1 NORTH HILLS HANDBELL ASSOCIATION THIRTY-FIFTH ANNUAL FESTIVAL St. Paul s United Methodist Church 1965 Ferguson Road, Allison Park, PA Friday, Saturday, April 27, 2013 Dear Fellow Handbell Directors, We hope you and your ringers are planning to participate in the North Hills Handbell Festival, Saturday, April 27, This is an opportunity to challenge your ringers, meet other directors, and look through new music provided by Musik Innovations. It will be a great boost to your bell choir program and a chance for you to interact with other area bell choir directors. Enclosed is a complete registration form. These forms are also available on the Area II web site ( and scroll down to the date. Return the registration form with your $80.00 registration fee to the address at the bottom of the form. Remember that the registration fee covers ASCAP fees for each choir. The repertoire has been chosen so that most of the music will be usable in your church program throughout the year. Most of the pieces have been used in previous festivals. This will help cut down costs for those of you who have participated in years past. You are not required to play all of the massed music. If your choir has less experience, choose the TINS music and whatever massed music you can play. If your choir is more advanced, the COPPER music is a little harder. Choirs are expected to play both pieces in the division(s) they choose plus as much of the massed music as they can manage. SOMETHING NEW!!!! We have two new things added to our festival this year. The women of St. Paul s are willing to prepare lunch for us on Saturday. This will give us a wonderful opportunity for participants to eat together, visit, and ask questions. There is a separate registration form for the luncheon. The luncheon must be prepaid and the registration MUST be returned by the deadline indicated on the form. The ladies preparing the lunch need to buy food and must know how many will be attending. You can choose to bring your own lunch, as in the past, but I urge the ringers to take advantage of this opportunity to get to know other ringers and make new friends and enjoy the fellowship. The directors will be having their annual meeting during the lunch hour and will able to pick up lunches first so they can eat while planning for future festivals. SECOND NEW THING As most of you know, our dear friend, long time treasurer and mentor to the North Hills Handbell Association, Peggy McNamee, lost her long battle with cancer in October. We are planning a MEMORIAL CONCERT for Peggy on Friday night, April 26 in St Paul s sanctuary. All proceeds from the concert will go to Trinity United Methodist Church where Peggy was the organist and directed the bell choir. The principal bell choir for the concert will be the Stowe Heritage Ringers from Stowe, Ohio. We are waiting to see if Peggy s former bell choir from Trinity will also be able to play. We are hoping that the sanctuary will be full so that we can give a significant contribution to the church in her memory. We want this to be a celebration of Peggy s life and her love of handbells. Please spread the word and plan to attend with your choir. The gym at St. Paul s is smaller than past venues. Choirs will be accepted strictly on a first come basis. Registration received after the floor is full will be placed on a waiting list and notified if someone cancels. Please include any special requests for set-up or placement i.e. not in first row; put choir in two rows, etc.
2 There are a number of motels in the North Hills area, most of them in the Cranberry area. If your choir is planning to stay overnight and you need a list of the motels, please ask and I will send you a list. We urge you to bring your own bell tables if at all possible. St. Paul s has a limited number of tables for our use and these will be assigned on a first come basis. If you want to bring and/or set up your bells Friday night, you can do so before or after the concert. Otherwise, Coppers will need to set up between 8:00 and 8:30 a.m. on Saturday. Please plan accordingly as we want to start rehearsal promptly at 8:30. The public concert will be at 5:15 Saturday afternoon. If you have questions you can reach me by . We look forward to seeing you at the festival. TENTATIVE SCHEDULE Saturday, April 27, 2013 Tentative Schedule 8:00 8:30 Coppers Set Up 12:00 1:00 Lunch/Directors meeting 8:30 to 9:45 Coppers rehearsal 1:00 2:15 - Massed 9:45 10:15 Tins Set Up 2:15 3:30 Tins Rehearsal 10:15 to 12:00 Massed 3:30 4:40 Concert Run Through 5:15 Public concert IMPORTANT From December until the middle of April I will be in Florida but can still be reached by . The audience will join us on the last verse. We have ample copies, I think, of the choral parts which we will loan to those who want to sing. If you happen to have copies and some of your ringers want to sing, please bring them with you. I would rather have too many than not enough.

8 MEMORIAL CONCERT FOR PEGGY MCNAMEE The North Hills Handbbell Association is presenting a MEMORIAL CONCERT for Peggy McNamee, long time treasurer of the Association and mentor to many bell ringers, on Friday night, April 26, 2013, in St Paul s United Methodist sanctuary as part of this years NHHA weekend festival. The principal bell choir for the concert will be the Stowe Heritage Ringers from Stowe, Ohio. Also playing will be Sue Garton, nationally known solo handbell ringer. The concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the sanctuary of St. Paul s United Methodist Church Ferguson Road, Allison Park, PA A donation of $10.00 per person will be accepted at the door with all proceeds going to Trinity United Methodist Church in McMurray where Peggy was the organist and director of the bell choir. Stow Heritage Ringers, Inc. 73 bells, 61 ChoirChimes, 28 hands and 14 accomplished musicians make up this dynamic ensemble, specializing in the artistry and teamwork of English Handbell ringing. Stow Heritage Ringers has been entertaining audiences since its inception in This advanced handbell ensemble draws musicians from the greater Northeast Ohio area and is dedicated to presenting programs that share the diversity of this unique instrument. SHR has been honored to present two world premieres. First was a work commissioned with Michael Glasgow entitled, Five, Six, Seven, Eight! This intellectual and jazzy piece pushes the envelope of handbell ringing, offering many challenges to the ringer and the listener alike and we hope to see this work published in the near future. We were also honored to present the premiere of King of Kings, Lord of Lords, arranged by Robert Ward. This number was dedicated to NHHA s very own, Marilyn Hines and it was our honor to perform this for her at a very special celebration. SHR regularly performs in Ohio and western Pennsylvania, sharing a variety of musical styles. Performance repertoire includes original compositions, arrangements and transcriptions from classical to contemporary music, both secular and sacred. More information about the ensemble and members can be found by visiting us on Facebook or at Sue Garton Sue Garton is a resident of Slippery Rock, PA and rings in the East Main Presbyterian Church bell choir and the Celebration Ringers, a community ensemble. She is a member of the Handbell Musicians of America. She has been a soloist and clinician at many local, area and national events, including the International Seminar in Orlando, Fl, Pinnacle in Nashville, TN and SEE, the Solo-Ensemble Extravaganza in Colorado Springs, CO. She also worked with a newly formed handbell choir in Kiev, Ukraine while presenting concerts in Kiev and Presov, Slovakia. Sue currently devotes most of her time to handbells, both as a clinician and solo artist. Sue is the author of two articles on solo handbell techniques and nine of her solo handbell arrangements have been published. Her repertoire includes a wide variety of sacred, secular and classical music and she delights in presenting the artistry of solo handbells.
