead, making planning your folk activities much easier. If you get the electronic version of the newsletter you can do something similar by going to the Calendar spread and printing it out to be posted on your refrigerator, or you can convert it to your computer screensaver. Either way, you are covered when it comes to seeing what is happening in the folk world for the month ahead. 13

6 Open Stage Passes the Baton Hello to all, The baton has been passed. I'm very excited to announce that I have gratefully assumed the stewardship of the Minstrel Open Stage. For over four decades, the Minstrel Open Stage has offered acoustic musicians the opportunity to perform in front of supportive and enthusiastic audiences. Sometimes Minstrel Concert Series opening acts are selected from our Open Stage performers. My vision for the Open Stage is to expand our outreach activities to broaden our performer demographic and diversify our appeal across all age groups. So I invite you to come back to the Open Stage and please, bring the "young'uns." See you soon at the Minstrel! Mitch Radler Hammered Dulcimer House Concert Sun., Oct. 15, 7pm New Providence, NJ Here is your chance to see National Hammered Dulcimer Champion Ted Yoder in an intimate house concert setting on Sunday, October 7pm in New Providence, NJ. Mr. Yoder has been wowing audiences with his technical skills. And he will whisk us away on a spiritually uplifting journey across genres with his symphonic solo musical touch. This event is an official house concert of Folk Alliance International. Tickets are $15 and seating is limited. You can order your tickets online at FolkProject.org. Give me a call if you need more info. 908/ Pam, Special Concerts Chair Bill Bragg's Skiffle Lecture Many may have recently heard Bill Bragg's interview on NPR's Fresh Air, but his talk at the Library of Congress was mesmerizing. I was torn between the Minstrel lineup and the lecture in DC, opting for the Minstrel, and wow! So glad to have seen the Library of Congress lecture up online so quickly. I thought it worth sharing via the newsletter, good all the way to the end of the Q&A session. Billy Bragg, musician, activist, Woody Guthrie tunesmith, and author of Roots, Radicals and Rockers: How Skiffle Changed the World, gave a great lecture at the Library of Congress about skiffle, a catchy name for a do-it-yourself music craze that swept Britain in the 1950s, influenced by American jazz, blues, folk, and roots music. Skiffle is the main reason the guitar came to the forefront of music in the UK, and in this sense led directly to both the UK folk scene and British rock and roll, including the British Invasion of the US charts in the 1960s. The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, The Faces, The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Kinks, and David Bowie not to mention Martin Carthy, John Renbourn, and the Watersons all got their start playing skiffle. Watch the lecture at Mihal Gross Unclassified Ad I'm a member of the Fellowship of Quakers in the Arts South Jersey Chapter, and we have the "remains" of an upright piano the soundboard with strings to give away to anyone interested in having it for recycling into other instruments, etc. Salem Friends Meeting had an old upright circa 1915 Harrington that we were unfortunately unable to give away. So it got turned into an art project, with multiple artists creating a variety of works...now the soundboard and strings are left do you know of anyone who would be interested in having it? Please contact me at scissordoodles@gmail.com. 6 Christine Cameron (Evelyn Maurer's sister), OLD BUSINESS Legal Housekeeping: President Steve reported that a draft report on the Project s legal compliance will be available shortly, and that the review of our insurance coverage is progressing. NEW BUSINESS Christine Hands Off To Mitch: Event Hosting Chair and Open Stage host Christine DeLeon advised that because of her new employment and the increasing demands of her performing career, she is stepping down from those positions. To heartfelt applause, President Steve stated that Christine has done an amazing job, and Mark S. noted how she has put her personal stamp on Open Stage. To cheers all around, Christine passed the Open Stage torch to Project stalwart Mitch Radler. ONWARD! The meeting was adjourned at 9:40pm. The next meeting will be held on September 5, 2017, at the home of Mark and Robin Schaffer. All members are welcome; secretary@folkproject.org for directions and details. Good o the Order A place to share news with your Folk Project Community about memorable events and challenges. Please send items to Joanne Cronin, joannelcronin@optonline.net Christine Del Vecchio just got back from the Summer Songs songwriting retreat in Stony Point, NY. She had a blast: wrote three songs, had a great time, can t wait till next year. Lindsey Meyer saw Senator Al Franken on his book tour. She got a picture taken with Al! The Clinton Book Shop sponsored the event and gets a lot of interesting authors in. Like them on Facebook and they ll post events on their page, like John Waters and David Sedaris. Al talked about his book, what s going on in DC, and his shift from writing for Saturday Night Live to Washington, where there is very little humor. Peter Glenn just got back from a week in Mount Bethel, PA. A Saturday night concert was given by the group Seula, a Christian music group, and it was very enjoyable. The rest of the week was welcome R & R. Lois DeRitter made a quick trip up to visit her daughter in Massachusetts. Lauralyn and her husband just got a golden retriever puppy-cream colored, sweet, and adorable. She had lots of fun playing with the puppy and visiting her family. John Mahon went down to Orlando with his daughter, son-in-law, and grandkids. When he got back, he did sound for Bob Safranek s Americana group, and then a doubleheader with his bluegrass band: Friday night a downtown outdoor concert in Haddonfield, and Saturday morning at the Collingswood farmers market. Bob McNally finished his run of eight art fairs in three months, which kept him very busy. He and Sandy are now going sailing for a few days in Long Island Sound. Elizabeth Lachowicz celebrated another birthday. Her son Thomas has turned out to be a thoughtful gift-giver. This year s gift to Mom was a Roku. Elizabeth is thrilled. It s something she would not have thought of for herself. Mark Schaffer went to guitar camp with Ed Ludlow. At Fiddle Camp he learned a lot, but at Guitar Camp, after Jay Ungar, he s the best fiddler. Robin Schaffer was very glad to be able to reschedule a vacation to the Outer Banks, which suffered a power failure due to a severed power line to the islands, They were able to get a refund and switch the venue to a place in Cape May big enough to hold all the kids and grandkids. "It s all good." Tom Taylor considers the existence of the Folk Project nothing short of a small miracle, and we are to be congratulated. Steve Humphreys just got back from a week in Colorado. They hiked in a place near Aspen called Maroon Bells, and also visited a 150-year-old hotel in Cremeley, up in the mountains. The hotel has a room dedicated to John Denver, with lots of memorabilia, and the proprietor performs as John Denver for his guests. Steve s party got a little concert while they were there. George Otto closed on his mother s house last Friday, after a year and a half of downsizing, finding places for things, and auctioning things off. This brings the frequent trips to Virginia to an end, and George hopes to be able to devote more time to Folk Project activities. Jay Wilensky thanks all the Projectiles who came out to support Reeds, Rhythm and All That Brass in Rockaway. The band is on the street in Madison on September 8, and he hopes people will come down and support them again. 11

7 10 Folk Project Annual Board Meeting August 1, 2017 Board Meeting: The Summary The August 1, 2017, meeting was called to order at 8pm in President Steve Humphreys Northern White House. Present: Steve Humphreys, Jay Wilensky, Mike Agranoff, Lois DeRitter, Olga Alvarez, Ken Brody, Allan Kugel, Elizabeth Lachowicz, Evelyn McNally (officers and trustees); Bob McNally, Mark Schaffer, Peter Glenn, Lindsey Meyer, Pat Brangs, Christine DeLeon, George Otto, Lori Falco, Paul Fisher, Joanne Cronin, John Mahon, (committee chairs). Absent: Kathi Caccavale, Sandie Reilly, Pam Robinson, Leigh Walker. Guests: Robin Schaffer, Tom Taylor, Mitch Radler. MOTIONS Consideration of the minutes of the June 2017 Board meeting was deferred until the September meeting. ADMINISTRATIVE REPORTS President: Steve requested volunteers to host Board meetings, and several Board members stepped up to the plate. Treasurer: Emerald Eyeshade Chris Riemer deferred his report, but noted that the Project is having a very good year financially. COMMITTEE REPORTS Community Services: Chair Pat Brangs reported the sad need to send a condolence card to Barb Moo upon the loss of two of her sisters. Pat noted that the Project has supplied musicians for the upcoming Mount Tabor house tour. Secretary Jay praised Pat for her enthusiastic promotion of the Project. Getaway: Chair Mark Schaffer noted that Fall Getaway is already 2/3 full and that Getaway Day was halffull after only two selling days. Mark has kept the price low and expects Getaway Day to cost less than $400. Mark s goal is to attract new Getaway-goers by offering an introduction to the G. experience, and eight newbies so far have signed up. Mark added that it has been cool to deal with G.D. performers Terre Roach and Cliff Eberhardt. President Steve noted generally that venue chairs have latitude for experiments such as G.D. Minstrel Booking: Chair Mike Agranoff reported a stellar month for Minstrel, concerning both finances and attendance. Mike noted that people were turned away from the Tom Chapin concert, but that 15, at no charge, saw the show on Concert Window and were seated for the second half. The show was quite profitable for both the performer and Minstrel. Also, opener Butch Ross received a standing ovation, and 55 audience members gave checkmarks indicating that they would return to see Butch as the feature. Mike applauded the staff that worked this overflow night. Additional favorable developments noted by Mike: The audience for Concert Window is building. MUF has granted us the use of a computer, which enabled the showing of the Chapin show to the overflow crowd. And, MUF is considering both re-installing its sound panels, which would reduce echo, and allocating additional storage space. New bookings include Betsy Rose, to open for Rosie and the Riveters on October 13; Bill Staines (!!!), for Chorus Song Night on December 1; and Jim Kweskin on May 18, Swingin Tern: Chair Leigh Walker reported a good month. Attendance is improving, and in July, the losses from individual dances in July were minimal and an anonymous $500 donation to Tern and the Project was made. Leigh advised that both large contributions and a steady stream of small donations at dances have produced an overall gain, and he is confident in the future. Allan Kugel noted that the Board fully supports Tern and wants to ensure that the Committee is not overly concerned with fundraising. Archives: Chair Lindsey Meyer reported that in September, she will survey Project members concerning historical items that they might have and be willing to donate. Horses Sing None Of It: Ken Brody reported that the taping studio will be closed until September and that the studio operates on a shoestring. President Steve will follow up on a lead for equipment that will enable off-site taping. Regardless, HSNOI taped a show with Dave Vargo in July and has scheduled Loretta Hagen and Kim Boyko for Sept. 21, and Jack Petruzzelli w/ Cameron Greider on October 12.
